Background: Diabetes can lead to impaired wound healing and skin grafts used surgically for diabetic wounds are often complicated with necrosis, although different therapies have been proposed. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) participate in tissue repair processes and may have a role during impaired wound healing. In this study, autologous transplantation of ASCs was used to determine if it increases angiogenesis and skin graft survival and enhances wound healing in diabetic rats. Methods: Adipose-derived stem cells were successfully isolated and cultured. A full-thickness skin graft model was used to determine the effects of locally administered ASCs in 10 rats rendered diabetic (group 1), whereas 10 others served as controls (group 2). Histological examination of skin grafts followed after 1 week. Additionally, immunohistochemical staining intensity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-beta 3) was assessed in all grafts. Results: The gross and histological results showed significantly increased survival, angiogenesis, and epithelialization. Mean area of graft necrosis was significantly less in group 1 than in group 2 (7.49% vs 39.67%, P < 0.001). Statistically significant increase of capillary density, collagen intensity, VEGF, and TGF-beta 3 expression was noted in group 1 compared with group 2. Conclusions: These findings suggest that autologous ASC transplantation can enhance skin graft survival in diabetic rats through differentiation, vasculogenesis, and secretion of growth factors such as VEGF and TGF-beta 3. This might represent a novel therapeutic approach in skin graft surgery for diabetic wounds.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ceratonia siliqua on bone mineral density (BMD) as a nonpharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. The results showed that long-term administration of C. siliqua significantly increased BMD compared to the control group and the ovariectomized group after 3 and 6 months of intervention. Therefore, C. siliqua may be considered a non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

European Union Legislation for the Welfare of Animals Used for Scientific Purposes: Areas Identified for Further Discussion

Katerina A. Marinou, Ismene A. Dontas

Summary: The Directive 2010/63/EU has been in force for more than a decade, bringing significant improvements and novel requirements for animal welfare and research integrity in scientific experiments. The Directive provides clear provisions for various aspects such as scope, authorization procedures, animal welfare bodies, national committees, cost/benefit analysis, severity classification, retrospective assessment, and statistical reporting. The authors, based on their experience working in this field, have identified indicative areas in existing legislative texts and guidance documents that may impact animal welfare and scientific integrity. They discuss suggested solutions to address these areas through potential future revisions in legislation or other actions to benefit animal welfare, aiming to clarify and simplify these issues for all stakeholders involved.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate prognostic tools for predicting patient recovery after hip fractures and investigate the correlation between pre-fracture motor and functional statuses. The study included 80 patients with hip fractures and evaluated patient history, previous falls, fracture type, and overall survival. The results showed that patients' physical and functional statuses were correlated with their postoperative recovery.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a decellularization protocol for producing a completely acellular full-thickness abdominal wall scaffold. The results showed that the protocol successfully removed all cells from the abdominal wall samples and the resulting decellularized scaffolds had good biochemical and mechanical properties. This study provides a useful method for producing acellular abdominal wall scaffolds from larger animal models or human cadaveric donors.

Tuberculosis of the Spine in a Patient With Kidney Cancer

Irena Karabella, Efstathios Chronopoulos, George Panagiotakopoulos, Ismene A. Dontas

Summary: Tuberculosis is a commonly misdiagnosed infectious disease that can mimic bone tumors or metastatic lesions in the spine. In patients with cancer and signs of lymph node involvement and bone lesions, exploring other potential causes is crucial for diagnosis. This case study highlights the importance of maintaining a high level of suspicion, as a lytic lesion initially misdiagnosed as a metastatic lesion turned out to be renal cell carcinoma.
