Summary: Diminished immune response to COVID-19 vaccines is a concern for solid organ transplant recipients. A study investigated the immune responses of kidney transplant recipients after a third vaccine dose and breakthrough infection. The study found that the antibody titers and cellular immune responses were enhanced in recipients who experienced breakthrough infection.

A heterologous AZD1222 priming and BNT162b2 boosting regimen more efficiently elicits neutralizing antibodies, but not memory T cells, than the homologous BNT162b2 regimen

Yae Jee Baek, Woo-Joong Kim, Jae-Hoon Ko, Youn-Jung Lee, Jin Young Ahn, Jung Ho Kim, Ho Cheol Jang, Hye Won Jeong, Yong Chan Kim, Yoon Soo Park, Sung -Han Kim, Kyong Ran Peck, Eui-Cheol Shin, Jun Yong Choi

Summary: This study compared the immune responses elicited by different SARS-CoV-2 vaccination regimens and found that heterologous vaccination with AZD1222 / BNT162b2 and prior infection/vaccination with SARS-CoV-2 resulted in higher levels of neutralizing antibodies. Homologous vaccination with BNT162b2 / BNT162b2 was more efficient in generating spike-specific CD4' T-cell responses. Prior infection/vaccination resulted in more efficient immunity against the Delta variant compared to other homologous or heterologous vaccination regimens.

Attitudinal analysis of vaccination effects to lead endemic phases

Donggyun Ku, Gahyun Kim, Kyong Ran Peck, In Kwon Park, Rakwoo Chang, Donghan Kim, Seungjae Lee

Summary: Repeated vaccinations are necessary to achieve endemic phases, but individuals may hesitate to get vaccinated due to potential side effects. However, repeated vaccinations can lead to avoidance, impeding the establishment of endemic phases. Game theory and simulations show that a vaccination rate greater than 89% is required to achieve endemic phases.

Effectiveness of regdanvimab treatment for SARS-CoV-2 delta variant, which exhibited decreased in vitro activity: a nationwide real-world multicenter cohort study

Haein Kim, Young Rock Jang, Ji Yeon Lee, Jae-Hoon Ko, Jee Young Lee, Seongcheol Cho, Yong Dae Lee, Junghoon Song, Miri Hyun, Hyun Ah Kim, Soyoon Hwang, Sangmi Ryou, Yoo Jin Na, Joo-Yeon Lee, Changhee Lee, Nan Young Lee, Seunghwan Shin, Ki Tae Kwon, Jin Yong Kim, Kyong Ran Peck

Summary: A retrospective cohort study in South Korea assessed the clinical effectiveness of regdanvimab, an anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody, against emerging variants. The study found that regdanvimab effectively reduced progression to severe disease in the overall study population but showed limited effectiveness in patients with the Delta variant. The study highlights the need to evaluate increased dosage of monoclonal antibody agents for strains with reduced susceptibility.

Impact of vancomycin resistance in Enterococcus faecium bloodstream infection on mortality: A retrospective analysis of nationwide surveillance data *

Kyungmin Huh, Doo Ryeon Chung, Young Eun Ha, Jae-Hoon Ko, Hee Jae Huh, Nam Yong Lee, Sun Young Cho, Cheol-In Kang, Kyong Ran Peck, Jae-Hoon Song

Summary: This study aims to explore the reasons for the poor prognosis of patients with severe vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) infection, whether it is due to vancomycin resistance or the predominance of Enterococcus faecium (Efm) among VRE. The study found that vancomycin resistance was independently associated with increased risk of mortality.

False-positive Aspergillus galactomannan immunoassay in the glucose component of total parenteral nutrition products

Eunbin Chong, Jae-Hoon Ko, Doo Ri Kim, Young Ho Lee, Jinyoung Yang, Haein Kim, Kyungmin Huh, Cheol-In Kang, Doo Ryeon Chung, Kyong Ran Peck, In Hwa Jeong, Tae Yeul Kim, Hee Jae Huh, Nam Yong Lee, Areum Shin, Yae-Jean Kim, You Min Sohn, Sun Young Cho, Eun-Suk Kang

Summary: This study found that the glucose component of TPN products from a specific manufacturer contained a high level of GM antigen, causing false-positive GM test results. This may be due to contamination of GM from the changed supplier of the glucose component. This highlights the importance of reinforcing quality assurance measures during the manufacturing process to prevent GM contamination.

Clinical Effectiveness of Tetracycline-Class Agents Based Regimens in Patients With Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii Bacteremia: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study

Si -Ho Kim, Yu Mi Wi, Kyong Ran Peck

Summary: This study examined the clinical outcome of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia and assessed the effectiveness of tetracyclines-based therapy. Among the 108 patients included in the study, the overall 30-day mortality rate was 71.4%. The Pitt's bacteremia score, colistin-single regimens, and tetracyclines single/tetracyclines-colistin combination regimens were found to be independently associated with 30-day mortality. The combination of tetracyclines and colistin showed a higher survival rate compared to tetracycline or colistin alone.

Parasitology Clinical Utility of Sero-Immunological Responses Against SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid Protein During Subsequent Prevalence of Wild-Type, Delta Variant, and Omicron Variant

Beomki Lee, Jae-Hoon Ko, Jin Yang Baek, Haein Kim, Kyungmin Huh, Sun Young Cho, Cheol-In Kang, Doo Ryeon Chung, Kyong Ran Peck, Eun-Suk Kang

Summary: The clinical utility of sero-immunological responses against the nucleocapsid protein was investigated. The study found lower antibody titers in immunocompromised patients and higher titers in patients with higher severity of infection. Different variants of the virus also showed different seroconversion rates and titers. The nucleocapsid antibody could persist for a long time and provided important clues about the immunogenicity of the protein.
