Summary: Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe extraction methods have been developed for the determination of drugs in biological specimens. In this study, we developed two fully automated extraction methods based on acetonitrile salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction. Both methods showed high linearity, sensitivity, and satisfactory precision, accuracy, and matrix effects. Method 1 provided higher recovery rates, while method 2 offered higher detection sensitivities due to its solid-phase extraction cleanup step.

Summary: An analytical method using GC-MS/MS combined with quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe extraction was developed to determine 57 pesticides in fishery products. The method showed low limits of detection and quantification, acceptable linearity of calibration curves, and good recoveries and reproducibility. The results of analyzing actual samples indicate that most samples were not contaminated by the target pesticides, except for a few samples with low levels of specific pesticides.

Summary: The widespread use of benzothiazoles, benzotriazoles, and benzenesulfonamides in various environmental matrices has led to their presence in edible fish, posing an additional exposure route for the population. This study developed a method for simultaneous determination of these compounds in seafood samples. The use of QuEChERS extraction and specific clean-up strategies resulted in high recoveries and minimized matrix effects. Application of the method to commercially available samples confirmed the presence of these compounds, with negligible risk for the population when consuming fish.

Summary: Derivatization is a valuable practice for analyzing difficult analytes in complex matrices. The availability of derivatizing reagents has made analyte modification more feasible. Derivatization techniques have enhanced the analytical strength in recent years. Although conventional HPLC lacks sufficient sensitivity, combining it with derivatization can significantly improve sensitivity.

Summary: We report a new method for synthesizing phosphine (PR3) and di-N-heterocyclic carbene (di-NHC) ligand stabilized molecular gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The reaction of di-NHC gold(I) complexes with [Au11(PPh3)8Cl2]Cl clusters results in the formation of three new classes of AuNCs through a controllable reaction sequence. The electronic and steric properties of the di-NHC ligand affect the product distribution, leading to the isolation and characterization of different clusters. One of the characterized clusters shows strong emission in solution.

Summary: Organic aerosols, containing brown carbon (BrC), can affect the planet's radiative balance by absorbing and scattering light, as well as activating cloud droplets. This study investigated the photomineralization mechanism and its effect on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) abilities in different types of BrC samples. Results showed that photomineralization occurred in all BrC samples, leading to changes in optical properties and chemical composition of aging organic aerosols.

Summary: The ever-increasing ambient ozone (O3) pollution in China has led to exacerbating cardiopulmonary premature deaths. However, the urban-rural exposure inequity has been rarely explored. This study assesses the population-scale O3 exposure and mortality burdens in China between 1990 and 2019 based on integrated pollution tracking and epidemiological evidence. The findings reveal that the Chinese population has been suffering from an increasing O3 exposure of 4.3 +/- 2.8 ppb per decade due to rapid urbanization and socioeconomic activities. Rural residents are significantly more exposed to ambient O3, 9.8 +/- 4.1 ppb higher than their adjacent urban counterparts, resulting in compromised mortality risks for the total population due to migration driven by urbanization. The cardiopulmonary premature deaths attributable to long-term O3 exposure in 2019, underestimated in previous studies, amount to 373,500 (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 240,600-510,900), as cardiovascular causes were ignored. Future O3 pollution policies should prioritize the rural population, who face an aggravating threat of mortality risks, to address environmental health injustice.

Summary: Glyphosate (GLY), a widely used herbicide, has raised concerns due to its toxicity and mobility in water. The simultaneous spread of similar herbicides, such as glufosinate (GLUF) and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), has also caused environmental concerns. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with polydopamine and functionalized with metal ions (Ti(iv), Zr(iv), and Cu(ii)) showed promise in selectively removing GLY, AMPA, and GLUF from water, and were effective even in the presence of competitive species. MNPs functionalized with Ti(iv) and Zr(iv) performed more efficiently than Cu(ii)-functionalized MNPs.

Summary: Metals in atmospheric aerosols have impacts on health and the environment, which depend on their solubility, dissolution kinetics, and chemical form. This study investigates the impact of fog processing on the solubility and dissolution kinetics of metals in PM2.5 samples collected in an urban background site. The study finds that the solubility of certain metals is higher in samples collected during foggy days compared to dry conditions.
