Summary: The study evaluated smoking history and behavior changes in patients undergoing RYGB surgery over a 7-year period. The results showed that although most adults who smoked before surgery quit pre-surgery, smoking prevalence rebounded over 7 years primarily due to relapse. Risk factors for post-surgery smoking included smoking history, younger age, low household income, marital status, and illicit drug use.

Summary: This study found that sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in youth is associated with impaired bone health, which is related to changes in body composition, sex steroids, sclerostin, and enteric peptides.

Summary: This study analyzed the role of the guanylin system in changes in food preference after sleeve gastrectomy in obesity. The results showed that circulating concentrations of GUCA2B increased after sleeve gastrectomy and were negatively associated with fat preference. Furthermore, sleeve gastrectomy upregulated the expression of GUCA2A and GUCA2B in taste bud cells and downregulated the expression of the lingual lipid sensor CD36.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between vitamin D metabolites and components of the inflammasome machinery in obesity before and after bariatric surgery (BS), and their association with the improvement of metabolic comorbidities. The results showed that vitamin D treatment after surgery significantly reduced inflammation markers, fat mass, and body weight, and was associated with improvements in metabolic comorbidities.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD), finding that RYGB led to significant reductions in vBMD at all skeletal sites analyzed. The deterioration of vBMD was associated with time post-RYGB, except at the total hip. RYGB also had a significant negative effect on bone quality. The study suggests that using three-dimensional technology to screen for bone mass progression is crucial to prevent fracture risk and osteoporosis.

Summary: After metabolic bariatric surgery, changes in inflammatory markers and circulating proteins were observed, with some proteins correlating with alterations in IL6, TNF alpha, and CRP. Further studies are required to elucidate the mechanisms by which MBS reduces low-grade inflammation.

Summary: In this study, 107 patients with postsurgical portal vein thrombosis were retrospectively analyzed, revealing that the type of surgery, degree of thrombosis occlusion, and type of anticoagulant used significantly influenced the outcomes. Failure to achieve complete radiographic resolution of portal vein thrombosis was associated with a greater risk of developing clinical portal hypertension in the future.

Summary: The effects of bariatric surgery on lipid profile and lipoprotein characteristics in morbidly obese patients were analyzed. The surgery led to normalization of lipid levels and improved properties of lipoproteins. Compared to healthy subjects, obese patients showed multiple alterations in lipoprotein properties, which were mostly reversed by bariatric surgery.

Summary: Obesity and its associated diseases pose a significant health and economic burden globally, with limited options for effective pharmacological treatment. Bariatric surgery is currently the most effective therapeutic strategy, but future treatment strategies may involve targeting the gut-brain axis and incretins to identify potential drugs with weight-reducing potential.

Summary: Obesity-related hyperfiltration causes an increase in GFR and hyperalbuminuria, which can be reversed after bariatric surgery. Body weight and aldosterone are the main factors mediating changes in eGFR in obesity and bariatric surgery, while albuminuria is associated with glucose homeostasis.

Summary: This study retrospectively compared weight loss and comorbidity outcomes between patients who underwent bariatric surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic and those operated on prior to the pandemic. The study found that despite significant societal and individual stressors, similar weight loss outcomes were achieved by focusing on pre-operative dietary training and screening for psychological comorbidities.
