Summary: Both low and extremely high HDL-C concentrations are associated with high blood pressure. The former association might be dependent on excess fat mass concomitant with low HDL-C, whereas the latter association may be largely dependent on frequent alcohol consumption.

Summary: The function of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is more important than the HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) level in predicting the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). A study on patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) found that serum cholesterol uptake capacity (CUC) levels were significantly lower in patients with CAD compared to those without CAD. The study also showed that CUC levels were negatively correlated with the carotid plaque score and were independently associated with CAD, while HDL-C was not.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between serum lipids and pterygium in a large-scale rural population in Southern China aged 40 years or older. The study found that increased levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) were positively associated with the risk of pterygium. This association was stronger in participants aged 40-49 years and those with a normal body mass index (BMI).

Summary: Novel hematological parameters derived from high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) were rarely studied as indicators for the risk of poor outcomes in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Lower HDL-C concentrations and higher neutrophil to HDL-C ratio (NHR) at admission were significantly associated with a poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients and diabetes subgroup.

Summary: Cholesterol plays a crucial role in maintaining the proper functioning of animal cells. Abnormal metabolism of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) may affect female fertility. HDL in follicular fluid (FF) can uptake excess unesterified cholesterol (UC) from cumulus cells, and the accumulation of UC may impair the developmental capacity of the egg. Cholesterol accumulation can affect cell viability and the activity of membrane proteins, potentially through the activation of calcium channels and dysregulation of cell death/survival signaling pathways. Evaluating cholesterol and lipid levels is important for the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.

Summary: This study found that the serum total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL-C) is associated with mortality in peritoneal dialysis patients. Patients with higher TC/HDL-C had higher body mass index, diabetes prevalence, and serum albumin level. However, individual levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were not associated with mortality.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between MPV/PC and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The results showed that low MPV/PC level was an independent risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in PD patients aged less than 60 years.

Summary: This systematic review examines the associations between perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and lipid concentrations in human populations. The results suggest that PFAS exposure is associated with higher levels of LDL, HDL, and TC, while the association with TG tends to be negative. Additionally, the study indicates a positive relationship between PFAS concentrations and cholesterol-related health outcomes. Further research is needed to investigate the effects of less-studied PFAS on human health.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) and their metabolites in urine with serum lipid profiles in adults. The results showed a significant positive correlation between N-desmethyl-acetamiprid and total cholesterol (TC) levels, especially in participants aged over 46 years. Body mass index (BMI) also modified the association between N-desmethyl-acetamiprid and LDL-C and Apo-B levels.

Summary: Breast cancer is a major cause of female mortality, with recent studies focusing on the role of lipoproteins, cholesterol metabolism alterations, and oxidative stress in the molecular mechanism of the disease. Low levels of HDL-C have been suggested as a risk factor for breast cancer, but conflicting results have been reported. Alterations in enzyme activity associated with HDL and higher levels of lipid peroxidation markers in breast cancer patients suggest dysfunctional HDL may play a role in the disease.

Summary: In this study, a series of berberine analogs were synthesized and evaluated for their lipid-lowering activities. Compound 1m was found to exhibit potent cholesterol inhibitory activity and had significant effects on LDLC and HDLC levels. The results suggest that 1m has the potential to be a new lipid-lowering agent.

Summary: The study revealed that the frontal plane QRS-T angle was significantly higher in patients with prehypertension (PHT) compared to normotensive individuals, and was similar between PHT and hypertension (HT) groups. The angle was found to be significantly correlated with various physiological parameters and could serve as predictors for higher systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, etc.
