Summary: Reactivation of human cytomegalovirus is a common complication after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Graft-versus-host disease increases the risk of HCMV disease. In a murine model, we found that mice with latent MCMV infection experienced reactivation and dissemination of the virus when GVHD occurred, leading to increased mortality. MCMV-specific antibodies were shown to modulate the reactivation and dissemination of MCMV, highlighting the potential of antibody treatments and strategies to enhance antibody development against HCMV.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and predictors of CMV reactivation in immunocompetent patients requiring mechanical ventilation. It found that BMI, Hb, and sepsis were independent risk factors for CMV reactivation, and could potentially predict CMV reactivation. Adverse prognoses such as longer duration of MV, higher hospitalization expenses, and increased mortality rate were associated with CMV reactivation.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of chemically induced enteritis on cytomegalovirus reactivation using a mouse model. The results showed that chemically induced enteritis had no effect on the reactivation of cytomegalovirus in intestinal tissues.

Summary: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) manipulates host cell signaling to establish and maintain latency, alter cellular environment, and reactivate from latency, with a specific focus on myeloid cells. Viral-mediated cell signaling is finely regulated and differs between infection phases and myeloid cell types, providing potential targets for therapeutic interventions.

Summary: Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) have evolved through private gene families to adapt to their specific mammalian hosts. The host immune response drives viral evolution and the acquisition of immune evasion proteins encoded by private gene families. The mouse model based on murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV) is a versatile tool for studying virus-host interplay. This review focuses on the immune evasion of CD8(+) T cells by mCMV proteins and their role during acute and latent infection.

Summary: Herpesviruses, including HCMV, which infects the majority of the population worldwide, establish lifelong latent infections and pose a risk for diseases, especially in immunocompromised individuals. We demonstrate that the cellular E3 ligase IDOL targets HCMV UL136p33 protein for degradation, which plays a key role in reactivation. This work provides important insights into the mechanisms of HCMV replication and latency.

Summary: We provide a state-of-the-art reannotation of the lytic gene expression of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV). Our analysis reveals hundreds of novel transcripts and open reading frames (ORFs), including highly expressed small ORFs and upstream ORFs that regulate the expression of downstream ORFs at the translational level.

Summary: The reactivation of viruses after stem cell transplantation is a clinical challenge. Monitoring strategies and expensive antiviral drugs are needed. T cells, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells play important roles in protecting against viral reactivation. Graft-versus-host disease and new antiviral drugs may affect immune functionality and relevance.

Summary: Human cytomegalovirus infection of the developing fetus can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, with limited understanding of the neuropathogenesis due to complexities including maternal immune responses and virus replication in the CNS. Animal models have been developed to study CMV neuropathogenesis despite species limitations, providing valuable insights into the human infection.
