The distribution of 17 pharmaceuticals between water and the solid phase (sediments and soils) was studied by utilizing solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Two extraction procedures for soils and sediments, prior to the SPE, one based on pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) with hot water and the other on methanol/water ultrasonic extraction, were compared. Absolute recoveries were 71.2-99.3% [relative standard deviation (RSD) < 21.4%)] for water, and the method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.3 to 10 ng L-1. Recoveries were 35.4-105.3% (RSDs < 19.1%) and 42.1-97.8% (RSDs < 14%) for soil and sediment samples, respectively, using PLE and 20.2-86.5% (RSDs < 25.1%) and 30.3-97.4% (RSDs < 19.1%) using ultrasonic extraction. Fifteen of the 17 pharmaceuticals were present in the L'Albufera water at concentrations up to 17 mu g L-1. Oxytetracycline and tetracycline were not detected. In sediments, only tetracycline, norfloxacin and diclofenac were not found. The other studied pharmaceuticals were present in the range from less than the method quantification limit (MQL) to 35.83 ng g(-1). Among the 17 target compounds, ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, trimethoprim, clofibric acid and diclofenac were not detected in soil samples. The average concentrations ranged from less than the MQL for ibuprofen to 34.91 ng g(-1) for tetracycline. These results indicate that pharmaceuticals could survive the wastewater treatment processes, which could lead to their dissemination in water environments.

Summary: The data obtained from wastewater analysis can provide rapid insights into illicit drug consumption at the community level. A national wastewater monitoring program was implemented in Spain to understand spatial differences and trends in drug use, with cannabis and cocaine being the most commonly consumed drugs in the country. Regional variations were observed, such as higher levels of methamphetamine in Barcelona and amphetamine in Bilbao, indicating different primary drugs in these metropolitan areas.

Summary: The study focused on the occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of 32 PPCPs in water, sediment, and soil in the Mediterranean coastal wetland Albufera Natural Park in Spain, as well as the influent and effluent of ten WWTPs. Results showed that certain PPCPs were detected at higher concentrations in the lake and channels, while only a few were found in the soil.

Postflood Monitoring in a Subtropical Estuary and Benchmarking with PFASs Allows Measurement of Chemical Persistence on the Scale of Months

Rodrigo Alvarez-Ruiz, Darryl W. Hawker, Jochen F. Mueller, Michael Gallen, Sarit Kaserzon, Yolanda Pico, Michael S. McLachlan

Summary: This study demonstrated that postflood monitoring campaigns can be used to quantify transformation half-lives of organic contaminants in estuarine environments. Water samples were collected in the upper Brisbane River estuary and analyzed for numerous substances, resulting in high quality time trend data for 41 substances. The mass balance model of the estuary stretch parametrized using PFASs provided valuable insights into dominant transformation processes and chemical inputs.

Soil and organic carbon redistribution in a recently burned Mediterranean hillslope affected by water erosion processes

Julian Campo, Erik L. H. Cammeraat, Eugenia Gimeno-Garcia, Vicente Andreu

Summary: This research investigated the post-fire soil erosion in a Mediterranean forest hillslope burned with high severity, and found that fire affects soil characteristics related to aggregation and SOC stabilization. The study provides insights into the impact of soil erosion on carbon distribution and highlights the importance of effective post-fire management to control and reduce erosion of aggregates containing high SOC content.

Microplastics Detected in Sediments and Rocks Substrate of Marine Areas with Ghost Nets

Dyana Vitale, Andrea Spinelli, Yolanda Pico

Summary: According to reports from UNEP and FAO, abandoned fishing nets in the oceans account for about 10% of the total plastic waste. These ghost nets can degrade over time and release microplastics, leading to environmental contamination. A study conducted in the Gulf of Cefalu, northern coast of Sicily, Italy, aims to understand the contamination level in the area by analyzing microplastics in sediment and rock substrate samples collected through scuba diving. The study identified the presence of polyamide, nylon, or polyethylene, possibly derived from the degradation of fishing nets, in the impacted areas.

Estimation of legal and illegal drugs consumption in Valencia City (Spain): 10 years of monitoring

Julian Campo, Dyana Vitale, Daniele Sadutto, Lucia Vera-Herrera, Yolanda Pico

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach is used to monitor the consumption of illicit drugs by analyzing the concentration of these drugs in municipal sewage. A study conducted in Valencia, Spain monitored the consumption of 16 drugs of abuse and metabolites over a period of one to two weeks between 2011 and 2020. The results showed that cannabis, tobacco, and cocaine were the most consumed drugs, with an increasing trend in cannabis and cocaine use since 2018. Furthermore, higher consumption of certain drugs was observed during weekends and local festivities. WBE proved to be an objective and useful methodology to study temporal drug consumption patterns.
