In the understanding of colony loss phenomena, a worldwide crisis of honeybee colonies which has serious consequences for both apiculture and bee-pollination-dependent farm production, analytical chemistry can play an important role. For instance, rapid and accurate analytical procedures are currently required to better assess the effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on honeybee health. Since their introduction in agriculture, neonicotinoid insecticides have been blamed for being highly toxic to honeybees, possibly at the nanogram per bee level or lower. As a consequence, most of the analytical methods recently optimized have focused on the analysis of ultratraces of neonicotinoids using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques to study the effects of sublethal doses. However, recent evidences on two novel routes-seedling guttations and seed coating particulate, both associated with corn crops-that may expose honeybees to huge amounts of neonicotinoids in the field, with instantly lethal effects, suggest that selected procedures need optimizing. In the present work, a simplified ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-diode-array detection method for the determination of neonicotinoids in single bees has been optimized and validated. The method ensures good selectivity, good accuracy, and adequate detection limits, which make it suitable for the purpose, while maintaining its ability to evaluate exposure variability of individual bees. It has been successfully applied to the analysis of bees in free flight over an experimental sowing field, with the bees therefore being exposed to seed coating particulate released by the pneumatic drilling machine.

Derivatization, an Applicable Asset for Conventional HPLC Systems without MS Detection in Food and Miscellaneous Analysis

Raghav Dogra, Mohit Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Marco Roverso, Sara Bogialli, Paolo Pastore, Uttam Kumar Mandal

Summary: Derivatization is a valuable practice for analyzing difficult analytes in complex matrices. The availability of derivatizing reagents has made analyte modification more feasible. Derivatization techniques have enhanced the analytical strength in recent years. Although conventional HPLC lacks sufficient sensitivity, combining it with derivatization can significantly improve sensitivity.

Effect of repeated intakes of a neonicotinoid insecticide on the foraging behaviours of Apis mellifera in field trials

Summary: This study explores the effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on forager bees and their foraging activity. It shows that even low concentrations of the insecticides can limit foraging activity, protecting the hive from toxins, but reduced feeding of the hive can still compromise colony health.

From Au11 to Au13: Tailored Synthesis of Superatomic Di-NHC/PPh3-Stabilized Molecular Gold Nanoclusters

Matteo Bevilacqua, Marco Roverso, Sara Bogialli, Claudia Graiff, Andrea Biffis

Summary: We report a new method for synthesizing phosphine (PR3) and di-N-heterocyclic carbene (di-NHC) ligand stabilized molecular gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). The reaction of di-NHC gold(I) complexes with [Au11(PPh3)8Cl2]Cl clusters results in the formation of three new classes of AuNCs through a controllable reaction sequence. The electronic and steric properties of the di-NHC ligand affect the product distribution, leading to the isolation and characterization of different clusters. One of the characterized clusters shows strong emission in solution.

Summary: In this study, a bacterial consortium was designed to remove glyphosate from polluted water with the support of oxygen produced by a microalgal species. The designed consortium demonstrated its ability to adapt to different concentrations of glyphosate and effectively remove it from water.

Tracking the Photomineralization Mechanism in Irradiated Lab-Generated and Field-Collected Brown Carbon Samples and Its Effect on Cloud Condensation Nuclei Abilities

Silvan Mueller, Chiara Giorio, Nadine Borduas-Dedekind

Summary: Organic aerosols, containing brown carbon (BrC), can affect the planet's radiative balance by absorbing and scattering light, as well as activating cloud droplets. This study investigated the photomineralization mechanism and its effect on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) abilities in different types of BrC samples. Results showed that photomineralization occurred in all BrC samples, leading to changes in optical properties and chemical composition of aging organic aerosols.

Antagonism between ambient ozone increase and urbanization-oriented population migration on Chinese cardiopulmonary mortality

Haitong Zhe Sun, Junchao Zhao, Xiang Liu, Minghao Qiu, Huizhong Shen, Serge Guillas, Chiara Giorio, Zosia Staniaszek, Pei Yu, Michelle W. L. Wan, Man Mei Chim, Kim Robin van Daalen, Yilin Li, Zhenze Liu, Mingtao Xia, Shengxian Ke, Haifan Zhao, Haikun Wang, Kebin He, Huan Liu, Yuming Guo, Alexander T. Archibald

Summary: The ever-increasing ambient ozone (O3) pollution in China has led to exacerbating cardiopulmonary premature deaths. However, the urban-rural exposure inequity has been rarely explored. This study assesses the population-scale O3 exposure and mortality burdens in China between 1990 and 2019 based on integrated pollution tracking and epidemiological evidence. The findings reveal that the Chinese population has been suffering from an increasing O3 exposure of 4.3 +/- 2.8 ppb per decade due to rapid urbanization and socioeconomic activities. Rural residents are significantly more exposed to ambient O3, 9.8 +/- 4.1 ppb higher than their adjacent urban counterparts, resulting in compromised mortality risks for the total population due to migration driven by urbanization. The cardiopulmonary premature deaths attributable to long-term O3 exposure in 2019, underestimated in previous studies, amount to 373,500 (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 240,600-510,900), as cardiovascular causes were ignored. Future O3 pollution policies should prioritize the rural population, who face an aggravating threat of mortality risks, to address environmental health injustice.

Metallic functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles enhances the selective removal of glyphosate, AMPA, and glufosinate from surface water

Raghav Dogra, Marco Roverso, Giuseppe Di Bernardo, Alessandra Zanut, Fazel A. Monikh, Silvia Pettenuzzo, Paolo Pastore, Sara Bogialli

Summary: Glyphosate (GLY), a widely used herbicide, has raised concerns due to its toxicity and mobility in water. The simultaneous spread of similar herbicides, such as glufosinate (GLUF) and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), has also caused environmental concerns. Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with polydopamine and functionalized with metal ions (Ti(iv), Zr(iv), and Cu(ii)) showed promise in selectively removing GLY, AMPA, and GLUF from water, and were effective even in the presence of competitive species. MNPs functionalized with Ti(iv) and Zr(iv) performed more efficiently than Cu(ii)-functionalized MNPs.

Summary: The coordination sphere engineering of three heteroleptic Ni(ii) beta-diketonate-diamine adducts was studied, and it was found that the chemico-physical characteristics of the compounds directly depend on the functional groups in the diketonate ligands. Preliminary thermal CVD experiments demonstrated the suitability of the precursors for the obtainment of NiO films with flat and homogeneous surfaces.

Summary: Metals in atmospheric aerosols have impacts on health and the environment, which depend on their solubility, dissolution kinetics, and chemical form. This study investigates the impact of fog processing on the solubility and dissolution kinetics of metals in PM2.5 samples collected in an urban background site. The study finds that the solubility of certain metals is higher in samples collected during foggy days compared to dry conditions.
