Site-specific recognition of SARS-CoV-2 nsp1 protein with a tailored titanium dioxide nanoparticle - elucidation of the complex structure using NMR data and theoretical calculation

Peter Agback, Tatiana Agback, Francisco Dominguez, Elena Frolova, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva, Vadim G. Kessler

Summary: This study investigated the interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 nsp1 protein and two types of titania nanoparticles using NMR. The aminoalcohol-capped particles showed strong complexation with a specific part of the protein, potentially interfering with its functionality.

Evidence of the mineral ZnHAsO4 center dot H2O, koritnigite, controlling As(V) and Zn(II) solubility in a multi-contaminated soil

Carin Sjostedt, Asa Kristofferson, Jon Petter Gustafsson, Ann-Sophie Heldele, Vadim Kessler, Dan B. Kleja

Summary: Assessing speciation and solubility control mechanisms in multi-contaminated soils, this study focused on the historical contamination of As, Cu, Cr, and Zn salts in soil and found a koritnigite phase controlling the dissolved fraction of As(V) and Zn, significantly lowering As solubility at higher pH levels.

Tailoring Nanoadsorbent Surfaces: Separation of Rare Earths and Late Transition Metals in Recycling of Magnet Materials

Ani Vardanyan, Anna Guillon, Tetyana Budnyak, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva

Summary: Novel silica-based adsorbents with amine and sulfur containing functional groups were synthesized. These adsorbents showed good adsorption and separation performance for Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Late Transition Metals (LTM). The adsorption equilibrium data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm model. The organo-silicas demonstrated higher affinity towards LTM and had adsorption capacities ranging from 0.5 to 1.8 mmol/g.

Synthesis, Structure, and Thermal Properties of Volatile Group 11 Triazenides as Potential Precursors for Vapor Deposition

Rouzbeh Samii, Anton Fransson, Pamburayi Mpofu, Pentti Niiranen, Lars Ojamaee, Vadim Kessler, Nathan J. O'Brien

Summary: Group 11 thin films are desirable for interconnects in microelectronics. Monovalent Cu, Ag, and Au 1,3-di-tert-butyltriazenides show potential as single-source precursors for vapor deposition, with comparable thermal stability and volatility to current state-of-the-art precursors. Solution thermolysis of these triazenides yields polycrystalline films of elemental Cu, Ag, and Au.

Molecular mechanisms of the metal oxide sol-gel process and their application in approaches to thermodynamically challenging complex oxide materials

Vadim G. Kessler, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva

Summary: This review summarizes recent insights into general reaction pathways in sol-gel synthesis of metal oxides. Metal-based sol-gel precursors display high reactivity and reversibility on a molecular level. The formation of metal oxide sols involves nucleation of oxide phase with growth option efficiently precluded by low solubility. The sols are stabilized by colloid forces and can be denoted as Micelles Templated by Self-Assembly of Ligands (MTSALs). The sol-gel transition occurs on particle aggregation, allowing the production of materials with controlled porosity and access to thermodynamically challenging phases.

Clusters or paperbags? What can we actually learn from the structure and reactivity of oligonuclear metal-oxo-alkoxide complexes?

Vadim G. Kessler

Summary: This article proposes a new term "paperbag compound" to replace "cluster" for oligonuclear non-cluster species. Analysis of structure and bonding parameters in paperbag compounds can provide new insights into the reactivity of metal oxide nanoparticles in biological systems.

Uptake and separation of rare earth elements and late transition metal cations by nanoadsorbent grafted with diamino ligands

Marijana Lakic, Troy C. Breijaert, Geoffrey Daniel, Fredric G. Svensson, Vadim G. Kessler, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva

Summary: Recycling of magnetic materials based on rare earth elements (REE) is important for clean energy production and transportation. One challenge is separating smaller amounts of late transition metals (LTM) from REE, which can be addressed using hybrid adsorbents. This study synthesized novel silica-based nanoadsorbents and found that they have high selectivity for LTM. The prepared materials showed rapid uptake of LTM cations and demonstrated potential for environmentally friendly separation techniques.

Troy C. Breijaert, Tetyana M. Budnyak, Vadim K. Kessler, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva

Summary: This article introduces a bio-based adsorbent nanomaterial, which is functionalized with cotton-derived nano cellulose particles and a polyamino ligand for the recycling of renewable energy and exhaust-free transportation. The research findings show that this adsorbent has high adsorption capacity and pronounced selectivity for late transition elements.

Factors influencing stoichiometry and stability of polyoxometalate - peptide complexes

Bjorn H. Greijer, Gustav Nestor, Jan E. Eriksson, Gulaim A. Seisenbaeva, Vadim G. Kessler

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between POMs and biomolecules, and finds that pH, ionic strength, and the molar ratio of POM to peptide are the main factors influencing their interaction. The sodium cations also play a role in directing the structure. These factors are important for the application of POMs in biological systems.
