Electron Transfer to the Trinuclear Copper Cluster in Electrocatalysis by the Multicopper Oxidases

Alina Sekretareva, Shiliang Tian, Sebastien Gounel, Nicolas Mano, Edward Solomon

Summary: High-potential multicopper oxidases (MCOs) are efficient catalysts for oxygen reduction with low overpotentials and commonly used in biofuel cells. This study investigated the electron transfer pathways in MCO electrocatalysis and found that electron transfer primarily occurs through the T1 site to the trinuclear copper cluster (TNC). The research provides insights into the factors controlling the kinetics of MCO electrocatalysis and guidance for designing more efficient biocathodes for the ORR.

Summary: One key method for designing bioinspired machines is transferring concepts from nature to man-made structures by integrating biomolecules into artificial mechanical systems, allowing the conversion of molecular information into macroscopic action. Hybrid bioelectrochemical swimmers can convert chiral information into enantiospecific macroscopic trajectories, with potential biomedical applications and food quality testing.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Cu2+ on the bioelectrocatalytic reduction of O2 by CueO, and found that Cu2+ decreased the activity of CueO and caused inactivation and reactivation processes. Kinetic analysis and pseudo-steady-state analysis revealed the relationship between Cu2+ and the enzymatic activity.

Summary: This study reports the electrochemical elaboration and characterization of a 3D coaxial macroporous twin-electrode, which is obtained by a low-cost bottom-up approach using nanoengineered highly organized porous material. The resulting electrode architecture allows for signal amplification in electroanalytical measurements and has potential applications in various (bio)electroanalytical fields.

Bi-enzymatic chemo-mechanical feedback loop for continuous self-sustained actuation of conducting polymers

Serena Arnaboldi, Gerardo Salinas, Sabrina Bichon, Sebastien Gounel, Nicolas Mano, Alexander Kuhn

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous bi-enzymatic system that utilizes the spontaneous oxidation and reduction of glucose and oxygen to trigger reversible motion. The system operates without the need for any external trigger, relying on the asymmetric uptake and release of ions on a conducting polymer strip that houses glucose oxidase and bilirubin oxidase enzymes. The time-asymmetric consumption of both fuels by the enzymatic reactions leads to the autonomous actuation of the device.
