It should be possible, for a city, to achieve a healthy environment, an active green space, and an urban distribution of the size of a systematic planning of functional and aesthetic qualities, and it will be possible with the development of an urban design concept. The adequacy of the standard value of green space is usually specified in the relevant legislation, and the current per capita of the city is identified by comparing it to the amount of green space. In this study, the distribution and amount of green space in Kutahya is examined as well as the distribution of green areas on a neighbourhood scale. Size and per capita rates are evaluated. Even distribution of the distance and accessibility of green areas throughout the city are closely related to the provision of recreational needs. Different sizes of green area, recreational activities, and accessibility standards vary depending on the city unit they serve. According to the digitization of parks composed of polygons in the ArcGIS attribute table for calculation, parks in the study area consist of 167 different parcels, 48 of which (28%) are 1500m(2) or less in area. Most small parklands were 306m(2); the largest urban park is at the southern entrance of the city, with an area of 109.214m(2). Parks in the study area cover a total area of 614.272m(2). Functionally linked, an integrated system of green spaces will allow the city to develop this natural potential in a sustainable way.

Examination of the Change in the Vegetation Around the Kirka Boron Mine Site by Using Remote Sensing Techniques

Mehmet Cetin, Ozge Isik Pekkan, Gulsah Bilge Ozturk, Muzeyyen Anil Senyel Kurkcuoglu, Tuncay Kucukpehlivan, Alper Cabuk

Summary: The change in vegetation cover in Kirka boron mining site was examined using unsupervised classification and vegetation indexes from satellite images. The boundary of the mining area could not be determined using vegetation indexes, but unsupervised classification techniques revealed that the mining area occupies 1144.5 hectares. NDVI and NDRe analyses showed different results on water surfaces, while similar results were found in the rest of the areas. Sentinel satellite images, with higher spatial resolution, were able to capture more details compared to Landsat images in NDVI analyses.

Summary: The change in soil quality due to soil pollution significantly affects the ecosystem. Heavy metals, such as nickel and cobalt, are particularly notorious as environmental pollutants due to their toxicity and bioaccumulation. Monitoring and mapping their concentrations is of great importance. In this study, top soil samples from the city center were analyzed for nickel and cobalt concentrations, and the data were statistically evaluated and mapped using geographic information systems (GIS) and interpolation methods. The results showed that the areas with the highest concentrations were generally located in the center of the study area, indicating increased pollution in areas with high human activities.

Variation of Al concentrations depending on the growing environment in some indoor plants that used in architectural designs

Mehmet Cetin, Adel Easa Saad Abo Aisha

Summary: Indoor air pollution has a larger impact on human health than outdoor air pollution, and using plants is an effective method to reduce indoor air pollution. This study evaluated the aluminum accumulation potential of seven ornamental plants commonly used in interior design, and found that the species with the highest aluminum accumulation potential is the Difenbachia plant.

Determining the suitable settlement areas in Alanya with GIS-based site selection analyses

Sedat Dogan, Cem Kilicoglu, Halil Akinci, Hakan Sevik, Mehmet Cetin

Summary: Urbanization requires the establishment of new settlement areas. Considering natural disaster risks during the selection of settlement areas can prevent large-scale losses. This study determined suitable settlement areas in the Alanya district and found that flooding is the most important natural disaster risk.

Copula-based multivariate standardized drought index (MSDI) and length, severity, and frequency of hydrological drought in the Upper Sakarya Basin, Turkey

Tugrul Varol, Ayhan Atesoglu, Halil Baris Ozel, Mehmet Cetin

Summary: Drought, a significant threat to social life, is examined and analyzed by its types, and it is crucial for decision-makers to have advanced methods for monitoring and assessing drought. Multivariate drought indices were developed to overcome the limitations of current methods and accurately determine the level of drought. In a specific region with different characteristics, MSDI was modeled based on SPEI and SRI data, showing acceptable performance in estimating drought across multiple perspectives and time scales.

Determination of the Impacts of Mining Activities on Land Cover and Soil Organic Carbon: Altintepe Gold Mine Case, Turkey

Mehmet Cetin, Ozge Isik Pekkan, Gulsah Bilge Ozturk, Saye Nihan Cabuk, Muzeyyen Anil Senyel Kurkcuoglu, Alper Cabuk

Summary: Mining activities degrade the landscape and ecosystems, leading to changes in soil characteristics. This study aims to develop a practical method for determining the changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) in a gold mine in Turkey. Remote sensing and data analysis techniques were used to map the land cover and calculate SOC stock changes. The results showed significant SOC loss due to land cover changes caused by mining activities. This alternative approach can provide valuable information for the future operations and management of mine sites and surrounding environments.

Summary: This study aims to detect the changes in 5 POI categories within 250, 500, and 1000 m catchment areas around major public investments and transportation lines between 2008 and 2019 in Eskisehir city, Turkey. The results revealed that establishing the tram line (ESTRAM) affected the emergence of POIs from 2008 to 2019, while no significant influence of other public investments on the POIs was detected in the city. Some investments, including Ataturk Culture and Convention Center, S,elalepark, the Zoo, and the City Hospital, had limited impacts on POIs. This research is expected to contribute to the prediction of the effects of public investments on the spatial and functional development processes and provide an analytical framework.

Evaluation of UTFVI index effect on climate change in terms of urbanization

Burcu Cevik Degerli, Mehmet Cetin

Summary: Urban heat island density and occurrence are closely related to land use/land cover and land surface temperature variation. The effect of UHI can be quantitatively described with the urban thermal area variance index. This study aims to evaluate the UHI effect of the city of Samsun using the UTFVI index. LST data from 2000 ETM + and 2020 OLI/TIRS Landsat images were analyzed, showing an increased UHI effect in Samsun's coastal area over 20 years. Field analysis of the UTFVI maps created revealed significant changes in different slices, with the strongest slice showing the most intense increase and indicating the UHI effect.
