Summary: In this study, a femtosecond laser was used to texture Cu foils, successfully reducing the peeling and cracking phenomenon in Si anodes and mitigating volume expansion. The hierarchical structure reduced interfacial resistance and promoted electron transfer, leading to improved cycling stability and rate capability of the Si anode.

Summary: Laser surface alloying was employed to prepare a novel W-Cu/Cu composite with high W content on the surface but low W content for the whole composite, exhibiting a lower arc ablation rate than the commercial one. The study opens a door to overcome the trade-off of the ablation resistance and W consumption of the W-Cu electrodes.

Summary: Stable isotope and multi-element analytical techniques with chemometrics were used to trace the origin authenticity of rice in China market. A total of 115 batches of rice samples from 8 main producing areas of 7 Asian countries were analyzed. Supervised multivariate modeling methods like PLS-DA and LDA showed higher accuracy in identifying rice origins compared to ANOVA and unsupervised methods. δ2H, δ13C, Ba, Al, Mg, δ34S, Pb, and δ18O were identified as important variables for rice origin traceability. This analytical strategy can help ensure the authenticity of rice origin and combat mislabeling in rice trade.

Summary: This study aimed to authenticate 26 tea samples by combining inorganic chemical tracers (multi-elements and Sr isotopy) with volatile organic compound (VOCs) to discriminate the geographic origin, the varieties and transformation processes. By measuring Sr isotope ratio using MC-ICP-MS, 6 out of 11 regions were successfully discriminated. The combination with ICP-MS inorganic pattern allowed to discriminate 4 more regions with a significance level of 0.05. VOCs fingerprints obtained with SIFT-MS were not correlated with origin but with the cultivar and transformation processes. Green, oolong, and dark teas were clearly differentiated, with hexanal and hexanol contributing to the discrimination of oxidation levels.

Summary: A technique based on delta C-13 isotopic analysis of grape musts' major sugars by LC-IRMS was proposed to detect the fraudulent addition of exogenous glucose and fructose from C4 plants and characterize their geographical origins. The analysis of authentic samples from different regions in Italy revealed a significant correlation between the delta C-13 values of glucose and fructose and their geographical locations.

Summary: Isotope analysis of biogenic carbonates using LA-MC-ICP-MS can be affected by high calcium contents, leading to inaccurate correction of isotopic composition. This study presents a method combining internal normalization and sample standard bracketing to measure in situ Sr isotope ratios in biogenic carbonates, using the Chinese mitten crab as a case study. The results show that this method effectively corrects the LA-MC-ICP-MS measurements, making them statistically identical to MC-ICP-MS data.

Summary: The fsLASS-ICP-MS technique allows for simultaneous determination of sulfur isotope ratios and trace element chemistry in a wide selection of sulfides and sulfates, achieving high precision quantification of major and trace elements in sulfide minerals. While LASS shows lower sensitivity and higher limits of detection compared to direct use of LA-ICP-MS, the compromise is acceptable due to the additional information gained from obtaining isotopic and elemental compositions simultaneously.

Summary: This study successfully corrected for instrumental mass fractionation of Rb and Sr isotopes during LA-MC-ICPMS analysis, providing reliable Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios for high-Rb/Sr samples. The research revealed different behaviors of Rb and Sr isotopes during LA-MC-ICPMS and suggested the potential usefulness of the standard bracketing method for measuring Rb-Sr isotopic compositions of high-Rb/Sr materials.

Summary: A new calibration approach has been developed to obtain absolute isotope ratios of multi-isotopic elements by comparing the instrumental isotope fractionation of different mass spectrometers. The theory was tested on Cd and Pb isotope ratios, showing results compatible with certified ratios but with a slight bias that needs improvement. The method is universal and can be applied to all elements with three or more isotopes, providing information on the fractionation process itself.

Summary: A method for solidifying sulfide and sulfate nanoparticulate powder using epoxy resin was developed, allowing for in situ S isotopic analysis using LA-MC-ICP-MS. This method provides the opportunity to prepare bracketing standards and samples for a wide range of sulfur-bearing materials, particularly for samples with complex matrices. The precision of the S isotopic results obtained using LA-MC-ICP-MS was evaluated and found to be better than 0.47%. The in situ S isotope results were consistent with those obtained using SN-MC-ICP-MS. This method also offers new prospects for the preparation of homogenized reference materials from natural minerals.

Summary: This study attempted to classify and authenticate strawberries based on stable isotopes and elemental composition. Discriminant methods were successful in geographically classifying Slovenian and non-Slovenian strawberries, while class-modelling approaches were used for verification. The class models generated had high sensitivity and good specificity, with the more generalised model showing slightly lower specificity. A significant percentage of commercially available samples claiming Slovenian origin were actually from outside of Slovenia.

Summary: A dual-mode imaging strategy combining CLSM and LA-ICPMS was developed to visualize CTR1 migration and redistribution in HepG2 cells by using a fluorescent/elemental bifunctional tag. This strategy provides in-depth information for elucidating biological processes involving CTR1.

Summary: The bi-layered Zr/Cu composite cathode, prepared through laser cladding, shows a 39.0% lower arc ablation rate and improved arc discharge homogeneity compared to the mono-layered Zr/Cu cathode in an air atmosphere. The enhanced performance is attributed to the surface ZrO2 layer, which enhances the service life of the cathode by combining an ablation-resistant surface with a conductive matrix.

Summary: Laser ablation is an effective method for cleaning Cu-based alloys. A novel characterization method using O-18 isotopes was developed to assess the driving mechanisms of laser-surface interactions. The presence of re-oxidised compounds was detected, with the selectivity of the re-oxidation phenomenon depending on the laser conditions.

Summary: Fluids are crucial in geological and ore genetic processes. LA-ICPMS is an effective method for analyzing the composition of fluid inclusions in minerals. The use of NIST reference glasses as calibrating standards provides better accuracy and precision. Higher laser fluence improves sensitivity and is recommended for the analysis of natural fluid inclusions. The fluid inclusions from the Malanjkhand copper deposit indicate a magmatic origin with high concentrations of K, Rb, and Cs. Rating: 8 out of 10.
