Summary: Imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) are increasingly being used, and there is evidence of their presence in the environment. Due to their potential for bio-concentration, it is necessary to monitor the presence of these compounds in organisms from potentially contaminated waters. This study developed a novel analytical procedure for the determination of imidazolium ILs in mussel tissues using a combination of extraction techniques and LC-MS/MS analysis.

Summary: Four amine-modified amphiphilic resins were synthesized and used as solid-phase extraction materials for enriching pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from water. The materials showed large specific surface area, high ion exchange capacity, and good hydrophilicity. A solid-phase extraction method coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry was developed, which exhibited good accuracy and sensitivity in determining PPCPs in water samples. This method has great potential for commercial application in trace PPCP extraction from environmental water samples.

Summary: A rapid, simple, and versatile analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 140 undesirable low-weight pesticides and mycotoxins in black tea. The method involved a combination of dual D-SPE with C-18 sorbent and anhydrous magnesium sulfate to eliminate interferences in the extract, maintaining the chromatographic column under ideal conditions for long-term satisfactory recoveries. Matrix-matched calibration curves were obtained for most target compounds with linear regression coefficients above 0.9900, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged within 0.5-10.0 μg/kg.

Summary: The behaviors of chlordecone (CLD) and chlordecol (CLDOH) during home cooking processes were assessed on a variety of animal products. Oven and microwave cooking decreased CLD concentrations compared to the pre-cooked state. Cooking time, sample weight, and matrix composition were found to be important factors in cooking efficiencies. Occasionally, low to moderate concentrations of CLDOH were detected in cooked matrices. These findings can contribute to risk assessment in this specific context.

Summary: According to reports from UNEP and FAO, abandoned fishing nets in the oceans account for about 10% of the total plastic waste. These ghost nets can degrade over time and release microplastics, leading to environmental contamination. A study conducted in the Gulf of Cefalu, northern coast of Sicily, Italy, aims to understand the contamination level in the area by analyzing microplastics in sediment and rock substrate samples collected through scuba diving. The study identified the presence of polyamide, nylon, or polyethylene, possibly derived from the degradation of fishing nets, in the impacted areas.

Summary: Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach is used to monitor the consumption of illicit drugs by analyzing the concentration of these drugs in municipal sewage. A study conducted in Valencia, Spain monitored the consumption of 16 drugs of abuse and metabolites over a period of one to two weeks between 2011 and 2020. The results showed that cannabis, tobacco, and cocaine were the most consumed drugs, with an increasing trend in cannabis and cocaine use since 2018. Furthermore, higher consumption of certain drugs was observed during weekends and local festivities. WBE proved to be an objective and useful methodology to study temporal drug consumption patterns.
