The Tigecycline In Vitro Surveillance in Taiwan (TIST) study, a nationwide, prospective surveillance during 2006 to 2010, collected a total of 7,793 clinical isolates, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (n = 1,834), penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRSP) (n = 423), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) (n = 219), extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (n = 1,141), ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 1,330), Acinetobacter baumannii (n = 1,645), and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (n = 903), from different specimens from 20 different hospitals in Taiwan. MICs of tigecycline were determined following the criteria of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST-2011). Among drug-resistant Gram-positive pathogens, all of the PRSP isolates were susceptible to tigecycline (MIC90, 0.03 mu g/ml), and only one MRSA isolate (MIC90, 0.5 mu g/ml) and three VRE isolates (MIC90, 0.125 mu g/ml) were nonsusceptible to tigecycline. Among the Gram-negative bacteria, the tigecycline susceptibility rates were 99.65% for ESBL-producing E. coli (MIC90, 0.5 mu g/ml) and 96.32% for ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae (MIC90, 2 mu g/ml) when interpreted by FDA criteria but were 98.7% and 85.8%, respectively, when interpreted by EUCAST-2011 criteria. The susceptibility rate for A. baumannii (MIC90, 4 mu g/ml) decreased from 80.9% in 2006 to 55.3% in 2009 but increased to 73.4% in 2010. A bimodal MIC distribution was found among carbapenem-susceptible A. baumannii isolates, and a unimodal MIC distribution was found among carbapenem-nonsusceptible A. baumannii isolates. In Taiwan, tigecycline continues to have excellent in vitro activity against several major clinically important drug-resistant bacteria, with the exception of A. baumannii.

The association of obesity and dengue severity in hospitalized adult patients

Yu-Yao Chiu, Chun-Yu Lin, Ling-Shan Yu, Wen-Hung Wang, Chung-Hao Huang, Yen-Hsu Chen

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the association between nutritional status and dengue severity in adult patients with laboratory-confirmed dengue. The results showed that obese patients had more petechiae, dyspnea, severe hepatitis, lower nadir platelet count, and higher peak hematocrit level. However, no difference in severe dengue or mortality was observed between the obese and nonobese groups.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the distribution of Enterobacteriaceae in the gut microbiota of hemodialysis patients and analyze its association with clinical parameters. The study found significant differences in the gut microbiota composition at the genus level between hemodialysis patients and the control group, with an increase in the Escherichia-Shigella complex and an association between Klebsiella and emergency room visits. Therefore, further research on the microbiota composition of Enterobacteriaceae is necessary.

Psychological Distress and Physical Adverse Events of COVID-19 Vaccination among Healthcare Workers in Taiwan

Ahmad Rifai, Wan-Ching Wu, Yu-Wen Tang, Mei-Yun Lu, Pei-Jen Chiu, Carol Strong, Chung-Ying Lin, Po-Lin Chen, Wen-Chien Ko, Nai-Ying Ko

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological distress among healthcare workers (HCWs), and this study investigated the association between psychological distress and adverse events (AEs), as well as the determinants of protective behaviors in Taiwanese HCWs. The results showed that depression, distress, and anger were significantly associated with physical AEs, while suicidal thoughts were related to systemic AEs after COVID-19 vaccination. Older age and female gender were associated with more engagement in preventive behaviors, and suicidal thoughts were related to the occurrence of systemic AEs among HCWs. Doctors performed better at preventive behaviors compared to nurses and other HCWs, and HCWs experiencing anxiety and nervousness tended to avoid crowds.

Summary: This study found that treatment regimens with DTG/ABC/3TC were more likely to be discontinued in advanced HIV patients compared to B/F/TAF, but there were no significant differences in viral suppression and virological failure between the two regimens. Therefore, individualized treatment approaches are crucial for advanced HIV patients.

Summary: For people with human immunodeficiency virus (PWH) who had no response or seroreversion after primary hepatitis A virus (HAV) vaccination, an accelerated 2-dose revaccination (vs 1-dose) produced higher antibody titers and elicited a higher serological response rate at week 48 for nonresponders.

DC-SIGN and Galectin-3 individually and collaboratively regulate H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza A virus infection via interaction with viral envelope hemagglutinin protein

Zih-Syuan Yang, Wen-Hung Wang, Yu-Ting Lin, Chih-Yen Lin, Aspiro Nayim Urbina, Arunee Thitithanyanont, Po-Liang Lu, Yen-Hsu Chen, Sheng-Fan Wang

Summary: This study investigates the individual and collaborative roles of DC-SIGN and Gal3 in H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza virus (AIV) infection. It is found that DC-SIGN expression significantly promotes viral infection, while Gal3 knockdown reduces viral infection. The co-expression of DC-SIGN and Gal3 enhances infectivity of H5N1 and H7N9 viruses, with stronger regulatory capabilities for H5N1. The study reveals the significance of DC-SIGN and Gal3 in regulating AIV infection and suggests the potential of targeting their interaction with HA protein as antiviral strategies.
