The effect of a natural feed additive (Macleaya cordata), containing sanguinarine, on the performance and health status of weaning pigs

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of Sangrovit((R)), a plant-derived feed additive, given throughout the nursery stage via feed at 15ppm and 50ppm, on the health status and performance of weaners against negative controls. In a 900-sow farrow-to-finish farm, a total of 864 piglets were divided into three groups: (i) negative controls (NC); (ii) Sang 15: same feed as NCs, plus 15g Sangrovit((R)) /t of feed; (iii) Sang 50: same feed as NCs plus 50g Sangrovit((R)) /t of feed. The results indicated that administration of 50ppm(-)Sangrovit((R)) had the most beneficial effects on growth performance in weaning pigs. Specifically there was increase of body weight and average daily gain, as well as reduction of feed conversion ratio. Blood analysis from the Sang groups and especially the Sang 50 group revealed low values of haptoglobin and serum amyloid A.

This study tested the synbiotic PoultryStar((R)) sol on broiler flocks and found that it improved gut health, body weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, and liveability.

Evaluation of Intradermal PRRSV MLV Vaccination of Suckling Piglets on Health and Performance Parameters under Field Conditions

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of intradermal and intramuscular administration of a PRRSV-1 MLV vaccine on the health and performance of piglets. The results showed that intradermal vaccination with the PRRSV-1 MLV vaccine had a positive impact on piglets' health and performance, including improved body weight, lower lung and pleurisy lesions scores, and decreased mortality rate.

Feeding Flaxseed and Lupins during the Transition Period in Dairy Cows: Effects on Production Performance, Fertility and Biochemical Blood Indices

Summary: This study investigated the effects of partially replacing soybean meal with a mixture of flaxseed and lupins on milk production and fertility parameters in dairy cows during the transition period. The results showed that the dietary treatment had no significant effect on milk yield or composition. However, cows fed with flaxseed and lupin seeds exhibited earlier postpartum estrus and conception compared to the control group. These findings suggest that the substitution of soybean meal with flaxseed and lupin is a profitable feed modification that improves overall fertility in dairy cows.

Natural Co-Exposure to Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and Anaplasma phagocytophilum: Unraveling the Hematological Profile in Sheep

Summary: The occurrence of co-infected hosts and questing ticks with multiple tick-borne pathogens is expected in endemic regions. Limited data exist on the clinicopathological alterations in co-infected sheep. This study investigated the impact of A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi s.l. seropositivity, alone and in combination, on the hematological parameters of naturally infected sheep. Co-exposure to A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi s.l. resulted in the most severe blood abnormalities and enhanced the pathogenic processes. More studies are needed to clarify the possible background mechanisms.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of intramuscular administration of dexamethasone alone or in combination with vitamin E/Se on LBW piglets. The results showed that administering dexamethasone and vitamin E/Se together for 1-3 days after birth can enhance the growth and survival scores of LBW piglets.

Comparative Evaluation between Visual and Automated Dipstick Urinalyses in Dogs

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare visual and automated evaluations of dipstick variables in canine urine samples. Automated analysis of urine dipsticks has improved accuracy and precision. However, comparing the two methods, correlation for urine specific gravity was poor and agreement varied for different variables. Visual and automated dipstick urinalyses should not be used interchangeably, and multiple urine samples from the same dog should be evaluated using the same method for accurate results.

Summary: Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a common nutritional disorder in the dairy and beef industries, causing significant financial losses. This study evaluates the effectiveness of computerized rumen colorimetry in detecting SARA in beef cattle. The results show a positive correlation between rumen pH and color components, suggesting computerized rumen colorimetry as a reliable method for managing SARA in bovine farms.

Summary: This study investigated pathological lung lesions in piglets born to gilts vaccinated with PRRSV-1 MLV. The piglets born to gilts vaccinated with the Vac-2 vaccine strain exhibited moderate to severe interstitial pneumonia and type II pneumocyte hyperplasia, while other vaccine groups showed no notable lung lesions.

Histopathological lesions ofActinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 8 in infected pigs

Summary: This study reported the histopathological lesions caused by an outbreak of acute Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae serotype 8 infections in two farms in Cyprus for the first time. The macroscopic lesions included fibrotic, hemorrhagic, and necrotizing pneumonia with abscesses and pleuritis. Histopathological evaluation revealed fibrous exudate, areas of necrosis, and degenerated bronchial and bronchiolar epithelia. The A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 8 cases were accompanied by acute illness, death, and pronounced bronchitis and bronchiolitis.

Evaluation of porcine circovirus type 2 double vaccination in weaning piglets that reared for gilts under field conditions

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a double PCV2 vaccination in weaning piglets reared for gilts under field conditions. The study was conducted at a Greek pig farm with a previous history of PCV2 infections. The results indicated that the double-vaccinated piglets had better growth performance and a stronger humoral response against PCV2 compared to the single-vaccinated piglets. These findings suggest that a double PCV2 vaccination could provide higher protection against the virus for piglets reared on PCV2-affected farms.
