Phenylboronic Acid-Modified Gold Nanoclusters as a Nanoantibiotic to Treat Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis-Caused Infections

Summary: This study focuses on the issues of drug resistance and high toxicity in vancomycin, and presents mercaptophenylboronic acid (MBA)-modified gold nanoclusters (Au-44(MBA)(18)) as a solution. The results show that Au-44(MBA)(18) exhibits excellent antibacterial activities against drug-resistant bacteria and can interact with bacteria by attaching to teichoic-acid and destroying the cell wall, as well as binding to bacterial DNA. It has multiple administration routes and high biosafety, making it a potential nanoantibiotic for treating multidrug-resistant bacterial infections.

Summary: This study found significant associations between gut microbiome and incident asthma and COPD in a population-based cohort of 7115 adults. Machine learning models demonstrated the predictive capabilities of baseline gut microbiome abundance for asthma and COPD, outperforming individual conventional risk factors. The integration of gut microbiome and conventional risk factors further improved prediction capacities.

Conventional versus extended-pulsed fidaxomicin dosing in patients at high risk of recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection: a propensity score analysis

Summary: In this study, the recurrence rate of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) was compared between conventional dosing of fidaxomicin (FCD) and extended-pulsed dosing of fidaxomicin (FEPD). The results showed no significant difference in the recurrence rate between the two dosing regimens. Further clinical trials or large observational studies are needed to compare the efficacy of these two dosing regimens.

Severe Vancomycin Intoxication in an Infant Not Needing Dialysis: A Case Report and Literature Review

Summary: Vancomycin nephrotoxicity is a major clinical concern. We reported a case of severe vancomycin intoxication in an infant and conducted a literature review, which revealed a paucity of reported pediatric cases. Among the 23 pediatric cases with high vancomycin serum levels, 73.9% developed nephrotoxicity, with hemodialysis being the most common intervention.

Genetic risk factors, such as rs67522722, play a role in CRT-related hearing loss. It is important for healthcare providers to inform patients and their parents about the risks of these toxicities.

This research aims to develop a therapeutic agent effective against metronidazole or vancomycin-resistant C. difficile strains, with promising results from testing a novel compound, Raja 42, which showed effectiveness against most isolates, including those resistant to metronidazole and vancomycin.

Lymphedema Is a Significant Risk Factor for Failure After Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty

Intrawound low-dose vancomycin is superior to high-dose in controlling the risk of wound dehiscence in spine surgeries

Summary: This study compared the risk of wound dehiscence with different doses of intrawound vancomycin and evaluated its effectiveness in preventing surgical site infections. The results showed that the risk of wound dehiscence was significantly higher in the low-dose vancomycin group compared to the high-dose vancomycin group, and there was no significant difference in postoperative infections between the two groups. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of using a low-dose of intrawound vancomycin in preventing postoperative infections.

Is postauricular injection a systemic or a topical route for inner ear drug delivery?

Summary: This study compared the differences in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity and systemic adverse effects between postauricular and systemic administration. The results showed that postauricular injection can cause greater hair cell damage in the ipsilateral cochleae, but significant damage in the contralateral cochleae and systemic adverse effects were also observed. Postauricular injection is a hybrid administration route that combines the features of topical and systemic administration for inner ear drug delivery.

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants in the treatment of portal vein thrombosis

A survey found low satisfaction with time allocation, quality improvement, research, teaching, and recognition. Rewards and advancement pathways are also lacking. This white paper provides an update on the current state of rewards and recognition for clinical pharmacists and offers suggestions for improving job satisfaction and retention.
