Summary: This study compared health care resource utilization between Medicare beneficiaries with and without Parkinson's disease over a 10-year period, finding that beneficiaries with PD had higher rates of inpatient admissions, emergency department visits, skilled nursing facility admissions, healthcare provider encounters, neurologist visits, rehabilitation service visits, and non-PD medication fills compared to those without PD. The results provide evidence for the allocation of healthcare resources for PD management.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of incomplete home health referrals after acute care hospitalization and found that complete referrals were associated with lower mortality and readmission rates as well as higher spending. As policymakers implement alternative policies and payment models, they should consider the tradeoff between quality and cost in increasing home health care utilization.

Summary: It is important to understand how people with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the US utilize the healthcare system. A study analyzed the healthcare utilization patterns of PD patients enrolled in Medicare in 2019 and found significant disparities in care. Many patients did not see a neurologist or receive recommended therapy services, indicating the need for further research on barriers to accessing PD-related health care.

Summary: This study found that only a small proportion of elderly patients received liver-directed therapies (LDT) for colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM). Patient factors associated with lower odds of receiving LDT included older age, female sex, Black race, greater comorbidity burden, higher social vulnerability index, primary rectal cancer, synchronous liver metastasis, and further distance from a high-volume liver surgery center.

Summary: The study found that Black and Hispanic patients had lower odds of receiving colonoscopy compared to non-Hispanic Whites, and Whites with Medicaid coverage had lower odds of receiving colonoscopy compared to Whites without Medicaid coverage. Hispanics in high-income neighborhoods also had lower odds of receiving colonoscopy.

Summary: The study found that over one-third of patients with pancreatic cancer were admitted to the ICU, with majority surviving hospitalization but over half dying within 6 months of discharge. Among those who had subsequent ICU admissions, the 1- and 5-year survival rates were only 31.8% and 11.0%, respectively.

Summary: Recent research has raised concerns about health care segregation, the concentration of racial groups in a subset of hospitals, as a key contributor to persistent disparities in surgical care. However, the extent and effect of hospital-level segregation among patients undergoing lung cancer resection remains unclear.

Summary: This study aimed to determine differences in eye care utilization based on frailty levels among Medicare beneficiaries with glaucoma. The findings showed that patients with moderate-to-severe frailty had lower rates of eye care utilization in outpatient settings and higher rates in acute care settings. This suggests that frail patients may receive less disease monitoring and fewer interventions for their glaucoma management.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 2017 Medicare beneficiary and their family and unpaid caregivers surveys to describe characteristics and assess the prevalence of adequate transitional care training among family caregivers for older adults. Among caregivers who assisted with posthospitalization care transitions, Black caregivers and those experiencing financial difficulty were less likely to receive adequate training. Strategies such as standardized caregiver assessments may be needed to ensure equitable support of family caregivers during the discharge process.

Summary: More than 1 in 4 patients undergoing hepatopancreatic surgery presented to the emergency department within 30 days of discharge, with most patients returning within the first week post-discharge, and a subset of patients having multiple ED visits. Efforts should target those most likely to be high ED utilizers to prevent early post-discharge ED visits.

Summary: Although survival rates for in-hospital cardiac arrest have improved over the past two decades, recent years have seen a plateau in these rates. This study analyzed data from 170 hospitals to determine the incidence of IHCA among Medicare beneficiaries, finding significant variation in incidence rates across hospitals. Hospitals with higher nurse staffing and teaching status were associated with lower IHCA incidence rates, indicating the importance of these factors in cardiac arrest prevention.

Summary: This study investigated adherence with a physical activity tracker and activity patterns among African American/Black breast cancer survivors. It found that certain subgroups such as those over 60, retired, with high BMI or comorbidities, and more household members had lower activity levels, indicating the need for additional interventions.
