This paper presents the development of a fast and sensitive analytical method for the simultaneous determination of UV filters and degradation products having quite different polarities (log Kow 2.19-6.88) in sediment, by means of pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with in-cell purification and analysis by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). Analytes were simultaneously concentrated and purified by placing aluminium oxide as clean-up sorbent in the extraction cell for a faster sample pre-treatment. Under optimized conditions, quantitative recoveries (only one compound below 80%) and satisfactory precision (RSD, 5-15%) were obtained. Low limits of detection were achieved of 0.5-15 ng/g dry weight (dw). The use of PLE extraction and purification and UPLC technology enabled all the compounds to be separated chromatographically in less than 9 min, and with a total chromatographic analysis time of 18 min. This method significantly decreased the overall time of analysis as compared to those of previously developed. Finally, the optimized methodology was applied to investigate the occurrence of the target UV filters in sediment samples collected along the Ebro river basin (Spain). UV filters were detected in 95% of the sediment samples analysed. Results revealed a widespread presence of octocrylene (OC), reaching concentrations up to 24 x 10(2) ng/g dw, the highest reported so far. Ethylhexyl dimethyl PABA (OD-PABA) and benzophenone-3 (BP3) were also frequently detected (60-65%), but at lower concentrations (4.4-27 ng/g dw). 4DHB (an estrogenic degradation product of BP3) was present in three samples at concentrations between 12 and 21 ng/g dw. These results constitute the first data on the occurrence of OD-PABA and 4DHB in sediments.

Ebrahem M. M. Eid, Ahmed A. A. Hussain, Saad A. M. Alamri, Sulaiman A. A. Alrumman, Kamal H. H. Shaltout, Nasser Sewelam, Salma K. K. Shaltout, Ahmed F. F. El-Bebany, Mohamed T. T. Ahmed, Dhafer A. A. Al-Bakre, Ahmed H. H. Alfarhan, Yolanda Pico, Damia Barcelo

Summary: Predictive models were generated to assess the absorption of nine metals by the different parts of forage sorghum in growing media mixed with poultry manure. The roots exhibited the highest metal contents. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF) values were < 1 for some metals and > 1 for others. Translocation factor values were < 1 for all metals except for Co, Cr, and Ni. The predictive models showed a high level of data precision and can be used to ensure the safety of growing forage sorghum in media fortified with poultry manure.

Efficient degradation of Bisphenol A by Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle activating persulfate with the assistance of biochar-supported MoO2

Da Ouyang, Ronghao Wu, Zhaojun Xu, Xiaomin Zhu, Yimin Cai, Ruihuan Chen, Changyin Zhu, Damia Barcelo, Haibo Zhang

Summary: In this study, biochar-supported molybdenum dioxide was used as a co-catalyst to enhance the activation ability of Fe3+ on persulfate for the degradation of Bisphenol A. The results showed that over 96% of BPA was removed within 60 minutes, and the degradation efficiency only slightly decreased after four reuses of the co-catalyst. The study also revealed that biochar supports the adsorption of Fe3+ on the MoO2 surface and promotes electron transfer. This work provides a new insight for improving the degradation of organic contaminants in wastewater.

Marius Kalinauskas, Katazyna Bogdzevic, Eduardo Gomes, Miguel Inacio, Damia Barcelo, Wenwu Zhao, Paulo Pereira

Summary: This study aims to map and assess the supply and demand of recreational culture ecosystem services (CES) in Vilnius. The results showed that natural recreational CES supply was highest in protected areas, while cultural recreational CES supply had the highest scores in the city centre. The demand for recreational CES was highest in the areas near the city centre. There was a mismatch between the supply and demand of natural recreational CES, but a match between the supply and demand of cultural recreational CES. Overall, it is important to preserve areas with high natural recreation CES supply and limit urban expansion, as well as improve public transport accessibility to reduce pollution and its impact on cultural heritage sites.

A ?Limitations? section should be mandatory in all scientific papers

John P. Sumpter, Tamsin J. Runnalls, Andrew C. Johnson, Damia Barcelo

Summary: It is uncommon for scientists to acknowledge the limitations of their research because of the pressure to publish. This has resulted in a crisis of reproducibility in published research. To address this, including a 'Limitations' section in scientific papers is suggested, as it promotes honesty and transparency. This recommendation applies to all scientific disciplines.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal occurrence of pharmaceutical residues in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon in south-eastern Spain during 2018-2019. The results showed a decrease in pharmaceutical residues in seawater and sediments compared to a previous study in 2010-2011, but a notable accumulation in fish and molluscs. The flash flood event in 2019 led to increased concentrations of pharmaceutical residues in the lagoon. Therefore, the impacts of extreme climate events, such as floods, should be considered when assessing the risks of pharmaceutical contaminants in coastal ecosystems.
