Summary: Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare malignancy originating from the peritoneal lining. Cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy is the standard treatment for isolated peritoneal mesothelioma. This study aims to describe the treatment protocols and patient outcomes for peritoneal mesothelioma in Canada.

Summary: This study aimed to explore whether fragmenting surgical and systemic therapeutic care between different institutions affects the outcomes of patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for peritoneal metastases. The results showed that patients undergoing CRS at a high-volume center may safely receive systemic therapy at outside-network facilities with comparable survival rates and rates of serious adverse events.

Summary: Peritoneal carcinomatosis of gastric origin is still considered a terminal disease with poor outcomes due to limited treatment options. However, recent evidence suggests that cytoreductive surgery may improve survival in selected patients with gastric cancer. These procedures are complex and require high surgical expertise to prevent postoperative complications.

Summary: In rare cases, performing multiple CRS-HIPEC operations on appropriate surgical candidates can significantly prolong survival, especially for patients with appendix cancers. Most patients undergoing repeat CRS-HIPEC achieve satisfactory resection margins, and complication rates are comparable to the first operation.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the outcomes and overall survival in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery and heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. The study found that lymph node status, PCI, and CC score were independent prognostic factors that affected patient survival.

Summary: Through an international consensus, it was confirmed that hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) following complete cytoreductive surgery (CRS) is the first-line treatment for diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM), and the combination of cisplatin and doxorubicin is recommended as the preferred HIPEC regimen.

Summary: In patients with mucinous appendiceal adenocarcinoma, a secondary cytoreductive surgery may be considered if cancer progression is documented after surgery. Statistically analyzing the variables, it is found that patients who undergo a secondary cytoreductive surgery within 24 months after the initial surgery have a higher mortality rate.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the learning curve of L-CRS + HIPEC and its impact on perioperative outcomes. The learning curve was divided into a learning phase and a consolidation phase, which could be achieved after 14 procedures. There was a significant decrease in operative time with no differences in complexity, number of procedures, or morbidity.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of HIPEC in improving peritoneal recurrence rates in PM of different origins. Results showed good effectiveness of HIPEC in gastric PM, but limited utility in ovarian and colorectal PM. Findings were limited by a lack of data, lack of homogeneity, and consideration of novel and personalized treatment regimens.

Summary: This review analyzed the effect of treatment modalities on response rates, side effects, morbidity and mortality, and survival in patients with peritoneal mesothelioma (PM). Comprehensive treatment including cytoreductive surgery (CRS) + perioperative chemotherapy (POC) showed longer median survival time and higher 10-year survival rates compared to systemic chemotherapy alone, though postoperative morbidity and mortality rates were higher. Therefore, specialized peritoneal surface malignancy centers are recommended for CRS + POC.

Summary: This study analyzed MCPM patients treated with CRS from the French RENAPE database between 1999 and 2019. The study found that HIPEC after complete surgery can reduce the risk of recurrence, but the difference was not statistically significant. Twenty-two percent of patients experienced severe post-operative adverse events, leading to reoperation. The majority of patients with a desire for childbearing were successful after laparoscopic-CRS-HIPEC surgery.

Summary: Primary peritoneal mesothelioma (PPM) is a rare and aggressive tumor that arises from the peritoneum. This study investigated the factors affecting patient prognosis and survival in PPM. The majority of PPM patients were male and Caucasian, and the prognosis was worse for patients with poorly differentiated tumors, tumor size > 4 cm, Caucasian race, and distant spread of disease.

Summary: The completeness of cytoreduction has consistently been the most important prognostic indicator in the management of peritoneal metastases in patients with colorectal cancer. Other clinical and histologic features may also impact survival. In patients with complete cytoreduction, lymph node positivity, poorly differentiated histopathology, asymptomatic status following treatment with systemic chemotherapy, incomplete response to systemic chemotherapy, and moderate to high peritoneal cancer index significantly reduce survival. However, these prognostic variables have no statistical significance in patients with incomplete cytoreduction.

Summary: This article discusses the protective measures implemented at IC-HCL during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in France and their impact on clinical activities. The study found that there was no significant decline in the number of treatments conducted at IC-HCL, except for clinical trials and certain surgical activities. Additionally, the age and stage of cancer patients were found to be correlated with severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Summary: Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) is a new surgical technique for treating unresectable peritoneal carcinomatosis. This study estimated the mean cost of hospitalization for PIPAC in two French public teaching hospitals. The results showed that each PIPAC hospitalization cost the hospital an average of 2531 euros, while the fixed-rate remuneration was only 4031 euros.

Summary: In this study, the efficacy of BromAc as a mucolytic agent was tested on two gelatinous sputa models. The results showed that BromAc improved the viscosity and flow of the sputum, and had a greater effect compared to individual agents. Therefore, BromAc may be used as an effective mucolytic for clearing airway congestion caused by thick mucinous secretions.
