Summary: SCCmec, predominantly found in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, has been shown to have a larger diversity of elements in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). A clinical strain of Staphylococcus hominis was found to carry a composite SCCmec element with an uncharacterized ccr1 and type A mec gene combination, along with a secondary element containing ccr4. The complex structure of the element suggests a high level of recombination in SCCmec in CoNS.

Summary: The present study compared the use of mPCR and WGS with SCCmecFinder database to identify the SCCmec in Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) isolated from dairy cattle. Both methods detected the presence of SCCmecIV in some SA and NAS. SCCmecFinder also identified untypeable SCCmec and pseudo SCCmec. However, SCCmecFinder and ResFinder could not identify all mec gene allotypes accurately. The study suggests that a specific classification of SCCmec in NAS would be helpful in epidemiology, and the presence of mecA gene and complete SCCmec is linked to cefoxitin resistance.

Summary: This study conducted genomic comparative analyses of MRSP isolates from dogs and humans, revealing differences in prophage distribution and identification of a novel composite pathogenicity island in ST181 isolates. Among the different STs, ST45 isolates showed the highest genomic diversity, suggesting potential host adaptation leading to different colonization patterns.

Summary: This study characterized the SCCmec elements in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and identified two novel variants and a lineage-specific pseudo-SCCmec element. The findings indicate ongoing evolution of SCCmec elements in CC398 and ST88 clones, highlighting the importance of further surveillance to understand their biological significance.

Summary: This study identified and compared the SCCmec types of MRSA or MRNAS isolated from different countries in various animal species and humans. The results confirmed a high prevalence of SCCmec types IV and V in LA-MRS and CA-MRS in Belgium, highlighting the possible public health hazard and absence of SCCmec in some MRNAS.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular epidemiology of staphylococci in a large hospital in China and found high antibiotic resistance among staphylococci, as well as transmission in both the hospital environment and personnel. These findings highlight the need for improved cleaning strategies to decrease the dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci in Chinese hospitals.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of resistance and virulence genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among different animal hosts. Whole genome sequencing of S. aureus isolates from various animal species revealed widespread sharing of antibiotic resistance and superantigen genes. The findings provide insights for developing strategies to combat high-risk clones.

Summary: In Taiwan, 315 Staphylococcus aureus isolates were collected from 16 hospitals in 2020. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was mainly associated with community-acquired infections (CAIs) and bacteremia. The study found that MRSA-infected patients were older than MSSA-infected patients, and some MRSA isolates were not susceptible to novel anti-MRSA antimicrobials.
