Gas concentrator with an activated carbon adsorbent for breath analysis

Hye-Lim Kang, Dong-ki Hong, Sumi Yoon, Sunga Song, Young Joo Kim, Won-Hyo Kim, Hana Cho, Hye-Won Kim, Woo-Kyeong Seong, Dong-Sik Shin, Kook-Nyung Lee

Summary: Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath is important for health assessment and disease diagnosis, but current small-sized VOC detectors lack sensitivity to detect low levels of VOCs. A proposed gas concentrator can effectively concentrate VOCs from exhaled breath to be detected by commercial VOC detectors, showing potential for disease diagnosis when combined with a gas analyzer or detector.

Hyeri Jeong, Young-Eun Jeon, Jin-Kyoung Yang, Jaehi Kim, Woo-Jae Chung, Yoon-Sik Lee, Dong-Sik Shin

Summary: Antioxidants, such as caffeic acid and its derivatives, play a crucial role in combating degenerative diseases and skin aging. The synthesized caffeoyl-prolyl-histidyl-Asn-NH2 derivative showed enhanced antioxidant activity and stability, making it a promising candidate for dermal therapeutic agents and cosmetic ingredients. Optimization of the solid-phase synthetic strategy allowed for large-scale production of these potentially beneficial compounds.

Welding Properties of Dissimilar Al-Cu Thin Plate by a Single-Mode Fiber Laser

Soon-Jae Lee, Kwang-Deok Choi, Su-Jin Lee, Dong-Sik Shin, Jae-Pil Jung

Summary: In order to improve the reliability and safety of electrical components in automobiles, researchers have used copper and aluminum as electrodes and employed lasers for rapid welding. However, in the welding of dissimilar metals such as aluminum and copper, the presence of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) reduces the strength of the weld. By using a high-quality laser with a high beam quality, researchers were able to increase the absorption rate and study the impact of welding speed on fracture behavior.
