Sclerodermiform basal cell carcinomas vs. other histotypes: analysis of specific demographic, clinical and dermatoscopic features

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical and dermoscopic features of sclerodermiform basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in different body localizations, showing that nodular BCCs are more commonly found in the body macro-area while sclerodermiform BCCs tend to occur in the head/neck district, each with specific dermoscopic characteristics that can aid in clinical diagnosis.

Dermoscopic Findings in the Presurgical Evaluation of Basal Cell Carcinoma. A Prospective Study

Summary: Surgery is the primary treatment for basal cell carcinoma (BCC), but incomplete excisions are possible. This study assessed the accuracy of dermoscopy and clinical evaluation in detecting BCC borders and found that dermoscopy can improve identification of surgical margins for BCC excision, especially through observation of nonclassical dermoscopic criteria.

Summary: This study analyzed the quality indicators of postoperative complications in non-metastatic skin melanoma surgical treatment in Italy, finding rates of wound infection, dehiscence, and seroma within certain ranges. These findings contribute to setting recommended standards for melanoma centers, aiming to improve the quality of surgery offered to patients.

Tips for difficult to diagnose hypomelanotic melanomas on reflectance confocal microscopy

Maria Antonietta Pizzichetta, Vincenzo Canzonieri, Pietro Rubegni, Paola Corneli, Fabio Puglisi, Iris Zalaudek, Elisa Cinotti

Summary: Amelanotic/hypomelanotic melanoma (AHM) poses a challenge in clinical diagnosis. Dermoscopy helps improve AHM diagnosis by visualizing little pigment and vascular pattern. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) further enhances diagnostic accuracy of AHM, with major criteria including nonedged papillae and/or cytological atypia, and minor criteria like roundish pagetoid cells.

Find the Flame: Predictive Biomarkers for Immunotherapy in Melanoma

Mattia Garutti, Serena Bonin, Silvia Buriolla, Elisa Bertoli, Maria Antonietta Pizzichetta, Iris Zalaudek, Fabio Puglisi

Summary: Immunotherapy has revolutionized the treatment of melanoma, but the lack of clinically validated predictive biomarkers contributes to its unpredictable efficacy. Predictive biomarkers could aid in patient stratification, drug selection, and treatment adjustment, yet their difficulty in obtaining reflects the complexity of tumor biology. Biomarkers play a crucial role in guiding clinicians through the decision-making process for checkpoint inhibition in melanoma.

Summary: The cases of two patients with advanced melanoma receiving different treatments demonstrate potential immunological responses against melanoma, with vitiligo-like depigmentation and halo nevi development indicating a favorable prognosis.

Summary: This study aims to identify dermoscopic features for differential diagnosis between atypical basal cell carcinoma and melanoma, and to assess the clinical impact of these findings. The results suggest that atypical vascular pattern can be considered a shared feature of both types of skin cancer, and the proposed score improves diagnostic accuracy and confidence.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the predictive value of dermoscopic and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) features for AHLM/LMM. The results showed that certain specific features were significantly independent diagnostic factors for early diagnosis of AHLM/LMM.

A risk-scoring model for the differential diagnosis of lentigo maligna and other atypical pigmented facial lesions of the face: The facial iDScore

Summary: Due to the progressive ageing of the population, the incidence of facial lentigo maligna (LM) is increasing. This study aims to develop a risk-scoring classifier-based algorithm to estimate the probability of atypical pigmented facial lesions (aPFLs) being malignant, and compare its diagnostic accuracy with that of dermatologists. The results show that the facial iDScore model is more accurate in diagnosis and can reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies.
