Summary: In this study, we review the taxonomy, phylogeny, and ecology of cyrtophorian ciliates in China, providing a comprehensive understanding of their classification and evolutionary history. We provide a species checklist, an illustrated identification key, and molecular data for the study of phylogeny. Our findings suggest that the separation of the stomatogenesis zone from the left kineties is a key evolutionary event in cyrtophorian ciliates, leading to the formation of an independent sexual organelle.

Summary: Endosymbionts play important roles in the evolution, growth, development, reproduction, and environmental fitness of insect hosts. The sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, can be infected by Nardonella and Rickettsia at different rates, which vary according to the developmental stages of the weevil. The relative titer of Nardonella is significantly related to the developmental stages of C. formicarius.

Summary: In this study, the phylogeny of lionfishes was reconstructed using genetic sequencing, leading to a revised taxonomy. The results showed that Dendrochirus and Pterois were not monophyletic and were divided into multiple clades. Based on molecular and morphological data, Dendrochirus and Pterois were proposed for D. I and Pt. I, respectively, while a new genus, Neochirus, was proposed for the D. II clade. Furthermore, the genera Pteropterus and Nemapterois were revalidated for Pt. II and D. III, respectively.

Summary: The entire mitochondrial genomes of four Trichiurus species from the coasts of the China Seas have been sequenced and compared with the mitochondrial genome of T. gangeticus. The gene arrangements in the mitogenomes of the studied species are consistent with those in most teleost mitogenomes. The Trichiurus species composition in the Indian Ocean is different from that in Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and there are at least two Trichiurus species in Indian Ocean.

Summary: The chloroplast genomes of Sambucus species showed high similarities in structure and gene coding, with specific sequence variations in certain regions that can be used as candidate barcodes for species discrimination. The study also confirmed the monophyly of Sambucus plants and revealed the separation of different populations. These findings suggest that the chloroplast genome of Sambucus plants is a valuable genetic resource for resolving taxonomic discrepancies and conducting molecular evolutionary studies.

Summary: Brucella intermedia, a non-fermentative bacterium, has intrinsic resistance to polymyxins, including colistin. Efflux pump inhibitors such as verapamil, reserpine, phe-arg beta-naphthylamide dihydrochloride, and carbonyl cyanide 3-chloro phenyl hydrazone were evaluated on colistin-resistant strains of B. intermedia, and it was found that the combination of CO and CCCP significantly reduced the colistin minimal inhibitory concentration, indicating the involvement of an efflux pump mechanism. Inhibitory effects on biofilm formation and a bactericidal effect were also observed.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of different bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) morphology in infective endocarditis (IE). Patients were divided into two groups based on echocardiographic definition: right-left coronary (RL type) and right noncoronary or left noncoronary (non-RL type) cusp fusion. The study found that patients with BAV and IE may have different clinical and echocardiographic features according to valve morphology, and they tend to be referred late, even with pre-existing BAV disease.

Summary: This article reports a novel bacterial strain Marseille-P4005(T) isolated from a stool sample of a healthy donor. It is a Gram-stain negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rod that grows optimally at 37 degrees C and at pH 7.0. Genomic analysis revealed it as a new species within the genus Agathobaculum, named Agathobaculum massiliense sp. nov. The strain showed resistance to several antibiotics and exhibited specific metabolic capabilities.

Summary: We used whole genome sequencing to analyze mutations in SARS-CoV-2 during the deadliest wave of the COVID-19 epidemic in Senegal. A total of 291 genotypable consensus genome sequences were obtained, revealing diversification and the presence of a Senegalese strain belonging to the P.1.14 sublineage of the Brazilian P.1 lineage. This study highlights the significant genomic variations of SARS-CoV-2 in Senegal.

Summary: Two new bacterial strains, Marseille-P2698(T) and Marseille-P2260(T), were isolated from human stools using the culturomic method. These two strains were fully described using the taxonogenomic approach. Marseille-P2698(T) was identified as a Gram-negative, motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium, while Marseille-P2260(T) was identified as a Gram-positive, motile, spore-forming rod-shaped bacterium.

Summary: Rapid determination of drug efficacy against bacterial pathogens is crucial for detecting potentially resistant bacteria and optimizing the use of antimicrobials. This study proposes a simplified method for assessing antimicrobial efficacy by detecting immediate damage to bacterial cells using tabletop SEM. The method involves staining unaffected bacterial cell envelopes and whole affected cells, with brighter images indicating lethal damage. By quantifying single-cell images based on brightness, the efficacy of antimicrobials in causing bacterial-cell-envelope damage can be determined.
