Summary: From 2010 to 2020, approximately 30,000 cases of dengue were reported in the US territories, with the highest incidence during outbreak years. Children and adolescents aged <20 years were disproportionately affected, highlighting the need for interventions tailored for this population. Ongoing education for healthcare providers and dengue case surveillance and serotyping are important for improving patient outcomes and guiding future control measures.

Summary: MarketScan, a commercial insurance claims database, is a reliable source for monitoring trends in Lyme disease diagnoses in the United States. Despite differences in diagnostic patterns, the age and sex distributions of cases are similar to those reported through surveillance. Further investigation is needed to understand epidemiologic differences, such as misdiagnoses in low-incidence states.

Summary: A total of 30,903 dengue cases were reported from four U.S. territories during 2010-2020, with Puerto Rico having the highest number of cases. Dengue is endemic in American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Children and adolescents are disproportionately affected by dengue, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

Summary: Controlling the use of critically important antimicrobials in food animals is essential in reducing the transmission of antimicrobial resistant bacteria from animals to humans. A study conducted in Australia found that layer hens have low rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Escherichia coli, possibly due to strict controls on antimicrobial usage and national biosecurity measures.

Summary: Humanity is facing a growing threat from multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii. The last-line treatment, polymyxin, is facing challenges due to the occurrence of polymyxin-resistant bacteria. Understanding the impact of polymyxin resistance on the virulence and fitness of these bacteria is crucial for prevention and intervention.

Summary: The delayed treatment of pediatric periorbital cellulitis can have severe consequences, making it crucial to understand the appropriate antibiotic options for effective treatment. By comparing changes in cultured bacteria and drug susceptibility tests over two decades, we have identified empirical antibiotic choices for this condition.

Summary: This study investigated injury trends, injury distribution, and disease burden in three surveillance hospitals in Urumqi from 2006 to 2018. The results showed that males were the main population affected by injuries, particularly those aged 15-29. Injuries in females mainly occurred at home, and the most common causes of injury were falls, blunt force, and motor vehicle accidents. The evaluation of disease burden indicated that injuries accounted for a significant proportion of the overall burden in the three hospitals.

Summary: Cannabis-associated emergency department visits are increasing in the United States, with significant growth observed among different age groups and regions. Potential explanations for this increase include increased availability and use of cannabis products, as well as a diverse range of products in the marketplace. Strategies are necessary to prevent youth initiation, limit harmful cannabis use among adults, and ensure safe storage in places where cannabis use is legal.

Summary: This study investigated the demographics, risk factors, microbiological characteristics, and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of infectious keratitis (IK) in Taiwan over the past 15 years. The findings showed a decline in contact lens-related IK and an increase in IK related to systemic diseases. Gram-positive bacteria were more commonly isolated than gram-negative bacteria. The prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a decreasing trend, while coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and Propionibacterium species were increasingly detected. Antibiotic susceptibility of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria remained stable throughout the study period.

Summary: This study examined neonatal mortality burden and trends in refugee camps using routine health information system data from 2006 to 2017. Findings showed that refugee camp neonatal mortality rates were lower than that of the immediate host community in most countries and years with national population-based surveys available. The study highlights the importance of improving data reporting systems to monitor and improve neonatal health in refugee populations.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the association between nutritional status and dengue severity in adult patients with laboratory-confirmed dengue. The results showed that obese patients had more petechiae, dyspnea, severe hepatitis, lower nadir platelet count, and higher peak hematocrit level. However, no difference in severe dengue or mortality was observed between the obese and nonobese groups.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the distribution of Enterobacteriaceae in the gut microbiota of hemodialysis patients and analyze its association with clinical parameters. The study found significant differences in the gut microbiota composition at the genus level between hemodialysis patients and the control group, with an increase in the Escherichia-Shigella complex and an association between Klebsiella and emergency room visits. Therefore, further research on the microbiota composition of Enterobacteriaceae is necessary.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused psychological distress among healthcare workers (HCWs), and this study investigated the association between psychological distress and adverse events (AEs), as well as the determinants of protective behaviors in Taiwanese HCWs. The results showed that depression, distress, and anger were significantly associated with physical AEs, while suicidal thoughts were related to systemic AEs after COVID-19 vaccination. Older age and female gender were associated with more engagement in preventive behaviors, and suicidal thoughts were related to the occurrence of systemic AEs among HCWs. Doctors performed better at preventive behaviors compared to nurses and other HCWs, and HCWs experiencing anxiety and nervousness tended to avoid crowds.

Summary: This study found that treatment regimens with DTG/ABC/3TC were more likely to be discontinued in advanced HIV patients compared to B/F/TAF, but there were no significant differences in viral suppression and virological failure between the two regimens. Therefore, individualized treatment approaches are crucial for advanced HIV patients.

Summary: This study investigates the individual and collaborative roles of DC-SIGN and Gal3 in H5N1 and H7N9 avian influenza virus (AIV) infection. It is found that DC-SIGN expression significantly promotes viral infection, while Gal3 knockdown reduces viral infection. The co-expression of DC-SIGN and Gal3 enhances infectivity of H5N1 and H7N9 viruses, with stronger regulatory capabilities for H5N1. The study reveals the significance of DC-SIGN and Gal3 in regulating AIV infection and suggests the potential of targeting their interaction with HA protein as antiviral strategies.
