Summary: The study compared the frequency of selected enzymatic virulence factor genes among non-duplicated carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates, finding a higher prevalence of alkaline protease gene and a 37.4% detection rate for neuraminidase-1 gene. Significant differences in the prevalence of lasB and nan1 were observed between MBL-positive and MBL-negative strains.

PCB-77 biodegradation potential of biosurfactant producing bacterial isolates recovered from contaminated soil

Summary: This study obtained bacterial isolates from PCB-contaminated soil that have the ability to enhance the biodegradation of PCB-77. Four isolates were selected for further study, and their degradation abilities were confirmed through analysis. The results suggest that these isolates can be used for the biodegradation of PCBs in contaminated soil.

The Effect of Decreased Antipseudomonal Drug Consumption on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Incidence and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Profiles over 9 Years in a Lebanese Tertiary Care Center

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed the resistance patterns and trends of 1827 Pseudomonas isolates in a tertiary medical center in Lebanon from January 2010 to December 2018. The incidence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in sputum samples significantly decreased, while there was no trend in bloodstream infection. The study also found a decrease in resistance to certain antibiotics and a reduction in the consumption of antipseudomonal antibiotics. Antimicrobial stewardship had a positive impact on nosocomial epidemiology.

Summary: The prompt detection of carbapenemases among Gram-negative bacteria is vital for infection control. This study evaluated a new immunochromatographic assay for detecting carbapenemases and found it to be highly effective and faster than traditional methods. The assay detected more carbapenemases than the standard test, especially in certain types of bacteria.

Summary: High rates of MDR and XDR Pseudomonas aeruginosa were found in a tertiary care hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Resistance to aminoglycosides and carbapenems was also high, with methyltransferases and metallo-beta-lactamases identified as the main mechanisms of resistance in these isolates. The presence of bla(NDM) and rmtF genes in the strains suggests rapid dissemination in the Egyptian environment.

Summary: This study analyzed the phenotypic and genomic characteristics of ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) resistance in different GES-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. The results showed that all CZA-resistant isolates belonged to the ST235 clone and O11 serotype, and different mutations within the bla(GES)(-20) gene were associated with CZA resistance, suggesting the involvement of other resistance mechanisms.

Emergence of Ceftazidime- and Avibactam-Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase-Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in China

Summary: Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa (KPC-PA) strains were found in 40.4% of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CRPA) isolates, with half of them resistant to ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI). Eight plasmid types and two mobile genetic elements mediating bla(KPC-2) transmission were identified through sequencing. Curing bla(KPC-2) plasmids in 28 strains restored CAZ-AVI susceptibility, indicating its role in resistance.

Decreased efficacy of antimicrobial agents in a polymicrobial environment

Summary: The presence of diverse polymicrobial communities in the airways of individuals with cystic fibrosis can hinder the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment. A study showed that growth in a polymicrobial environment protects the target microorganism from the effects of specific antimicrobial agents. This decreased efficacy is found to have both physiological and genetic components.

Summary: The first outbreak of a multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain carrying Verona integron-borne metallo-β-lactamase (VIM)-2 occurred in two neighbouring hospitals in Sweden. The outbreak was caused by a clonal strain belonging to the high-risk clonal complex 111 and was only susceptible to gentamicin and colistin. The waterborne transmission of P. aeruginosa can be reduced by implementing proactive control measures to limit bacterial load in sinks.

Molecular characterization of NDM-1-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates from hospitalized patients in Iran

Summary: The study investigated 29 carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates carrying the bla(NDM-1) gene in different cities of Iran. The isolates showed resistance to imipenem and ertapenem and carried other MBL encoding genes. DLST typing revealed partial diversity among the isolates, with DLST 25-11 cluster having the most infected or colonized patients.

Summary: The study evaluated matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-iime of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-S) as diagnostic alternatives for the detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sequence type (ST) 175 isolates involved in a hospital outbreak. The results showed that the combination of these two technologies, along with machine learning tools, can effectively monitor high-risk clones and isolates in nosocomial outbreaks.

Summary: The production of PER-like extended-spectrum β-lactamases has been linked to reduced susceptibility to certain drugs. The blaPER-2 gene has been mainly found in Argentina and neighboring countries but little is known about its transmission through different plasmid groups. A study analyzed the genetic platforms of PER-producing bacteria and found that the blaPER-2 gene is encoded on plasmids of different incompatibility groups, indicating potential dissemination through various plasmids. The study also identified the role of certain insertion sequence elements in the mobilization and further dissemination of the blaPER-2 gene.
