Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), also known as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is common in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and can lead to advanced liver fibrosis. Patients with T2D have an increased risk of liver-related complications and mortality. Screening for NAFLD/MASLD and advanced liver fibrosis is recommended in T2D patients. While there are no approved drugs for NAFLD/MASLD, certain antidiabetic drugs have shown positive effects on liver health. Diabetologists have the opportunity to actively treat NAFLD/MASLD and potentially change its natural course.

Based on common metabolic risk factors, their association poses an additional risk of hepatic and cardiovascular adverse outcomes. Appropriate terminology is important for the diagnosis and treatment of NAFLD. Strategies for addressing both diseases include lifestyle interventions, pharmacological options, and surgical procedures.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool in pathology for objective and accurate diagnoses. This review outlines the histopathological characteristics of NAFLD/NASH and discusses previous research on AI-based pathological diagnosis.

Summary: The study aimed to characterize the genotype and subgenotypes of HBV circulating in Saudi Arabia, the presence of clinically relevant mutations possibly associated with resistance to antivirals or immune escape phenomena, and the possible impact of mutations in the structural characteristics of HBV polymerase. Plasma samples from 12 Saudi Arabian HBV-infected patients were analyzed using an in-house PCR method and direct sequencing. Saudi patients were infected with mainly subgenotype D1 and showed multiple mutations in the RT and S genes, which may have implications for the natural and therapeutic history of HBV infection.
