A bacterial strain designated 11N27(T) was isolated from an agricultural soil sample. Cells of this strain were Gram-reaction-variable, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming, white-pigmented, peritrichously flagellated and hydrolysed xanthine. The major fatty acids of strain 11N27(T) were anteiso-C-15 (: 0), iso-C-16 : (0) and C-16: 0. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown phospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, one unknown aminophospholipid and two unknown polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain 11N27(T) was 50.3 mol%. MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone. meso-Diaminopimelic acid was the diagnostic diamino acid in the peptidoglycan. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain 11N27(T) was phylogenetically related to Paenibacillus mendelii C/2(T) (96.2 % sequence similarity) and Paenibacillus sepulcri CMM 7311(T) (96.0 %). The genotypic and phenotypic data showed that strain 11N27(T) could be distinguished from phylogenetically related species and that this strain represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus. The name Paenibacillus xanthinilyticus sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain 11N27(T)(=KACC 17935(T)= NBRC 109108(T)).

Genome insights into the pharmaceutical and plant growth promoting features of the novel species Nocardia alni sp. nov

Imen Nouioui, Sung-Min Ha, Inwoo Baek, Jongsik Chun, Michael Goodfellow

Summary: This study identified a new species within the genus Nocardia, called Nocardia alni sp. nov, through a genome-based taxonomic analysis. The strain ncl2(T) showed unique characteristics and was closely related to Nocardia nova, Nocardia jiangxiensis, Nocardia miyuensis, and Nocardia vaccinii. The genomes of N. alni and N. vaccinii strains contained multiple biosynthetic gene clusters, suggesting the potential synthesis of novel specialized products, particularly antibiotics.

Cellulomonas fulva sp. nov., isolated from oil- contaminated soil

Ram Hari Dahal, Jungmin Kim, Dong-Uk Kim, Ke Dong, Yongseok Hong, Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary

Summary: A new bacterial species belonging to the genus Cellulomonas was isolated from oil-contaminated soil. This strain, named Cellulomonas fulva sp. nov., is gram-positive, motile, aerobic, and rod-shaped. It showed growth at a wide pH and temperature range, and had high tolerance to salt. Phylogenetic analysis revealed its close relationship with other members of the genus Cellulomonas.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of genetically modified crops on soil microbial community structures and found that there was no significant difference between GM and non-GM crops. The level of the transgene in GM soybean plots increased during active growth and then gradually decreased, while in GM hot pepper plots it fluctuated according to the flowering stages.

Metabolic Versatility of the Family Halieaceae Revealed by the Genomics of Novel Cultured Isolates

Shan-Hui Li, Ilnam Kang, Jang-Cheon Cho

Summary: This study provides insights into the phylogeny and metabolic potential of the family Halieaceae through genomic analyses of six pure cultured strains. The analyses revealed novel species representation and the presence of previously uncultured subclades. The strains exhibited aerobic chemo- or photoheterotrophic lifestyles, with some possessing genes for proteorhodopsin or aerobic anoxygenic phototrophy. Genes for CO2 fixation and polysaccharide utilization were also detected. These findings expand the phylogenetic and metabolic diversity of Halieaceae and are important for future ecophysiological studies.

UACG: Up-to-Date Archaeal Core Genes and Software for Phylogenomic Tree Reconstruction

Seong-In Na, Michael James Bailey, Mauricio Chalita, Jae Hyoung Cho, Jongsik Chun

Summary: In the post-genomic era, phylogenomics is widely used to discover evolutionary relationships between microorganisms. This study established an up-to-date archaeal core gene set (UACG) for inferring archaeal phylogenomic trees. The UACG tool was found to be consistent with the orthoANIu dendrogram, in contrast to the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny which showed discrepancies. The UACG software tool is available at https://www.ezbiocloud.net/tools/uacg.
