Summary: This study examined the postoperative risk profile of thyroidectomy patients on chronic steroids by comparing the clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and postoperative complications between patients with and without chronic steroid use. The study found that patients on chronic steroids had increased risk of postoperative bleeding and transfusions, open wound infection, pulmonary embolism, and ventilator use over 48 hours.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the incidence of postoperative pain and discomfort differs with the type of inhaled anesthetic used in thyroidectomy. The results showed that, except for dizziness on the day of surgery, no other manifestation of postoperative pain and discomfort was influenced by the type of inhaled anesthetic. Moreover, patients reported that sore throat caused the greatest discomfort from the day of surgery to the seventh day after surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the patients at risk of developing vocal cord palsy before thyroidectomy using machine learning methods. By analyzing the data of 1039 patients who underwent thyroidectomy at the Department of General Surgery of Karadeniz Technical University Medical Faculty Farabi Hospital between 2015 and 2018, a novel clinical risk prediction model with 100% accuracy was developed to predict vocal cord palsy.

Summary: This study reviewed over 160,000 patients who underwent thyroidectomy and found that most complications occurred before discharge. The common early complications within 7 days postoperative included pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, and cardiac arrest. Patients who underwent outpatient thyroidectomy had lower risk of complications.

Summary: This study compared the complications and treatment effects of conventional thyroidectomy and thyroid thermal ablation, and found that thyroid thermal ablation is superior to conventional thyroidectomy in terms of patient satisfaction, post-operative quality of life, and shorter hospital stay, but requires longer time to achieve volume reduction of benign thyroid nodules. The complication rates between the two groups were similar.

Summary: This case report describes a rare occurrence of new-onset benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) following Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty. The patient's symptoms resolved after one week without further intervention, highlighting the importance of considering BPPV as a potential complication in postoperative care.

Summary: While an increasing number of patients undergo lobectomy for low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer, completion thyroidectomy may be needed for some patients to receive radioactive iodine therapy. This study found that completion thyroidectomy requires a longer hospital stay compared to the initial operation. However, there were no differences in operating time, intraoperative blood loss, perioperative drop in calcium levels, and postoperative hospital stay between surgeries. Patients reported higher pain scores on the day of operation and the first postoperative day. Occult papillary microcarcinomas were identified in the contralateral thyroid lobe in 21% of patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the use of Esketamine could reduce opioid consumption and postoperative pain in patients undergoing thyroidectomy. The results showed that patients in the Esketamine group had lower opioid consumption, lower postoperative pain scores, and better sleep quality compared to the placebo group, with no significant differences in adverse events between the two groups.

Summary: Adequate pain control is important for patients' quality of life and recovery. However, current pain management practices may contribute to the opioid addiction crisis. This study summarizes evidence on locoregional interventions for reducing pain and discomfort after thyroidectomy, and finds that these interventions can significantly impact postoperative pain, potentially reduce opioid use, and improve patient outcomes.
