Cotinine (COT), trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (OH-COT), cotinine-N-beta-glucuronide (COT-GLUC), and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine-O-beta-glucuronide (OH-COT-GLUC) are excreted in urine following the intake of nicotine (NIC), and, as such, they have been detected in sewage. Thus, they also constitute convenient biomarkers for NIC tracing through the sewage epidemiology approach at the local scale. Such estimation requires granting a good stability of the target biomarkers in sewage. However, it was found that glucuronides are not stable, particularly in the case of OH-COT-GLUC, which could render variable concentrations of COT, OH-COT, and their glucuronides, depending on sampling and storage time or temperature. Thus, an enzymatic deconjugation with beta-glucuronidase was optimized. With the optimized method, after enzymatic deglucuronization, the limits of quantification obtained were in the range of 0.2-1 mu g L-1, relative standard deviations were <10%, and the trueness in terms of recovery was in the 95%-112% range. The application of the method to composite sewage samples collected during 1 week in three different years in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain) showed COT and OH-COT concentrations of 0.3-1.9 mu g L-1 and 1.0-3.3 mu g L-1, respectively. Thereby, the average NIC consumption derived was in the 1.7-1.9 mg per day and person range, being comparable to those derived from tobacco sales statistics.

Functionalized mesoporous silicas SBA-15 for heterogeneous photocatalysis towards CECs removal from secondary urban wastewater

Bruna Castanheira, Larissa Otubo, Cristiano L. P. Oliveira, Rosa Montes, Jose Benito Quintana, Rosario Rodil, Sergio Brochsztain, Vitor J. P. Vilar, Antonio Carlos S. C. Teixeira

Summary: The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles supported on mesoporous silica SBA-15 was evaluated for the photodegradation of sulfadiazine. The 30% TiO2/SBA-15 sample showed the best performance in pure water solutions and also demonstrated higher SDZ degradation efficiency in urban secondary wastewater. Additionally, LC-MS analysis identified 65 other CECs in the wastewater sample, which were effectively removed by the photocatalytic system.

Tracking pollutants in a municipal sewage network impairing the operation of a wastewater treatment plant

Mariana F. T. Sa, Veronica Castro, Ana Gomes, Daniela F. S. Morais, Rui V. P. S. Silva Braga, Isabel Saraiva, Bianca M. Souza-Chaves, Minkyu Park, Victoria Fernandez-Fernandez, Rosario Rodil, Rosa Montes, Jose Benito Quintana, Vitor J. P. Vilar

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of organic contaminants and dissolved organic matter in the sewer network, highlighting the impact of higher contamination areas on the performance of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The presence of surfactants and their concentration in the influent contributed to the morphological changes in the activated sludge and affected the overall efficiency of the plant.

Screening of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Surface Water and Wastewater Effluents, Assisted by the Persistency-Mobility-Toxicity Criteria

Rosa Montes, Sandra Mendez, Nieves Carro, Julio Cobas, Nelson Alves, Teresa Neuparth, Miguel Machado Santos, Jose Benito Quintana, Rosario Rodil

Summary: Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are a group of compounds with diverse origins that have recently garnered increasing environmental attention. The NOR-Water project aimed to identify the main CECs and their sources in the water environment of the Northern Portugal-Galicia transnational region. Through the use of liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), a total of 343 chemicals were tentatively identified in the analyzed samples, with 153 classified as persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) and 23 as very persistent and very mobile (vMvP).

Summary: This study investigated the use of illicit drugs and licit substances of abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in several locations in Spain and Portugal using wastewater-based epidemiology. The results showed widespread use of substances such as cannabis and cocaine, with limited use of methamphetamine. The study also confirmed two instances of ecstasy dumping in the sewage network.

Metformin disrupts Danio rerio metabolism at environmentally relevant concentrations: A full life-cycle study

Susana Barros, Marta Ribeiro, Ana M. Coimbra, Marlene Pinheiro, Hugo Morais, Nelson Alves, Rosa Montes, Rosario Rodil, Jose Benito Quintana, Miguel M. Santos, Teresa Neuparth

Summary: This study investigated the effects of metformin on zebrafish metabolism and other biological processes. The results indicate that environmentally relevant concentrations of metformin severely disrupt zebrafish metabolism and lead to disturbances in critical biochemical and molecular processes, as well as impacting other important pathways.

Are Fish Populations at Risk? Metformin Disrupts Zebrafish Development and Reproductive Processes at Chronic Environmentally Relevant Concentrations

Susana Barros, Nelson Alves, Marlene Pinheiro, Marta Ribeiro, Hugo Morais, Rosa Montes, Rosario Rodil, Jose Benito Quintana, Ana M. Coimbra, Miguel M. Santos, Teresa Neuparth

Summary: This study investigated the generational effects of the antidiabetic drug MET on zebrafish and its nonexposed offspring. The results showed that MET had significant effects on reproductive-related parameters in zebrafish, with parental exposure to MET impacting critical molecular processes and upregulating male vtg1 expression, indicating an estrogenic effect. The nonexposed offspring also experienced negative effects on survival and growth due to parental MET exposure.

Continuous-flow titration of low iron doses to promote photo-Fenton and photo-Fenton-like processes at neutral pH

Carla Santos, Miguel Herraiz-Carbone, Engracia Lacasa, Cristina Saez, Rosa Montes, Jose Benito Quintana, Rosario Rodil, Ana I. Gomes, Vitor J. P. Vilar

Summary: This research explores the use of a tubular membrane photoreactor for continuous titration of Fe2+ to enhance the Photo-Fenton process for the tertiary treatment of urban wastewater. The study shows that the PF-like process exhibits superior performance in removing contaminants compared to traditional PF process, especially for melamine. The PF-like process also has advantages in terms of higher residual concentrations of Fe2+ and lower precipitation of PO43-, making it a promising option for tertiary treatment.

Ozone membrane contactor to intensify gas/liquid mass transfer and contaminants of emerging concern oxidation

Pedro H. Presumido, Rosa Montes, Jose B. Quintana, Rosario Rodil, Manuel Feliciano, Gianluca Li Puma, Ana Gomes, Vitor J. P. Vilar

Summary: A tubular porous borosilicate membrane contactor was studied for ozone gas/water mass transfer and removal of contaminants in water. Increasing the gas and liquid flow rate improved the mass transfer efficiency, with the main resistances being in the water phase boundary layer and the membrane. The contactor showed good feasibility in removing contaminants, but photocatalytic ozonation did not significantly enhance treatment performance.
