Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the optimal intervention strategy to prevent gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and restrict gestational weight gain (GWG) among overweight/obese pregnant women. The results showed that PA and diet + PA interventions had a trend of preventing GDM, and interventions of diet, PA, and diet + PA were significant factors to restrict GWG. Overall, a combination of diet and physical activity intervention seemed to be the superior choice for both GDM prevention and excessive GWG.

Summary: This study evaluated the associations between dietary changes and risk factors of type 2 diabetes in older populations in Sharpeville, South Africa. The results showed that women had significantly higher BMI levels compared to men, and waist circumference significantly decreased. Furthermore, intakes of total energy, fatty acids, and cholesterol were positively associated with BMI and waist circumference, while fatty acid intake was negatively associated with HOMA-IR and HOMA-B.

Summary: Weight change is associated with the risk of metabolic abnormalities. Long-term excessive weight gain is positively associated with an increased risk of metabolic abnormalities in non-overweight/obese individuals, while long-term weight loss is a protective factor for metabolic health in overweight/obese individuals.

Summary: A 36-month weight management programme in Ningbo, China showed that participants achieved significant initial weight loss at 3 months and maintained the weight loss during 33-month follow-ups. At 36 months, a certain percentage of participants achieved 5%, 10%, and 15% weight loss. The programme is suggested to benefit overweight and obese adults in reducing body weight and maintaining long-term weight loss.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the difference in weight progression and adherence to the recommended gestational weight gain targets between women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and women with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). The results showed that women with GDM gained less weight throughout pregnancy compared to women with NGT, and this difference was larger after OGTT. GDM individuals had a significantly higher proportion of insufficient weight gain and a lower proportion of excessive weight gain compared to NGT individuals.

Summary: This cross-sectional study found that individuals who underwent bariatric surgery had improved physical activity and eating behaviors compared to those eligible for surgery, but the improvements were still suboptimal. Efforts are needed to incorporate physical activity and a healthy diet into postbariatric care.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the dose-response relationship between increased total gestational weight gain (GWG) and the risk of neonatal birthweight in Chinese women with excess weight/obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The findings showed that women who exceeded the recommended weight gain range had a higher risk of advanced maternal age and macrosomia. Therefore, further research is urgently needed to provide appropriate weight gain recommendations for women with excess weight/obesity and GDM to support maternal and newborn health.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between the onset-age of overweight/obesity and the risk of developing diabetes mellitus in China. The study found that individuals who experienced early onset of excessive weight gain were at a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus compared to those who maintained a normal weight.

Summary: A meta-analysis showed that fried-food consumption is associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity and hypertension in adults, but not with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, caution is needed in interpreting the findings due to high heterogeneity and unstable subgroup analyses. More studies are necessary to investigate the overall fried-food consumption and these health outcomes.

Summary: It remains uncertain whether individuals with overweight or obesity can lose weight and improve cardiometabolic risk factors over time in real-world settings. This study used data from 11 large health systems in the U.S. to investigate the management and degree of body weight change over 2 years among adults with BMI >= 25 kg/m2. The findings showed that the majority of individuals maintained stable weight, weight loss pharmacotherapy was under-utilized, and small improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors were not sustained.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether a temporal change in body mass index (BMI) was associated with clinical outcomes independent of baseline BMI in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD). The results showed that weight gain and weight loss were associated with worsening of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk and an increase in cardiovascular events. These findings support lifestyle interventions aimed at weight maintenance in patients with normal weight and weight loss in overweight or obese patients.

Summary: In this study comparing one-step screening with two-step screening for gestational diabetes mellitus, the one-step approach resulted in more diagnoses of gestational diabetes mellitus but did not have a significant impact on the incidence of adverse perinatal and maternal outcomes.

Summary: With the global prevalence of obesity increasing dramatically, it has become a serious public health threat associated with comorbid conditions and psychological disorders. While lifestyle interventions and dietary adjustments may help with weight loss, maintaining these changes long-term can be challenging. Spices like turmeric, ginger, and pepper have shown promise in obesity management, with curcumin in particular gaining interest for its health benefits. Studies have shown potential favorable effects of curcumin supplementation on anthropometric indices, warranting further investigation for overweight or obese adults.

Summary: The Isfahan Thyroid Cohort Study (ITCS) in Iran is one of the few population-based epidemiological studies that investigates the prevalence and incidence of thyroid disorders. The study found significant associations between thyroid function abnormalities and goiter, with subclinical hypothyroidism having the highest prevalence. The third phase of the ITCS will focus on studying the associations between thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels and environmental factors such as infection.
