Summary: An investigational interface device was developed to connect needle electrodes to BIS sensors for surgeries where standard electrode placement is not feasible. Statistical analysis confirmed significant concordance between direct and indirect BIS values, providing an opportunity for intraoperative monitoring in patients with unconventional electrode placement.

Summary: Despite the increase in living donor liver transplants, the outcomes of retransplantation after living donor liver transplant need further investigation. This study compared the waitlist outcomes and survival post-retransplant in recipients of initial living or deceased donor grafts. The results showed similar waitlist mortality and survival rates for both types of transplants.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical impact of gas monitoring and BIS monitoring on hypoxic events during oral therapeutic and invasive endoscopic procedures. The results showed that apnea detected by gas monitoring was an independent predictor of hypoxia, while BIS values were not significantly associated with hypoxia events, but showed a significant downward trend before hypoxia events.

Summary: Abundance indices are important for monitoring and assessing fish population dynamics, and fishery-independent surveys are commonly used to derive these indices. However, changes in survey protocols can introduce biases in the estimates, necessitating calibration. This study evaluated the Long River Survey in the Hudson River Estuary and developed models to mitigate the impact of changes in sampling protocol on fish abundance estimates.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different depths of sedation during propofol anesthesia on postoperative recovery in adult patients undergoing knee arthroscopy. The results showed that while high-bispectral-index anesthesia did not improve postoperative recovery, it reduced propofol consumption and shortened extubation and anesthesia recovery time. Patients receiving low-bispectral-index anesthesia may have better sleep quality and physical comfort compared to those receiving high-bispectral-index anesthesia.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the impact of electromyogram (EMG) on the bispectral index (BIS) values under remimazolam and propofol anesthesia. The results showed that remimazolam caused higher BIS values compared to propofol, and there was a correlation between BIS, EMG, and SEF95 under both anesthesia methods.

Summary: It has been demonstrated that exhaled ciprofol concentration can be monitored online using the UV-TOFMS instrument. A correlation has been observed between exhaled ciprofol concentration and both plasma concentration and cerebral effects. This suggests the potential for using exhaled ciprofol monitoring to titrate depth of anesthesia in clinical settings.

Summary: Colorectal cancer survivors are at an increased risk of metachronous cancer and second cancer due to improvements in oncologic outcomes, with sarcopenia being identified as a factor with potential impact on long-term survival. Pre- and postoperative sarcopenia and changes in sarcopenic condition during surveillance are associated with oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer patients.

Summary: This study aims to compare the long-term projections estimated using RMST from within-trial follow-up data with the actual long-term outcomes in the extension studies. The results generally show that age-based survival projections using within-trial data provide concordant results with the actual survival measured in long-term follow-up extension studies.

Summary: Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a common cause of nosocomial diarrhea. TcdB impairs lysosomal function in macrophages, leading to inflammation. Vitamin D-3 and carbamazepine protect against CDI by restoring lysosomal function and the expression of the transcription factor MITF in macrophages.

Summary: This study reveals that tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) have evolved specific genetic features, such as longer 3' untranslated regions (3' UTRs) with higher density of binding sites for RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), to optimize their tumor-suppressing functions. These features are correlated with higher gene expression in normal tissues and with the ability of TSGs to resist cancer-specific downregulation.

Summary: This study defines and validates a state of postoperative systemic inflammatory dysregulation (PSID) based on postoperative phenotypic extremes of plasma C-reactive protein concentration. PSID is associated with higher rates of sepsis, complications, longer hospital stays, and poorer short and long-term outcomes. Altered DNA methylation and differential gene expression in specific immune and metabolic pathways are identified during PSID, highlighting potential targets for early detection and treatment.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome caused by immune dysfunction in response to infection. It is a highly heterogeneous condition with complex mechanisms. The immune response to sepsis includes both hyper-inflammatory and immune-suppressive phases, and dysregulated m6A modifications play a significant role in immune cell changes during sepsis.

Summary: Interrupted time series (ITS) studies are commonly used to investigate the impact of interventions or exposures on population-level outcomes. A systematic review with meta-analysis of ITS designs can provide guidance for public health and policy decision-making. Although raw data is often not provided in publications, digitally extracting time series data from graphs is a feasible approach. However, the accuracy of effect estimates derived from digitally extracted data is currently uncertain.

Summary: International recommendations suggest the administration of oxygen during surgery to reduce the risk of surgical site infection, but the optimal oxygen regimen remains uncertain. The HOT-ROX trial aims to evaluate the effect of different oxygen therapy regimens on postoperative recovery in adults undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Summary: This protocol describes a substudy of the POISE-3 trial, which aims to investigate the effect of a perioperative hypotension-avoidance strategy compared with a hypertension-avoidance strategy on the risk of acute kidney injury in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. The study will be a randomized clinical trial involving patients aged 45 years or older who routinely take antihypertensive medications. The results of this substudy will provide valuable insights into the perioperative management of blood pressure to prevent acute kidney injury.
