Using Models in Forensic Engineering: All Models Are Wrong, but Some Are Useful

Summary: Computer models play a crucial role in both structural design and forensic analysis. During the design process, assumptions about loads and materials need to be made, whereas in investigating a failure, information about materials, structural configuration, and applied loads at the time of collapse can be known. Nonlinear models are a powerful tool for forensic investigations if used correctly. Numerous case studies have been published in the ASCE Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities or presented at the ASCE Forensics Congresses, providing an overview of modeling applications in forensic investigations and addressing associated issues.

Summary: Sparse Principal Component Analysis (sPCA) is a matrix factorization approach based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) that aims to improve data interpretation, particularly for high-dimensional biological omics data. Part I of this series highlighted limitations of state-of-the-art sPCA algorithms when modeling noise-free data, while Part II focuses on analyzing the drawbacks of sPCA methods using deflation for calculating subsequent components, showing potential problems in model interpretation even for noise-free data. New diagnostics are proposed to identify modeling issues in real-data analysis.

All Models Are Wrong, and Some Are Religious: Supernatural Explanations as Abstract and Useful Falsehoods about Complex Realities

Summary: The supernatural explanations in religion are byproducts of our cognitive adaptations, which may result from our tendency to generate anthropomorphic explanations or a tool for explaining complex, unobservable, and uncertain phenomena. A naive observer can improve the bias-variance trade-off by starting with a simple, underspecified explanation that appears supernatural. Knowledge specialists across cultures offer pragmatic services, including supernatural explanations, and their clients are often willing to pay for these services.

The research in this volume of Periodontology 2000 by female scientists has widened our view on periodontal microbiome and influenced traditional patterns of periodontal therapeutics.

Spotting When Algorithms Are Wrong

Summary: Users of sociotechnical systems often rely on the system to make decisions without being able to independently verify the accuracy of system outputs. This can lead to problems when the system is wrong, resulting in poor decisions and violations of practical reasoning norms. To address this, the implementation of defeaters is suggested, either by providing information about the system's unreliability in a specific case (undercutting defeat) or independent evidence that the output is incorrect (rebutting defeat). A case study of the Dutch tax agency's risk classification algorithm is used to analyze this suggestion.

All models are wrong, but which are useful? Comparing parametric and nonparametric estimation of causal effects in finite samples

Summary: There has been a longstanding debate on whether nonparametric estimation using machine learning has any advantage over simpler, parametric approaches in finite sample estimation of causal effects. This study compares the performance of nonparametric and parametric estimators in estimating the average treatment effect across a large number of data-generating mechanisms. The results show that the two nonparametric estimators can significantly reduce bias compared to the parametric estimators in large-sample settings with interactions and nonlinearities, while maintaining comparable performance even in simple, small-sample settings.
