Summary: The establishment and activation of kala-azar sentinel site surveillance in thirteen health facilities of Bihar from 2011 to 2014 detected a rise in PKDL and co-infections. The results showed significant improvement in utilization of laboratory services and case management, with most patients being managed by the sentinel sites. The system may provide a model for improving elimination interventions and program management.

Summary: Arsenic poisoning through groundwater is a major global catastrophe, with significant impact on public health. A study conducted in a village in Bihar, India, revealed high levels of arsenic exposure leading to various health issues and cancer cases among the population. The installation of an arsenic filter plant in the village aims to improve the health situation in the future.

Summary: This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) toward VL infection among VL-infected and HIV/VL co-infected patients in Bihar. The findings showed similar deficits in KAP scores among both groups. HIV/VL participants with a personal or family history of VL had better awareness and preventive practices. There was a correlation between knowledge, attitude, and practice. It is recommended to strengthen KAP among VL and HIV/VL co-infected patients to prevent reinfection-related complications.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of sensitive surveillance for early detection and response to visceral leishmaniasis outbreaks. High risk groups identified include individuals aged 10 and above, as well as residents of SC/ST tolas. Efforts should focus on enhancing surveillance in these disadvantaged communities to better control transmission.

Summary: This study reports on 52 suspected cases of cutaneous and mucosal leishmaniasis in a tertiary care setting in southern India from 2008 to 2018. Of the 12 confirmed cases, seven had mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, two had cutaneous leishmaniasis, and three had post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. The emerging trend of atypical MCL caused by L. donovani variants highlights the importance of a high index of suspicion combined with PCR-based diagnostics for accurate diagnosis of different manifestations of leishmaniasis.

Summary: After scaling down control efforts for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) on the Indian subcontinent, population-based surveys of antibody or antigenemia prevalence can be used to predict the potential recurrence of new VL cases. Biomarker prevalence, especially in adults, was found to be highly correlated with the occurrence of new VL cases within 1-2 years after scaling down. Rapid point-of-care diagnostic tools assessing seroprevalence or antigenemia in the general population could be crucial for sustainable VL control.

Summary: The study systematically reviewed co-infection of malaria and visceral leishmaniasis, finding heterogeneous prevalence rates in different geographical areas. Age and anemia at admission were associated with co-infection status. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine the impact of malaria co-infection on the severity of visceral leishmaniasis.

Summary: India has made significant progress in controlling visceral leishmaniasis by shortening the time untreated patients remain infectious. Research shows that the risk of additional cases in villages increases with higher cumulative incidence, and the time-to-next-case decreases with increasing case-load.

Summary: India is making progress towards eliminating visceral leishmaniasis as a public health problem, with timely case detection playing a crucial role in reducing infectivity and controlling outbreaks. Active case detection strategies have been shown to significantly reduce time to diagnosis, lower transmission risk, and ensure higher capture rates of confirmed cases.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to kala-azar in Bangladesh, in order to provide recommendations for the national elimination program. A cross-sectional study was conducted in two endemic subdistricts, and data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The findings showed that while most participants had heard of kala-azar, there were gaps in their understanding of its transmission and prevention methods. Additionally, the study highlighted the importance of strengthening community engagement and healthcare facilities in the national program.

Summary: Anaemia in adolescents is associated with physical disorders, growth, and mental retardation, with higher prevalence among adolescent girls. This study fills a gap in anaemia intervention programs for adolescents by analyzing data from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, India. The findings suggest that anaemia is more prevalent among rural adolescents, those with lower education levels, late adolescence, and those with no exposure to mass media. Effective public health policies targeting rural adolescents and disseminating information through mass media are needed to address anaemia in this population.
