The Iberian lynx Lynx pardinus has suffered a dramatic reduction in its range throughout the Iberian Peninsula and at present is one of the most endangered mammals in the world. The latest studies report that, out of the 48 breeding areas that existed in 1990, only two populations are left in southern Spain. As a consequence, some of the formerly largest populations, such as Montes de Toledo (central Spain), are to all intents and purposes regarded as extinct. To determine the current distribution of Iberian lynx outside the two recognized populations, we surveyed five different areas where the species is considered extinct and collected 581 faeces for the genetic identification of the species. We identified 18 samples as belonging to Iberian lynx in four out of the five areas studied, providing clear evidence for the presence of lynx in central Spain. In some areas the species was detected repeatedly at different localities and on different dates, indicating a regular occurrence of an unknown number of individuals. The conservation implications of these results are discussed in terms of the genetic importance of the individuals found and future reintroductions of the species from an ongoing captive-breeding programme.

Current landscape attributes and landscape stability in breeding grounds explain genetic differentiation in a long-distance migratory bird

J. Garcia, A. Moran-Ordonez, J. T. Garcia, M. Calero-Riestra, F. Alda, J. Sanz, S. Suarez-Seoane

Summary: Studies have shown that landscape resistance plays a more significant role than geographic distance in driving genetic differentiation in Iberian bluethroat populations. The highest gene flow and population connectivity were found in areas with stable vegetation and low annual precipitation, highlighting the importance of landscape stability for the conservation of this migratory bird species.

Genetic differentiation among populations of the blackfin goodea Goodea atripinnis (Cyprinodontiformes: Goodeidae): implications for its evolutionary history

Rosa Gabriela Beltran-Lopez, Omar Dominguez-Dominguez, Kyle R. Piller, Humberto Mejia-Mojica, Adan Fernando Mar-Silva, Ignacio Doadrio

Summary: This study analyzes the genetic characteristics and phylogeographic relationships of Goodea, a widely distributed and environmentally tolerant genus of goodeids. The research reveals low genetic differentiation and shared haplotypes in some regions, as well as geographic segregation and isolated groups. Additionally, Bayesian Skyline Plot analysis indicates recent population expansion in certain regions for Goodea atripinnis.

Comparing Ultraconserved Elements and Exons for Phylogenomic Analyses ofMiddle American Cichlids: When Data Agree to Disagree

Summary: Choosing among different types of genomic markers in phylogenomic studies can significantly affect the cost, design, and results of a study. Few studies have compared categories of next-generation sequence markers, limiting our ability to assess the suitability of different genomic fragment types. Despite differences in informativeness and gene tree discordance levels between different genomic markers, phylogenomic hypotheses generally agree on most relationships, with areas of disagreement typically attributed to incomplete lineage sorting and nonphylogenetic signals.

Evolutionary history of the Aztec shiner Aztecula sallaei (Gunther, 1868) (Teleostei: Cyprinidae): An endemic and monotypic species of Mexico

Summary: This study evaluated the evolutionary history of Aztec shiner in central Mexico, finding three genetically divergent lineages, with one widely distributed in different biogeographic regions dating back to the Pleistocene period. The results suggest that tecto-volcanic activity has shaped the geographic ranges, diversification, and phylogeographic patterns of freshwater fishes in the highlands of central Mexico.

Summary: The macroevolutionary consequences of evolving in the deep-sea are not well understood. This study aims to clarify the evolutionary history of Lophiiformes using phylogenomic inference methods. The results provide insight into the evolutionary relationships within the Lophiiformes and propose new families based on molecular and morphological evidence.

Quaternary geomorphological and climatic changes associated with the diversification of Iberian freshwater fishes: The case of the genus Cobitis (Cypriniformes, Cobitidae)

Andrea Corral-Lou, Silvia Perea, Anabel Perdices, Ignacio Doadrio

Summary: This study analyzed the population genetic structure of the endangered freshwater fish species Cobitis vettonica in the Iberian Peninsula and explored its relationship with its sister species Cobitis paludica. The results highlight the role of hydrogeomorphological processes and climatic changes in shaping the population structure of C. vettonica and its relationship with C. paludica. The study also identified the threat faced by C. vettonica populations due to low genetic diversity and genetic introgression with C. paludica.

Genetic footprints of a rapid and large-scale range expansion: the case of cyclic common vole in Spain

Julio C. Dominguez, Fernando Alda, Maria Calero-Riestra, Pedro P. Olea, Jesus Martinez-Padilla, Jesus Herranz, Juan Jose Onate, Ana Santamaria, Javier Vinuela, Jesus T. Garcia

Summary: In the Anthropocene, species are changing their ranges due to human-driven habitat modifications. Studying the genetic signatures of range shifts helps us understand how species adapt to environmental disturbances and predict future shifts in response to global environmental change. This study examined the genetic diversity and structure of the Iberian common vole Microtus arvalis asturianus during a wide-range expansion, revealing a genetic footprint consistent with true range expansion rather than colonization from within. Natural landscape features and anthropogenic barriers influenced the colonization pathways used by voles.

Summary: Hyphessobrycon is a diverse genus in the Characidae family, with over 160 species distributed from Mexico to Argentina. This study used ultraconserved elements (UCEs) to infer the phylogeny of trans-Andean Hyphessobrycon, including H. compressus. The results support the monophyly of trans-Andean Hyphessobrycon and reveal cryptic diversity within H. compressus and H. condotensis.
