Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Polymorphism 1562 C > T (rs3918242) Associated with Protection against Placental Malaria

Phagocytosis of malaria pigment (hemozoin) induces increased activity of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, an endopeptidase involved in cytokine regulation. In this study, we examined whether a common functional MMP-9 promoter polymorphism (rs3918242) affects Plasmodium falciparum infection in pregnancy. Eighteen percent of Ghanaian primiparae carried the minor T allele. It was associated with reduced odds of placental hemozoin and of placental as well as peripheral blood parasitemia. The results indicate that a common MMP-9 polymorphism protects against placental malaria indicating that this endopeptidase is involved in susceptibility to P. falciparum.

Summary: In patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria, the nadir hemoglobin occurs 2 days after starting treatment. Factors associated with moderately severe anemia on day 7 in Africa and Asia include severe anemia at baseline, young age, high parasitemia, and delayed parasite clearance. In Asia, artemisinin-based treatments are associated with a greater risk of anemia during recovery compared to non-artemisinin-based treatments.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the susceptibility of adults with diabetes mellitus (DM) in malaria-endemic areas to Plasmodium infection. The results showed that fasting blood glucose (FBG) was causally affected by parasite density, and daily ambient temperature also affected parasite density. Longer observation periods and larger samples are needed to confirm these findings and determine the direction of causality.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the psychosocial wellbeing of students in Berlin, Germany. Anxiety symptoms and fear of infection increased, while social contacts and health-related quality of life decreased. Factors such as gender, age, school attendance, household income, and presence of adults with anxiety symptoms were associated with anxiety. Fear of infection and low HRQoL were also linked to anxiety.

Summary: Our manufacturer-independent prospective study assessed the clinical performance of participants with presumed SARS-CoV-2 infection at three study sites in two countries. We evaluated the accuracy overall and in predefined subgroups based on C-T values and symptom duration. The SureStatus diagnostic test showed high sensitivity, especially in the first few days after symptom onset and when C-T values were low. The system usability and ease-of-use assessment provided valuable insights for the widespread use of SureStatus in point-of-care settings. The high sensitivity demonstrated by the evaluated Ag-RDT during the early phase of infection supports its role in public health screening.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, children and adolescents worldwide have been disproportionately affected in their psychological health and wellbeing. A cohort study in Germany found that anxiety symptoms among school children decreased from June to August 2021, but increased again in September 2021. Factors such as gender, school type, household education and income level, and COVID-19 vaccination were significantly associated with reporting anxiety symptoms.
