Mitochondria may play important roles in metabolic diseases, neurodegeneration, and aging. Therefore, noninvasive methods to assess mitochondrial metabolic function in humans are urgently needed. We demonstrated that the C-13-breath test using [1-C-13] acetate and [1-C-13] pyruvate holds great potential for assessing the metabolic status in mitochondria. The C-13-breath test allows us to assess dynamic metabolic pathways noninvasively within 60 min. This test will not only facilitate clinical evaluation of patients but also provide huge opportunities for further understanding of these conditions. The potential of the C-13-breath test using C-13-labeled pyruvate in humans cannot be overemphasized.

Reading activity prevents long-term decline in cognitive function in older people: evidence from a 14-year longitudinal study

Yu-Hung Chang, I-Chien Wu, Chao A. Hsiung

Summary: The study found that older adults with higher reading frequencies, especially those reading at least once a week, were less likely to experience cognitive decline, and the protective effect of reading on cognitive function was observed across all levels of education.

Urinary incontinence and its association with socioeconomic status among middle-aged and older persons in Taiwan: A population-based study

Yi-Fang Lin, Yu-Chun Lin, I-Chien Wu, Yu-Hung Chang

Summary: The study found that women with secondary education were less likely to experience urinary incontinence, while individuals with severe economic hardships had an increased risk of urinary incontinence. Retired men and service workers/salespersons were more prone to urinary incontinence.

Differential relationship of uric acid to mortality and clinical biomarkers of aging according to grip strength in older adults: a cohort study

Summary: The study found a J-shaped association between serum uric acid and the risk of all-cause mortality in older adults, primarily for those with low grip strength. Participants with low grip strength showed a non-linear association between serum uric acid levels and mortality risk. Those with both high serum uric acid and low grip strength, or low serum uric acid and low grip strength, exhibited greater risks of mortality and deviations in biomarkers of specific systems.

Assessment of incident frailty hazard associated with depressive symptoms in a Taiwanese longitudinal study

Che-Chia Chang, Chi-Shin Wu, Han-Yun Tseng, Chun-Yi Lee, I-Chien Wu, Chih-Cheng Hsu, Hsing-Yi Chang, Yen-Feng Chiu, Chao A. Hsiung

Summary: Depressive symptoms increased the risk of developing frailty among the older Asian population. The impact of late-life depressive symptoms on physical health was notable. Future policies on geriatric public health need to focus more on treatment and intervention against geriatric depressive symptoms to prevent incident frailty among older population.

Summary: This study proposed a combined score developed using electrocardiographic parameters to predict the risk of cardiovascular mortality in the elderly population, proving to be effective in primary prevention. The ECG parameters were significantly associated with all-cause death, while the EA score showed high efficacy in predicting susceptibility to different death outcomes, demonstrating its potential for clinical practice.

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Model for Early Detection of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and Mortality Prediction in Young to Middle-Aged Adults

Chih-Min Liu, Ming-En Hsieh, Yu-Feng Hu, Tzu-Yin Wei, I-Chien Wu, Pei-Fen Chen, Yenn-Jiang Lin, Satoshi Higa, Nobumori Yagi, Shih-Ann Chen, Vincent S. Tseng

Summary: An artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled model was developed for early detection and risk stratification of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) using 12-lead ECGs. The AI model showed improved diagnostic performance compared to cardiologists' diagnosis, and it was independently associated with higher cardiovascular or all-cause mortality. The AI model's predictive power for mortality was consistently valid among patients of different ages, sexes, and comorbidities.

Sleep habits are associated with cognition decline in physically robust, but not in frail participants: a longitudinal observational study

Shu-Chun Chuang, I. -Chien Wu, Jen-Jen Chang, Yi-Fen Tsai, Chiu-Wen Cheng, Yen-Feng Chiu, Hsing-Yi Chang, Marion M. Lee, Chih-Cheng Hsu, Chao Agnes Hsiung

Summary: This study investigated the association between sleep problems and cognition, finding a relationship between sleep problems and cognitive decline. Specifically, in physically robust individuals, short total sleep duration, excessive daytime sleepiness, low sleep efficiency, and insomnia complaints were associated with cognitive decline. The association was stronger for the sleep summary score.
