Summary: Pharmaceuticals released from wastewater treatment plants are emerging contaminants that can have biological effects at low concentrations. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are unable to completely remove these contaminants, leading to their presence in sewage sludge. This study developed a method to detect pharmaceuticals in sewage sludge and hydrochar using a combination of extraction and chromatography techniques. The method was successful in detecting various pharmaceutical compounds in the samples tested.

Summary: A new method using LC-MS/MS for quantifying phenoxy herbicides in water samples was presented. The method utilized an automated SPE process with hydrophilic modified polystyrene and divinylbenzene cartridges at low pH, reducing organic solvent consumption and providing fully automated sample pre-concentration. Stable isotopically labelled analogues were used as internal standards to ensure accurate measurement. Analysis of thirty-two actual water samples showed a 40% detection rate of herbicides with concentrations comparable to other regions.

Novel electrophoresis-mass spectrometry methods have been developed to directly elucidate the structures of larger GAG chains with more biological importance, aiding in understanding the structure-activity relationship and quality control of GAG drugs.

Summary: To apply metabo-lipidomics in ophthalmological and systemic diseases, it is necessary to standardize the preanalytical and analytical steps in human tears. This study compared different methods for each step of the workflow and found that methanol/water extraction provided the best results for metabolomics, while Folch extraction was superior for lipidomics. The use of microcapillary glass tube for sampling was superior to Schirmer strip for metabolomics. A volume of 5 mu L provided satisfactory metabo-lipidomic coverage. These findings will contribute to improving the metabo-lipidomic workflow in human tears for the identification of new biomarkers.

Summary: A novel method for high-throughput and quantitative analysis of polysaccharides in food samples was developed, successfully quantifying nine polysaccharides with sufficient accuracy and reproducibility. Varied concentrations of polysaccharides were observed in different food samples, highlighting the potential implications for understanding the interactions of dietary polysaccharides, gut microbial community, and human health.

Summary: In this study, a specific, reliable, and suitable method for a fast and simultaneous analysis of 335 pesticides in ginseng was developed using liquid chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The method was validated for linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy, and precision, with limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) ranging from 0.1-5.8 μg/kg and 0.3-17.5 μg/kg, respectively. Analysis of 467 ginseng samples from 2016 to 2019 revealed pesticide residues in 304 samples, but most were below the standard. The hazard quotient (HQ) of ginseng for detected pesticides was less than 1, indicating low risk.

This method demonstrated good linearity and recovery, and could be applied for studying ceramide biology and disease diagnosis.

Summary: This study utilized reversed-phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and supercritical fluid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to determine the stereoisomers of chlorfenvinphos and dimethylvinphos in tobacco. A modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe technique using spherical carbon was employed for the extraction and purification of tobacco samples. Both methods were compared comprehensively in terms of methods validation parameters, showing excellent linearity and adequate recoveries for the targeted stereoisomers.

Summary: A novel in-syringe temperature-controlled liquid-liquid microextraction based on solidified floating ionic liquid (in-syringe TC-LLME-SFIL) combined with high performance liquid chromatography was developed for the simultaneous determination of herbicides in commercial vegetable protein drinks. The method utilized an ionic liquid as the extraction solvent, and after deproteinization and solid phase extraction column clean up, fine droplets were formed with heating and vortexing, followed by analysis using HPLC, achieving good linearities, low detection limits, and high spiked recoveries.
