Nonionic synthetic surfactants, constituted of an assortment of classes, are common ingredients of industrial, household and body-care products. Alone or in combination with anionic surfactants, they perform a variety of functions including cleaning action, emulsification, skin conditioning, appearance and consistency modification, solubilization and dispersing agents. By far fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AEs) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs) are more extensively used than any other nonionic surfactant class; however, works appearing in the literature making reference to the analysis of other nonionic surfactant classes have also been collected in this review. The production volume worldwide of AEs and APEs, and consequently their environmental impact, is very high. Although readily biodegraded, stable non-ethoxylated lipophilic residues remain for long periods in the aquatic environment and sediments. In addition to its harmful impact on the food chain, there is also concern on landscape spoiling, particularly in coastal areas. The analytical methods used for quality control of nonionic surfactants in industrial products and in environmental samples are revised and commented upon here. The fundamentals and characteristics of the methods, including their most relevant operative and statistical aspects, are briefly presented. Attention is also paid to the techniques used to extract and preconcentrate the analytes from liquid and solid environmental samples.

Hector Martinez-Perez-Cejuela, Enrique Javier Carrasco-Correa, Ancuta Moga, Maria Vergara-Barberan, Miriam Beneito-Cambra, Maria Jesus Lerma-Garcia, Ernesto Francisco Simo-Alfonso, Jose Manuel Herrero-Martinez

Summary: In recent years, there have been significant efforts in miniaturization, with the emergence of formats such as chips, 3D-printed objects, and paper-based devices. These systems have been utilized in biological and chemical processes, leveraging their advantages of waste reduction, low cost, and portability. However, there is a need to further develop more user-friendly devices with improved performance to address current analytical challenges. This review aims to address this research gap by highlighting the recent contributions of reticular porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), in these miniaturized and emerging formats.

Summary: The contamination of aquatic environments by pharmaceuticals used by modern societies, especially antibiotics, poses a serious threat to humans due to the potential for creating drug-resistant bacteria. This study reports a family of three isoreticular MOFs derived from natural amino acids that show high efficiency in removing a mixture of different families of antibiotics. A specific MOF, called MTV-MOF, prepared using equal percentages of L-serine and L-methionine, not only exhibits outstanding recyclability but also outperforms activated carbon. The successful removal performance of MTV-MOF is explained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, highlighting the potential of MOFs as a promising alternative for capturing antibiotics from wastewater streams.

Aitor Sorribes-Soriano, Francesc Albert Esteve-Turrillas, Sergio Armenta, Jose Manuel Herrero-Martinez

Summary: In this study, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-coated stir bar for recognizing diazepam was prepared. The MIP was synthesized using methacrylic acid as a functional monomer, diazepam as a template, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinker, and azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The resulting polymer-modified stir bar was characterized and used in a stir-bar-sorptive-extraction (SBSE) method in combination with ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) or ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The MIP-SBSE coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS showed satisfactory results in quantifying traces of diazepam in water samples, while the MIP-SBSE using IMS exhibited high sensitivity for rapid screening of the compound in different matrices.
