Summary: The study estimated the impact of implementing dengue vaccine screening and vaccination intervention in Puerto Rico, finding that the vaccine could reduce severe dengue hospitalizations to a certain extent, but may also increase hospitalization risk for vaccinated individuals without prior exposure to dengue virus, with a cost-effectiveness ratio of 382 USD.

Summary: The study highlights the impact of runoff from land on nearshore ecosystems, especially coral reefs, which is influenced by sediment supply and coastal processes. Different sources of fine sediment from various watersheds affect coral reefs differently, and changes in landscape after major storms can also affect sediment transport. Successful reduction of land-based pressures on nearshore ecosystems will require cross-jurisdictional strategies to address these complex issues.

Summary: Due to concerns regarding limited testing, an automated surveillance system called PREPCOVI was created to evaluate COVID-19 incidence and trends in Puerto Rico. Text message invitations were sent to random phone numbers, resulting in a 26.8% response rate. The study found that PREPCOVI total COVID-19 cases were higher than cases reported by the health department, but time trends were similar.

Summary: Limited seroprevalence estimates of dengue virus (DENV) are available for Puerto Rico, and it is crucial for informing the use and cost-effectiveness of DENV vaccines. The Communities Organized to Prevent Arboviruses (COPA) cohort study was initiated in 2018 in Ponce, Puerto Rico to assess arboviral disease risk and evaluate interventions. Seroprevalence of DENV and Zika virus (ZIKV) was assessed among children aged 1 to 16 years, with DENV seroprevalence exceeding the threshold for cost-effective vaccination.

Summary: Understanding the burden and risk factors of dengue virus infection in Puerto Rico is crucial for preventing dengue in the local, traveler, and military populations. Through the study of serum samples, we found that individuals born or residing in dengue-endemic areas before military service in Puerto Rico had a higher likelihood of DENV exposure, while those from non-endemic regions had a lower likelihood.

Summary: Dengue vaccine intention in Puerto Rico increased after the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, likely due to increased awareness of vaccine importance. However, concerns over side effects and vaccine skepticism remain barriers to vaccine acceptance.

Summary: Using the CSTE guidelines, a study characterized COVID-19-associated deaths in Puerto Rico during March-July 2020, identifying 225 deaths (119 confirmed, 106 probable). The study found that the median age of decedents was 73, with males accounting for 62.2% of deaths, and common contributing conditions included influenza and pneumonia, sepsis, and respiratory failure. Excess mortality calculations suggested a possible 413 more COVID-19-associated deaths than originally reported, emphasizing the importance of including probable deaths and monitoring all-cause excess mortality for better estimation of COVID-19 deaths.

Summary: The devastating tsunami in northwest Puerto Rico on 11 October 1918 has been used as an example of earthquake-induced landslide tsunami hazard. Three pieces of evidence, including the discovery of a large submarine landslide scar, reported breaks of submarine cable, and the fit of tsunami models, pointed to a landslide as the origin of the tsunami. However, newly processed seafloor imagery shows that the landslide scar is at least several hundred years old, indicating an alternative tsunami source from a two-segment normal-fault rupture along the eastern wall of Mona rift. Close-up observations and physical samples are essential to complement remote sensing data in natural hazard studies.

Summary: This study examined community perceptions on a large-scale project in Ponce, Puerto Rico aimed at reducing Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and arboviral disease transmission. The study identified challenges such as inconsistencies in geographic boundaries and low number of children affecting disease incidence measurement. Other challenges included population attrition, lack of community leaders and communication channels post-Hurricane Maria, and lack of trust due to criminal activities. Solutions involved identifying emerging leaders and implementing community meetings. The study provided valuable insights to improve project implementation.

Summary: The first locally acquired case of Mpox in the Chinese mainland was reported on May 31, 2023, after other countries. This study examined the early clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the earliest cases in Beijing and analyzed the sequence and transmission patterns of the Mpox virus. Most cases were in men who have sex with men (MSM), and a significant proportion also tested positive for HIV. Skin lesions, fever, and swollen lymph nodes were common symptoms. The virus strains belonged to the B.1.3 branch of the West African lineage and showed genetic diversity.

Summary: Implementing a 'pre-vaccination screening' strategy in Puerto Rico can significantly reduce the number of dengue cases and disability-adjusted life years. Regardless of the testing strategy, it is cost saving from a societal perspective.

Summary: IPS observations provide valuable information about solar wind conditions and density irregularities, but interpreting complex structures can be challenging due to the changing physical properties of plasma with distance from the Sun. Numerical simulations can help compare CME structure and physical changes, shedding light on the complexity of IPS observations.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility and outcomes of using GOS traps and dengue NS1 antigen tests for indoor and outdoor dengue/Aedes surveillance in a community in Selangor, Malaysia. The study found that this surveillance method was well received by the community and detected dengue-positive mosquitoes. Additionally, it demonstrated a decrease in dengue cases in the study area from 2018 to 2019.

Summary: This study describes the epidemiology of dengue virus infections in Belize diagnosed through AFI surveillance in 2020. Results showed that all four DENV serotypes were detected, with two cases of DENV serotype 4, the first report of this serotype in Belize since 2004. The majority of DENV cases were diagnosed in the Belize District during the dry season. Understanding the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of DENV is crucial for public health interventions to mitigate transmission.

Summary: This study examined the sociodemographic, healthcare, and sexual behavioral characteristics of provider-initiated HIV testing in a high-risk population in Puerto Rico. The results showed a low prevalence of receiving HIV test referral among heterosexual individuals engaged in high-risk behaviors, emphasizing the need for healthcare providers to follow guidelines and promote access to HIV tests and preventive measures.
