Summary: Robot-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy (RATE) shows advantages in reducing the rate of local recurrence within the surgical field compared to conventional thoracoscopic esophagectomy (TE), with similar outcomes in terms of mediastinal lymph node dissection, duration of surgery, and postoperative complications. However, there are limitations in accessibility to certain lymph nodes and anastomotic sites during RATE.

Summary: The depth of RM involvement in esophagectomy cancer specimens is associated with patients' survival and recurrence rates. Patients with direct RM involvement (0 mm) had a median survival of 13.2 months and a high recurrence rate of 71%, significantly worse than those with negative RM. The study also found that in patients with nodal disease, direct RM was associated with lower recurrence and survival rates compared to negative RM.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the risk factors for recurrence of esophageal cancer after surgery and propose an appropriate surveillance protocol. The findings showed a correlation between the appearance and worsening of symptoms and recurrence. Routine imaging examinations every 6 months and clinical outpatient follow-up at shorter intervals during the first 24 months after surgery are recommended.

Summary: The VAME group showed superior outcomes in terms of operation time, number of dissected lymph nodes, intraoperative blood loss, incidence of pneumonia, and length of hospital stay compared to the VATE group. Chyle leak incidence appeared to be lower in the VAME group, but further studies are needed to confirm its significance.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of the hybrid mediastino-thoracoscopic approach with the conventional thoracoscopic approach and identified the advantages and disadvantages of the hybrid approach. The results showed that the hybrid group had more elderly patients, more cardiovascular disease, a shorter right lung collapse time, and differences in postoperative hoarseness and sternal-vertebral distance compared to the conventional group. The conclusion was that the hybrid approach is safe for elderly or cardiopulmonary diseased patients, but a short sternal-vertebral distance may be a risk factor for postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy.

Summary: This study investigated the short- and long-term outcomes of thoracoscopic esophagectomy (TE) in older patients and found that the overall survival and relapse-free survival were worse in the elderly group compared to the non-elderly group, especially when pulmonary complications occurred. Therefore, perioperative management to prevent pulmonary complications is crucial for improving the long-term outcomes of older patients receiving TE.

Summary: The feasibility of using the mesangium or membrane anatomy theory to guide thoracolaparoscopic radical esophagectomy for esophageal cancer was explored. The mesoesophageal group showed significant advantages in terms of surgical duration, blood loss, lymph node harvest, complications, and postoperative recovery.

Summary: This study evaluated the patterns and timing of recurrence in TESCC patients after treatment with NACRT and esophagectomy, considering TRG as useful for establishing perioperative treatment strategies, especially for TRG1 patients. NACRT non-responders (TRG1 patients) experienced higher locoregional recurrence rates and earlier recurrence with distant or locoregional metastasis.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different methods and intervals of recurrence detection on oncological outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer after esophagectomy. The results showed that routine surveillance could detect approximately 70% of recurrences, and different pStages of esophageal cancer required different intervals of imaging surveillance.

Summary: The study demonstrated that long-term survival is achievable for patients with cT4b thoracic esophageal cancer treated with dCRT, with a 3-year survival rate exceeding 20%. Locoregional recurrence was the most common failure pattern. Significant prognosticators for patient survival included age, BMI, N stage, and tumor length.

Summary: Marine biofilms are diverse microbial communities that can resist environmental disturbance, but can also be a nuisance. This study investigates the shifts in bacterial communities and the effects of UV-C treatment on biofilm maturation. The results suggest that UV-C irradiation can effectively remove biomass and slow down maturation, but mature biofilm communities may be more resistant to UV-C treatment.

Summary: Targeted therapy with BRAF inhibitor plus MEK inhibitor is now a possible treatment option for patients with BRAF mutation-positive melanoma. Prompt BRAF mutation testing is recommended for patients diagnosed with stage III or IV melanoma to ensure optimal systemic treatment initiation. Immunohistochemistry using the anti-BRAF V600E monoclonal antibody can be a sensitive means of detecting mutations, but DNA-based testing is still recommended due to limitations with current IHC antibodies.

Summary: This study evaluated the rate of sentinel node biopsy (SNB) in high-risk melanoma patients and identified factors associated with the procedure not being performed. The study found that although adherence to SNB guidelines has increased, the overall SNB rate remains low, with almost two-thirds of eligible cases not receiving the procedure in 2019. This study highlights the crucial need to improve access to SNB for melanoma surgery in the Queensland population.
