High-intensity resistance training increases muscle size, but reduces arterial compliance. Muscular blood flow reduction (BFR) during low-intensity training has been shown to elicit muscle hypertrophy. However, the effect on arterial compliance is unknown. We examined the effects of walk training with BFR on carotid arterial compliance and muscle size in the elderly adults. Both BFR-walk training (BFR-W, n = 13, 66 +/- 1 year) and control-walk training (CON-W, n = 10, 68 +/- 1 year) groups performed 20 minutes treadmill walking at an exercise intensity of 45% of heart rate reserve, 4 days/week for 10 weeks. The BFR-W group wore pressure cuffs on both legs during training. Maximum knee joint strength (similar to 15%) and MRI-measured thigh muscle cross-sectional area (3%) increased in the BFR-W, but not in the CON-W. Carotid arterial compliance improved in both BFR-W (50%) and CON-W (59%) groups. Walk training with blood flow reduction can improve thigh muscle size/strength as well as carotid arterial compliance, unlike high-intensity training, in the elderly.

Relationship between intra-individual variability in nutrition-related lifestyle behaviors and blood glucose outcomes under free-living conditions in adults without type 2 diabetes

Eiichi Yoshimura, Yuka Hamada, Mana Hatanaka, Hinako Nanri, Takashi Nakagata, Naoyuki Matsumoto, Seiya Shimoda, Shigeho Tanaka, Motohiko Miyachi, Yoichi Hatamoto

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between intra-individual variability in day-to-day nutrition-related lifestyle behaviors and glycemic outcomes in adults without type 2 diabetes. The results showed that dinner time and eating window were positively correlated with blood glucose levels, while breakfast time was negatively associated with glucose outcomes. Sedentary time and total sleep time were also associated with glucose variability. Intra-individual variations in nutrition-related lifestyle behaviors were found to impact blood glucose control.

Interaction Between Sarcopenic Obesity and Nonlocomotive Physical Activity on the Risk of Depressive Symptoms in Community-Dwelling Older Adult Japanese Women

Yu Osugi, Aiko Imai, Toshiyuki Kurihara, Keiko Kishigami, Kazuhiko Higashida, Kiyoshi Sanada

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the interaction between sarcopenic obesity and locomotive and nonlocomotive physical activity (PA) on the risk of depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older Japanese women. Participants were classified according to two levels of total, locomotive, and nonlocomotive PA, and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale. The interaction between sarcopenic obesity groups and nonlocomotive PA significantly affected depressive symptoms, indicating that sarcopenic obesity combined with low nonlocomotive PA may exacerbate depressive symptoms in older women.

Summary: The study investigated the association between objectively assessed physical activity and mortality in community-dwelling older adults, and whether this association differs between frail and non-frail individuals. The findings revealed that there is a plateau in the relationship between daily step count and mortality at approximately 5000-7000 steps per day for non-frail individuals, while an inverse relationship exists at 5000 steps or more per day for frail individuals. These findings have implications for future physical activity guidelines.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether ratios of body cell mass/fat-free mass (BCM/FFM) and extracellular water/intracellular water (ECW/ICW) are predictors of maximal oxygen uptake (V??O(2)peak) independently of age, sex, and objectively measured physical activity (PA). The results showed that the BCM/FFM and ECW/ICW ratios are significant predictors of V??O(2)peak, independent of age, sex, FFM, leg power, and objectively measured PA.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal changes in physical activity trajectory according to sex and age, and determine the factors associated with dynamic changes in physical activity-related variables among Japanese adults. The study found that the rate of change in physical activity increased around the age of 70 and identified alcohol consumption, hand grips, leg power, and trunk flexibility as factors associated with this change.

Longitudinal trajectory of vascular age indices and cardiovascular risk factors: a repeated-measures analysis

Daiki Watanabe, Yuko Gando, Haruka Murakami, Hiroshi Kawano, Kenta Yamamoto, Akie Morishita, Nobuyuki Miyatake, Motohiko Miyachi

Summary: The study aimed to identify modifiable cardiovascular risk factors associated with longitudinal changes in nine functional and structural biological vascular aging indicators (BVAIs) and propose an effective method to prevent biological vascular aging. A longitudinal study was conducted on 697 adults aged between 26 and 85 years, with at least two BVAI measurements taken between 2007 and 2018. The analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and chronological age in both men and women, and identified multiple factors associated with BVAI changes.

Characteristic Gut Bacteria in High Barley Consuming Japanese Individuals without Hypertension

Summary: By analyzing the gut bacterial composition of participants, we found that individuals with high barley intake and no occurrence of hypertension had higher levels of Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcaceae UCG-013, Lachnospira, and Subdoligranulum, and lower levels of Lachnoclostridium and Prevotella 9 compared to those with high barley intake and hypertension risks. We also developed a machine-learning classification model based on gut bacteria to predict the effect of barley on the development of hypertension. These findings provide insights for the future development of personalized dietary strategies.

Association between excess mortality in depressive status and frailty among older adults: A population-based Kyoto-Kameoka prospective cohort study

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the mediator effect of frailty on the risk of excess death due to depression in older adults. By investigating 7,913 Japanese participants aged 65 years and above, it was found that there was a strong correlation between frailty and depression, with depression increasing the risk of mortality. The study suggests the importance of focusing on improving frailty in addition to conventional depression treatments.
