Analytical method for the determination of trace levels of steroid hormones and corticosteroids in soil, based on PLE/SPE/LC-MS/MS

The aim of this study was to develop an efficient, sensitive and reliable analytical method for the determination of traces of steroid hormones (including oestrogen, androgens and progestagens) and corticosteroids in soil. A method of sample preparation involving pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) was developed for the determination of six steroids and five corticosteroids in soils, followed by analysis by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The conditions employed for PLE involved acetone/methanol (50:50) as the extracting solvent, a temperature of 80 A degrees C, two cycles and a static time of 5 min. The extraction was followed by a SPE clean-up based on a polymeric phase. With use of protocol, a residual matrix effect was, however, highlighted. The limit of detection in soil was 0.08-0.89 ng/g for steroids and 0.09-2.84 ng/g for corticosteroids.

Residues of currently used pesticides in soils and earthworms: A silent threat?

Summary: Research shows that the exposure to multiple classes of currently used pesticides poses a threat to earthworms in arable landscapes, with a high percentage of soils and earthworms contaminated at levels that could endanger these beneficial soil organisms. Chronic toxicity to earthworms was found in both treated winter cereals and untreated habitats, indicating potential negative impacts on biodiversity, recovery, and ecosystem functions. These results highlight the importance of regulating pesticides and promoting sustainable agriculture practices to address global environmental challenges.

Adsorption of Pharmaceuticals onto Smectite Clay Minerals: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Fluorescence excitation/emission matrices as a tool to monitor the removal of organic micropollutants from wastewater effluents by adsorption onto activated carbon

Summary: This study investigated the potential of fluorescence spectroscopy in monitoring the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) by activated carbon (AC) adsorption in industrial scale wastewater treatment. Different operational conditions and physico-chemical properties of OMPs affected the removal efficiency. Positive correlations were found between fluorescence indexes and OMP removal, with higher correlation coefficients compared to UV254, indicating the promising application of fluorescence spectroscopy.

The toxicokinetics of bisphenol A and its metabolites in fish elucidated by a PBTK model

Summary: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a concerning chemical due to its endocrine disrupting function, high production volume, and persistence in aquatic environment. A physiologically-based toxicokinetic (PBTK) model was modified to accurately simulate the fate of BPA in fish. The experiments showed that BPA metabolism in fish is not only limited to the liver, but plasma and gills may also play a role.

Ultrasound-assisted sample preparation for simultaneous extraction of anionic, cationic and non-ionic surfactants in sediment

Summary: Despite their wide use in various fields, the knowledge about surfactants in environmental solid matrices is generally limited. Aiming to develop an extraction method in sediments for the simultaneous analysis of anionic, cationic, and non-ionic surfactants, this study compared different extraction techniques, solvents, and additives. The optimized method, coupled with liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry, was validated and applied to real samples, allowing the detection of 18 out of 27 targeted surfactants.

Identification of Molecular Fragments in Equilibrium with Polysiloxane Ultrasmall Nanoparticles

Summary: Ultrasmall inorganic nanoparticles have gained significant attention in recent years for their beneficial biodistribution, pharmacokinetics, and theranostic properties. AGuIX nanoparticles made of polysiloxane and gadolinium chelates have been successfully translated for clinical use. In aqueous mediums, these nanoparticles are in dynamic equilibrium with polysiloxane fragments due to the hydrolysis of Si-O-Si bonds. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry has enabled the separation and identification of these fragments.
