Anemia represents a global health problem that negatively impacts quality of life in elderly population; however, its impact on the geriatric syndrome of frailty is unclear. We examined the prevalence of anemia among elderly and sought a relationship between hemoglobin and the phenotype of frailty. Baseline hemoglobin quintiles and anemia were assessed in relation to frailty status in a prospective study with 1,933 older community-dwelling adults enrolled in the Study on Aging and Dementia in Mexico (SADEM). Logistic regression was used to model the relationship between frailty and Hb, adjusting for risk factors of frailty, sociodemographic data, cognitive decline, chronic diseases, and some risky habits. Prevalence of frailty was 8.3 %. Frailty risk was highest at the lowest hemoglobin quintile (< 14.3 g/dL for men; < 13.3 g/dL for women), and 160 (8.3 %) were anemic (< 13 g/dL for men; < 12 g/dL for women). The relationship between frailty and Hb levels, adjusted for age and sex, observed in the first and fifth quintiles, compared with the fourth quintile, were 1.53 (95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.46-1.60) and 1.05 (95 % CI, 1.01-1.15). After multivariate adjustment, the odds ratios (ORs) were 1.23 (95 % CI, 1.17-1.13) and 1.06 (95 % CI, 1.01-1.11). The association was not diminished by risk factors for frailty (body mass index (BMI), comorbidity, cognitive decline, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc.). In community-dwelling older adults, low hemoglobin concentrations and anemia were independently associated with increased frailty risk. This suggests that mild anemia and low Hb levels are independent, modifiable risk factors for frailty.

Increase of 5-HT levels is induced both in mouse brain and HEK-293 cells following their exposure to a non-viral tryptophan hydroxylase construct

Emiliano Tesoro-Cruz, Leticia Manuel-Apolinar, Norma Oviedo, Sandra Orozco-Suarez, Minerva Crespo Ramirez, Vilma Carolina Bekker-Mendez, M. Magdalena Aguirre-Garcia, Sandra Angelica Rojas-Osornio, Vladimir Paredes-Cervantes, Miguel Perez de la Mora

Summary: Tryptophan hydroxylase type 2 (Tph2) is crucial in serotonin (5-HT) biosynthesis, and its dysfunction may lead to 5-HT deficiency. Research has linked polymorphisms of the TPH2 gene to suicidal behavior, while 5-HT deficiency has been associated with various psychiatric pathologies. Therefore, further studies are needed to explore the potential application of TPH2 gene in psychiatric diseases involving Tph2 dysfunction or serotonin deficiency.

Summary: This study identified associations between various adipokines, myokines, osteokines, hepatokines, and inflammatory cytokines with body size phenotype, BMI, VAT, and HOMA-IR in middle-aged women. Elevation of OCN and reduction of adiponectin were associated with a metabolic unhealthy phenotype in normal weight women, while higher irisin and MCP-1 were risk factors for a metabolic unhealthy phenotype in women with obesity. OCN, adiponectin, irisin, FGF-21, and MCP-1 could potentially serve as biomarkers for an unhealthy metabolic phenotype in middle-aged women.

Summary: Incomptines A and B are sesquiterpene lactones with various biological activities. IB showed stronger antibacterial activity against Vibrio cholerae compared to IA, while IA had a more significant impact on the action of cholera toxin. IA also exhibited higher anti-diarrheal activity than IB and the positive control racercadotril.

Short-term administration of tibolone reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in the hippocampus of ovariectomized rats fed high-fat and high-fructose

Summary: Inflammation and oxidative stress play important roles in neurodegeneration. High-calorie diets, menopause, and aging can increase the risk of neurodegeneration. Hormone replacement therapy can alleviate menopause symptoms, and short-term administration of the synthetic hormone Tibolone can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation caused by a high-fat and fructose diet.

Dysfunctional Heteroreceptor Complexes as Novel Targets for the Treatment of Major Depressive and Anxiety Disorders

Miguel Perez de la Mora, Dasiel O. Borroto-Escuela, Minerva Crespo-Ramirez, Jose del Carmen Rejon-Orantes, Daniel Alejandro Palacios-Lagunas, Magda K. Martinez-Mata, Daniela Sanchez-Luna, Emiliano Tesoro-Cruz, Kjell Fuxe

Summary: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety are highly prevalent mental diseases with negative impacts on society and patients. Finding effective treatments with limited side effects is an important goal. This review focuses on the role of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs), such as serotonin, dopamine, galanin, and opioid heteroreceptor complexes, in regulating synaptic transmission in the limbic networks of the brain, and how understanding these mechanisms can contribute to the development of new treatments for MDD and anxiety disorders.

Summary: This study estimates the prevalence and types of dementia among elderly people living in the community in Mexico City. The findings indicate a relatively high prevalence of dementia in Mexico, especially Alzheimer's disease. The prevalence of dementia is higher in women than in men. These results provide evidence for the development of early diagnosis and care strategies in the region.

Multifactor Dimensionality Reduction Analysis to Evaluate the Association of Dopamine Beta-Hydroxylase (DΒH) Polymorphisms with Susceptibility to Dementia (SADEM Study)

Teresa Juarez-Cedillo, Nancy Martinez-Rodriguez, Jose Manuel Fragoso, Valentin Islas-Perez, Amara Lopez-Martinez, Antonio Valle-Medina

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH) gene (rs1611115) and their interactions with environmental factors and the risk of dementia. The interaction and impact of DBH (rs1611115) polymorphism on dementia were examined using multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) analysis, and the results were verified by the Chi-square test. The results showed that the TT genotype of the DBH1 locus rs1611115 TT was positively correlated with diabetes, hypertension, and alcohol consumption, leading to further cognitive damage.

Advances in the Properties of Incomptine A: Cytotoxic Activity and Downregulation of Hexokinase II in Breast Cancer Cell Lines

Angel Giovanni Arietta-Garcia, Fernando Calzada, Israel Ramirez-Sanchez, Elihu Bautista, Normand Garcia-Hernandez, Rosa Maria Ordonez-Razo

Summary: This study found that Incomptine A (IA) exhibits cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cells of triple negative, HER2+, and luminal A subtypes. IA shows higher cytotoxic activity in cancer cells compared to non-tumorigenic cells, with a selectivity index higher than doxorubicin. It is suggested that IA could reactivate apoptosis in breast cancer cells by binding to Hexokinase II (HKII) and reducing its expression, making it a potential therapeutic agent for breast cancer treatment across multiple subtypes.
