Summary: The annual rabies vaccination coverage in dogs in Japan is declining and likely to be lower than reported. A survey of dog owners identified factors associated with dog rabies vaccination, including owner education level, knowledge about mandatory vaccination, access to veterinary services, and vaccination advice from veterinarians. Improving owners' knowledge, facilitating attachment to veterinary clinics, and providing vaccination advice may increase dog rabies vaccination uptake.

Summary: This study identified the important traits for dogs trained in biosecurity detection, and found seven relevant traits: search motivation, emotional stability, search arousal, food motivation, play motivation, search independence, and search focus. Current biosecurity detector dogs had consistently high ratings in search motivation, emotional stability, and food motivation, and dogs rated highly in search arousal and search motivation also performed well in overall detection.

Summary: The study confirmed the ability of Can f 5 to cross-react with human PSA, with 52.3% of women allergic to Can f 5 in the studied population. Allergy to male semen does not constitute a typical clinical presentation of Can f 5 allergy.

Summary: Investigations of therapy dog welfare have primarily focused on physiological and behavioral measures, but have not fully considered the continuum of welfare. This review proposes using objective measurements of the HPA axis and behavioral observations to evaluate positive welfare in therapy dogs. The role of oxytocin and questionnaire data are also discussed. However, to date, no studies have comprehensively measured these factors to assess therapy dog welfare.

Summary: This study reports novel single nucleotide polymorphisms in the PRNP gene of raccoon dogs and identifies high homology between the PrP of raccoon dogs and dogs, which are prion-resistant animals. Raccoon dog PrP-specific amino acids are related to low amyloid propensity and inherent characteristics of raccoon dog PrP's 3D structure compared to prion-susceptible species.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between indoor microbial and allergen levels and indoor and outdoor household environmental characteristics. The results showed that dog ownership, air purifier use, and floor cleaning frequency were major predictors of indoor microbial and allergen levels. Proximity to parks, roads, and forests was also associated with elevated levels of indoor microorganisms and allergens.

Summary: Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a pruritic allergic skin disease associated with IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. The present study used Serum Allergen-Specific IgE test (SAT) to identify relevant environmental allergens in atopic dogs living in Northern Italy, primarily house dust mites, Rumex acetosa pollen, and grasses. Specific panels for geographical areas should be considered and re-evaluated at time intervals.

Summary: Many dogs left alone at home show symptoms of separation anxiety, but little is known about the effects of familiar conspecifics in multi-dog households. This study found that male dogs in multi-dog households tend to exhibit higher vocal activity, while dogs in multi-dog households show higher overall activity levels.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the population-based incidence and characteristics of facial and ophthalmic injuries from domestic mammal bites in Olmsted County, Minnesota. The overall age- and sex-adjusted incidence of facial injuries was 9.0 per 100,000 persons per year, with ocular injuries accounting for 1.7 cases and non-ophthalmic injuries accounting for 7.3 cases per 100,000 persons per year. The majority of facial injuries were caused by dog bites, and patients with ophthalmic injuries had different treatment approaches and higher hospital admission rates compared to those with non-ophthalmic injuries.

Summary: Free-ranging dogs (FRDs), the largest population of dogs worldwide, have become a conflict in the Global South due to urbanization and poor population management. This study investigates the behavior and human-animal bonds of adopted FRDs in India, revealing that FRDs can adapt to domestic life and make good pets.

Summary: This study reviewed seven cases of canine and feline extramedullary plasmacytoma, mostly found in the conjunctiva of the third eyelid and successfully treated with surgical excision. No signs of recurrence or systemic involvement were observed, suggesting that local surgical excision alone or combined with cryotherapy is curative.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the composition and structure of gastrointestinal mucus in dogs. It was found that mucus mainly consists of water and maintained a pH around 6.5. The protein composition of mucus differed between the stomach and intestines, while lipid and metabolite abundance was higher in the jejunal mucus. Microscopic analysis showed smaller pore size in small intestinal mucus compared to the large intestine. Overall, mucus is a highly viscous and hydrated material.

Summary: Supplementation of Lactobacillus to maternal mice resulted in reduced airway mucus and Th2 cell-mediated response in their offspring following RSV infection. Maternal supplementation led to consistent gut microbiome in mothers and their offspring, and decreased inflammatory metabolites in maternal plasma, breastmilk, and offspring plasma. Prenatal and postnatal exposure to Lactobacillus showed significant impact on immune response in neonates.
