Summary: Ag3PO4 nanoparticles were synthesized and exhibited excellent laccase-mimicking catalytic activity. Fumonisin B1 was found to inhibit the laccase-mimicking activity of Ag3PO4 nanoparticles. A novel colorimetric sensor for FB1 analysis in cereals was developed using the laccase-mimicking activity as a sensing signal, which allowed quantitative analysis of FB1 using a smartphone. The sensor showed a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.73 μg/L, below the maximum residue limits (MRLs) set by regulatory authorities.

Summary: A colorimetric detection method using starch-stabilized silver nanoparticles (starch-AgNPs) was developed for the selective quantitation of Cr(VI). The method relies on the observation of color change and reduction in UV-Vis signal to detect Cr(VI). The method offers high sensitivity and simplicity, making it suitable for speciation analysis of chromium in real water samples.

Summary: A highly sensitive and selective colorimetric assay using biogenic palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) was developed for the detection of uric acid. The instrument-free detection had a limit of detection of 0.05 μM and a limit of quantification of 1.11 μM. The assay showed a linear response in the concentration range of 0.05 to 1 μM with a linear regression correlation coefficient of 0.99841. This colorimetric detection provides a rapid, cost-effective, and easy-to-use platform for the clinical diagnosis of uric acid biomarkers.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics like ampicillin in developing and industrializing countries leads to the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria and adverse effects on health. To address this issue, a colorimetric assay using poly(vinyl alcohol)-capped silver nanoparticles was developed to detect ampicillin. The assay exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity, with a detection limit of 6.2 μM. This method provides a real-time and easy-to-use platform for detecting ampicillin in actual samples.

Summary: Development of an important and easy analytical method for screening silver ore samples is crucial for resource exploration and mining. A selective Ag+-promoted photosensitization colorimetric assay was developed, which allowed highly sensitive colorimetric detection of Ag+ with a visual limit of quantification as low as 0.2 ng/mL. The accuracy of the method was verified through analyzing certified reference material and real ore samples, showing good agreement with the results obtained by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ET-AAS).

Summary: Strontium-90, a frequently released radioactive product in nuclear reactor waste, poses serious health hazards due to its long half-life and the ability to accumulate in the food chain and bones. However, its identification is challenging due to the absence of characteristic energy rays. In this study, the authors developed a biosensor that uses a fluorogenic dye, thioflavin T, to detect Sr2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity. This work provides a technological solution to monitor radioactive strontium pollution and contributes to the sustainability of nuclear power.
