Objectives: The aim of the study was to use meconium samples to assess fetal exposure to compounds present in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Material and Methods: In order to assess fetal exposure to toxic tobacco smoke compounds, samples of meconium from the offspring of women with different levels of tobacco smoke exposure, and the samples of saliva from the mothers were analyzed. Thiocyanate ion as a biomarker of tobacco smoke exposure, and other ions that are indices of such exposure were determined by means of ion chromatography. Results: The results of ion chromatography analysis of the meconium and maternal saliva samples for the presence of cations and anions (including thiocyanate ion) indicate that the concentration level of specific ions depends on the intensity of environmental tobacco smoke exposure of pregnant women. Conclusions: Based on the results, it can be concluded that meconium samples can be used to determine the substances from tobacco smoke. The results confirm the effect of smoking during pregnancy on the presence and content of substances from tobacco smoke.

Genotoxicity of selected pharmaceuticals, their binary mixtures, and varying environmental conditions - study with human adenocarcinoma cancer HT29 cell line

Monika Wieczerzak, Jacek Namiesnik, Blazej Kudlak

Summary: This study focused on the genotoxicity of pharmaceuticals from different therapeutic groups, both in mixtures and individual solutions, under different environmental conditions. The results showed that the addition of inorganic ions mainly reduced genotoxicity, while changes in the pH of pharmaceutical solutions significantly affected genotoxicity. Synergistic interactions were more commonly observed among mixtures.

Chemical hazard in glacial melt? The glacial system as a secondary source of POPs (in the Northern Hemisphere). A systematic review

Filip Pawlak, Krystyna Koziol, Zaneta Polkowska

Summary: The re-emission of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from glaciers poses potential health risks, especially when consuming aquatic organisms from glacial waters. Understanding the varying glacier melt rates, POPs content in glaciers, and the importance of distance from emission sources are crucial in assessing and monitoring these risks. Expanding research on the synergistic toxic effects of multiple contaminants and filling spatial data gaps are recommended for future risk assessment.

Sources and composition of chemical pollution in Maritime Antarctica (King George Island), part 1: Sediment and water analysis for PAH sources evaluation in the vicinity of Arctowski station

Joanna Potapowicz, Malgorzata Szopinska, Danuta Szuminska, Robert Jozef Bialik, Zaneta Polkowska

Summary: This study investigated the presence of PAHs in fresh waters and surface sediments on the western shore of Admiralty Bay over several sampling seasons. The results showed that biomass combustion and coal were the main sources of PAHs, with a limited contribution from petroleum sources. The study also indicated a minimal role of long-range atmospheric transport from South America in PAH pollution, with local activities being more closely associated with PAH contamination.

Effect of microwave and convection heating on selected nutrients of human milk

Dorota Martysiak-Zurowska, Edyta Malinowska-Panczyk, Malgorzata Orzolek, Barbara Kusznierewicz, Bogumila Kielbratowska

Summary: The study found that under conditions ensuring microbiological safety, microwave heating had minimal impact on the nutritional value of human milk compared to standard convection heating methods. Microwave heating led to slight increases in certain components, but the overall effect was lower than that of convection heating.

Effect of convection and microwave heating on the retention of bioactive components in human milk

Summary: Bioactive substances in human milk are important for premature newborns. Microwave heating compared to convection heating preserves more active proteins in human milk, but may degrade certain components like lysozyme. Controlled conditions of microwave heating are better for preserving the bioactive components of human milk.

Local variability in snow concentrations of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants as a source of large uncertainty in interpreting spatial patterns at all scales

Filip Pawlak, Krystyna Anna Koziol, Klaudia Kosek, Zaneta Polkowska

Summary: Single point sampling in snow studies due to logistical constraints can introduce unquantified error, particularly with low concentrations of chemicals like chlorinated persistent organic pollutants. Field experiments in the Arctic show varying levels of uncertainty at short and regional scales, suggesting the need for caution when interpreting spatial differences in snow concentrations.

Summary: The research conducted in the Coastal Landscape Park in 2016 focused on three rivers ending in the Baltic Sea: Piasnica, Karwianka, and Czarna Wda. Results showed that Piasnica and Czarna Wda rivers were affected by discharged treated wastewater, while Karwianka River's main pollution source could be surface runoff from fields and unregulated sewage management in the area. The research confirmed the urgent need for better protection of the area to preserve its ecosystem and value for tourism.
