Summary: This study compared the short- and long-term outcomes of laparoscopic liver resections for bilobar colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) to single resections for CRLM. The results showed that in experienced hands, performing laparoscopic liver resections for bilobar CRLM can be done safely with similar oncologic outcomes as those who underwent single resections for CRLM.

Summary: The study found that parenchymal-sparing hepatectomy for CRLM patients, compared to non-parenchymal-sparing procedures, can reduce postoperative complications, shorten length of hospital stay, and provide equivalent oncologic outcomes, regardless of tumor burden.

Summary: Background: The advantages of parenchymal-sparing resection (PSR) over anatomic resection (AR) of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) remain controversial. Here, we aim to evaluate their safety and efficacy. Results: A systematic review and meta-analysis of short-term perioperative outcomes and long-term oncological outcomes for PSR and AR were performed. PSR had better perioperative outcomes without compromising oncological long-term outcomes. However, these findings must be carefully interpreted, requiring more supporting evidence.

Summary: RAS mutations are prognostic for mCRC patients. KRAS exon 3/4 mutations are rare and may be associated with a more favorable prognosis, but the difference in oncologic outcomes based on the mutated exon appears to be smaller than previously reported.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the surgical and oncologic safety of laparoscopic parenchyma-sparing liver resection for large colorectal metastases. The results showed satisfactory short and long-term outcomes for patients with large colorectal liver metastases, with no impact of tumor size on survival.

Summary: Liquid biopsies have gained attention in the field of oncologic surgery and can improve prognostication and monitor disease evolution. Although not currently standard of care, liquid biopsies have shown promising results in the treatment of CRLM patients.

Summary: Parenchyma-sparing surgery is the preferred approach for treating patients with deeply located lesions in the right liver lobe. This surgical method not only increases the possibility of liver re-resection for colorectal cancer metastatic lesions within the central liver, but also improves the overall survival rate and disease-free survival rate for patients.

Summary: Peritumoral early enhancement was found to be a predictor of liver recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) after non-anatomic resection (NAR) in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) based on the principle of parenchymal-sparing hepatectomy (PSH).

Summary: This study is the largest TSH series in the US and demonstrates evidence of safety and feasibility in the management of bilateral CRLM. Outcomes are influenced by margin status and operative estimated blood loss (EBL).

Summary: In this randomized trial comparing laparoscopic and open liver surgery for patients with colorectal liver metastases, there was no significant difference in survival outcomes between the two treatment groups. However, variability in 5-year overall survival rates by up to about 10 percentage points was observed.

Summary: Metastasis of colorectal cancer is closely related to changes in the human gut microbiome. Our study found that the composition of the gut microbiota changed with the occurrence of metastasis in colorectal cancer. Therefore, analysis of the gut microbiota may serve as a supplementary biological basis for the diagnosis and treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

Summary: The concept of cancer stem cells (CSCs) suggests a hierarchy within tumors where a minority of more primitive cells give rise to more differentiated cells that make up the tumor bulk, but are not capable of perpetuating tumors on their own. CSCs may drive therapeutic resistance and cancer progression, and their identification and isolation methods have been established. Single-cell omics technologies offer opportunities to discover novel molecular pathways for CRC eradication.

Summary: In the VHA system, factors such as race, marital status, and employment status are associated with pancreatic cancer resection, while geographic region and employment status are associated with survival after resection. However, factors like race, Hispanic ethnicity, marital status, and Social Deprivation Index are not independently associated with survival after resection. Further studies are needed to explore the basis for these inequities.

Summary: Gender, race, and ethnicity are independently associated with morbidity after pancreaticoduodenectomy for cancer; gender and race are independently associated with major morbidity; and ethnicity is independently associated with mortality. Further studies are warranted to determine the basis of these associations.
