An iron(III) doped zeolite modified glassy carbon electrode was constructed for the determination of pyridine-2-aldoxime methochloride. X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis were utilized to determine the optimum pH and chemical content for doping zeolite. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the modified electrode and study the kinetics of the acid treated and untreated modified electrode. Acid treatment of the modified electrode showed a better electrochemical behavior compared to the untreated iron( III) doped zeolite modified electrode. Square wave anodic stripping voltammetry was employed to investigate the working pH and preconcentration time. The analytical performance of the modified electrode was evaluated, and a linear anodic stripping response for pyridine-2-aldoxime methochloride in the concentration range of 0.5-100.0 mu M with a detection limit of 1.61 x 10(-7) M was obtained. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied for the determination of pyridine-2-aldoxime methochloride in a biological sample.

Polyaniline supported CdS/CeO2/Ag3PO4 nanocomposite: An A-B type tandem n-n heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abi M. Taddesse, Tigabu Bekele, Isabel Diaz, Abebaw Adgo

Summary: By synthesizing ternary composites with different ratios, the photocatalytic activity of CdS/CeO2/Ag3PO4 was found to be higher, with optimum operational parameters including pH 4, initial dye concentration of 10 ppm, and photocatalyst load of 0.15 g/L. Reactive oxygen species and hydroxyl radicals play major roles in the degradation of MeO dye.

Ti-PMO materials as selective catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclohexene and vernonia oil

Yaregal Awoke, Yonas Chebude, Isabel Diaz

Summary: The aim of this study is to obtain Ti-containing Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica (PMO) materials with catalytic activity in epoxidation reactions. The Ti-PMO materials possess ordered 2-dimensional hexagonal mesostructures, high surface areas, uniform pore sizes, large pore volumes, and tetrahedrally incorporated Ti(IV) species on the surface of the pore walls. The catalytic activities of these materials were tested in the epoxidation of cyclohexene and vernonia oil, showing good conversion rates and selectivity.

Surfactant-induced hierarchically porous MOF-based catalysts prepared under sustainable conditions and their ability to remove bisphenol A from aqueous solutions

M. Asuncion Molina, Nejat Redwan Habib, Isabel Diaz, Manuel Sanchez-Sanchez

Summary: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are widely used in various applications, including heterogeneous catalysis. However, the limited diffusion of reactants and products is a common issue. This study improves the performance of nanocrystalline MOFs by introducing surfactant-induced mesoporosity, enabling the efficient removal of bisphenol A from aqueous solution.

The effect of non-ionic surfactants on the sustainable synthesis of selected MOFs

Nejat Redwan Habib, Raquel Sainz, Abi M. Taddesse, Isabel Diaz

Summary: This study attempted to assist the sustainable synthesis of MOFs using non-ionic surfactants in aqueous solutions at room temperature. NH2-MIL-53(Al) and MIL-100(Fe) exhibited preferential crystal growth along a certain direction, while UiO-66 type (Zr-BDC and NH2-Zr-BDC) MOFs showed no significant difference. However, the surfactant templated UiO-66 type Zr-MOFs had larger particles compared to their parent MOFs.

GTM-3, an Extra-Large Pore Enantioselective Chiral Zeolitic Catalyst

Ramon de la Serna, David Nieto, Raquel Sainz, Beatriz Bernardo-Maestro, Alvaro Mayoral, Carlos Marquez-Alvarez, Joaquin Perez-Pariente, Luis Gomez-Hortiguela

Summary: Scientists reported the discovery of a new type of chiral zeolite material, GTM-3, with extra-large pores. This material demonstrated excellent enantioselectivity and the ability to catalyze reactions with bulky substrates. The researchers achieved unprecedented product enantiomeric excesses of up to 30% by catalyzing the epoxide aperture of transstilbene oxide with alcohols. This discovery opens new possibilities for the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of chiral pharmaceutical compounds using chiral zeolite materials.

Asymmetric catalysis within chiral zeolitic nanospaces: Chiral host-guest match in GTM-3 zeolite

Ramon de la Serna, Joaquin Perez-Pariente, Luis Gomez-Hortigueela

Summary: In this study, the asymmetric catalytic activity of GTM-3 chiral zeolite in the ring-opening reaction of trans-stilbene oxide using alcohols as nucleophiles was systematically explored. The results showed that a proper chiral host-guest size match is crucial for the chiral manifestation of the zeolite catalyst. Additionally, secondary alcohols with larger size exhibited higher enantioselectivity than their linear counterparts. Furthermore, variation of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of the epoxide and reaction temperature, could greatly influence the enantioselectivity and selectivity of the reaction.

Generation of mesoporosity in crystals of zeolite omega by post-synthesis treatments with surfactants

Alejandro Vidal de la Fuente, Amel Mekki, Bouhadjar Boukoussa, Marisol Grande-Casas, Enrique Sastre, Carlos Marquez-Alvarez, Manuel Sanchez-Sanchez, Joaquin Perez-Pariente

Summary: In this study, large-pore zeolite omega was treated with CTA to generate intracrystalline mesoporosity. The samples were characterized and it was found that dealumination and mild acid leaching are necessary for the formation of narrow-pore-diameter mesopores. The presence of mesopores enhances catalytic activity but does not improve selectivity.

Inversion of chirality in GTM-4 enantio-enriched zeolite driven by a minor change of the structure-directing agent

Ramon de la Serna, Itziar Arnaiz, Carlos Marquez-Alvarez, Joaquin Perez-Pariente, Luis Gomez-Hortiguela

Summary: The chirality of the -ITV zeolite framework undergoes a surprising inversion when the ethyl group of the enantiopure N,N-ethyl-methyl-pseudoephedrinium organic structure-directing agent is replaced by a benzyl or 2-methylbenzyl group. Interestingly, chiral zeolite materials obtained with these new benzyl-containing cations exhibit unprecedentedly high enantiomeric excesses up to 55%.

A combination of proton spin diffusion NMR and molecular simulations to probe supramolecular assemblies of organic molecules in nanoporous materials

Summary: In this study, high-resolution H-1 MAS NMR was used to distinguish between two aggregation states of (1R,2S)-ephedrine occluded within AFI-type microporous aluminophosphates. The investigation focused on the supramolecular assembly of ephedrine molecules and the distances between aromatic rings and their closest protons inside the zeolite channels. The combination of two-dimensional spin diffusion spectra, molecular simulations, and DFT calculations allowed for precise estimation of these distances.

Summary: Grafting aluminum onto SBA-15 improves Co dispersion and results in a more homogeneous distribution of metal species. However, the Al-grafted CoRu/Al-SBA-15 catalyst shows lower activity in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis compared to the all-silica CoRu/SBA-15 counterpart, but exhibits enhanced selectivity towards liquid hydrocarbons.
