Amino acids such as leucine and its metabolite alpha-ketoisocaproate (KIC), are returning to be the focus of studies, mainly because of their anti-catabolic properties, through inhibition of muscle proteolysis and enhancement of protein synthesis. It is clear that these effects may counteract catabolic conditions, as well as enhance skeletal muscle mass and strength in athletes. Moreover, beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) has been shown to produce an important effect in reducing muscle damage induced by mechanical stimuli of skeletal muscle. This review aims to describe the general scientific evidence of KIC and HMB supplementation clinical relevance, as well as their effects (e.g., increases in skeletal muscle mass and/or strength), associated with resistance training or other sports. Moreover, the possible mechanisms of cell signaling regulation leading to increases and/or sparing (during catabolic conditions) of skeletal muscle mass are discussed in detail based on the recent literature.

The Effects of Physical Fitness on Postactivation Potentiation in Professional Soccer Athletes

Mauro A. Guerra, Leonardo C. Caldas, Helder L. Souza, Jason Tallis, Michael J. Duncan, Lucas Guimaraes-Ferreira

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between physical fitness scores and postactivation potentiation (PAP). The results showed that athletes with higher fitness levels demonstrated a more significant response to PAP induction, and plyometrics exercises combined with sled towing sprints as a conditioning activity improved CMJ performance in athletes.

Feeding Pattern, Circadian Rhythm, and Immune Function: What do we know about?

Thiago Barros Estanislau, Karsten Kruger, Jose Cesar Rosa-Neto, Camila S. Padilha, Daniela Caetano Goncalves, Luciele Guerra Minuzzi, Fabio Santos Lira

Summary: Feeding pattern is closely related to health status, and timed eating can promote molecular synchronization and a healthy response. Disorganized feeding patterns may lead to non-synchronization of clock genes and chronic diseases. Time-restricted eating is an effective strategy for promoting health and treating chronic diseases.

Viral load is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and altered monocyte phenotype in acute severe SARS-CoV-2 infection

Pedro R. T. Romao, Paula C. Teixeira, Lucas Schipper, Igor da Silva, Paulo Santana Filho, Luiz Carlos Rodrigues Junior, Alessandra Peres, Simone Goncalves da Fonseca, Marta Chagas Monteiro, Fabio S. Lira, Marco Andrey Cipriani Frade, Juliana Comerlato, Carolina Comerlato, Fernando Hayashi Sant'Anna, Marina Bessel, Celina Monteiro Abreu, Eliana M. Wendland, Gilson P. Dorneles

Summary: Monocytes play a crucial role in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2, and high viral load can contribute to the severity of COVID-19. This study found that COVID-19 patients have altered monocyte phenotype and mitochondrial function, including changes in monocyte subsets, molecule expression, mitochondrial polarization, and reactive oxygen species generation. These findings provide insights into the pathological mechanisms involving viral load, monocyte activation, and mitochondrial dysfunction in severe COVID-19.

Short-Term High-Intensity Circuit Training Does Not Modify Resting Heart Rate Variability in Adults during the COVID-19 Confinement

Patricia C. Garcia-Suarez, Jorge A. Aburto-Corona, Ivan Renteria, Luis M. Gomez-Miranda, Jose Moncada-Jimenez, Fabio Santos Lira, Barbara Moura Antunes, Alberto Jimenez-Maldonado

Summary: This study investigated the impact of short-term high-intensity circuit training on resting heart rate variability in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that 36 sessions of HICT did not induce cardio-vagal adaptations in adults. The exercise protocol did not modify the resting HRV in adults under social isolation elicited by the pandemic.

Creatine supplementation combined with blood flow restriction training enhances muscle thickness and performance: a randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blind study

Rayssa Sousa-Silva, Jason M. Cholewa, Kassiana de Araujo Pessoa, Zhi Xia, Jakob D. Lauver, Fabricio E. Rossi, Nelo Eidy Zanchi

Summary: This study compared the effects of an 8-week creatine (CR) or placebo (PL) supplementation on muscle strength, thickness, endurance, and body composition with blood flow restriction (BFR) vs. traditional resistance training (TRAD). The results showed that creatine supplementation increased muscle thickness in both TRAD and BFR groups compared to the placebo, without a significant difference between treatments. Additionally, TRAD training improved maximum strength compared with BFR, and repetitions to failure were higher in the BFR-CR group at 30% 1RM. Overall, the study suggests that creatine supplementation can enhance muscle adaptation following BFR training.

Environmental Enrichment in Cancer as a Possible Tool to Combat Tumor Development: A Systematic Review

Matheus Santos de Sousa Fernandes, Tiago Ramos Lacerda, Debora Eduarda da Silva Fidelis, Gabriela Carvalho Jurema Santos, Tayrine Ordonio Filgueira, Raphael Fabricio de Souza, Claudia Jacques Lagranha, Fabio S. Lira, Angela Castoldi, Fabricio Oliveira Souto

Summary: This systematic review evaluates the impact of environmental enrichment (EE) on oncological factors in experimental studies on various cancer models. The findings demonstrate that different EE protocols effectively reduce tumor growth and development in terms of angiogenesis, volume, weight, and the number of mice with tumors. Additionally, EE enhances the rate of tumor inhibition. These findings emphasize the importance of EE as a valuable tool in cancer management.
