An aluminide coating typically FeAl/Al2O3 composite coating is one of the most promising candidates for the tritium permeation barrier (TPB) in the tritium breeding blanket and auxiliary tritium handling system in fusion reactors. The preparation process of the aluminide coating generally involves two steps of aluminization and oxidation. Interdiffusion occurs between Al atoms and Fe atoms on the substrate surface to form (Fe, Al) solid solution or Fe-Al intermetallic transition layer in the aluminization step. In the oxidation process, the aluminide layer surface is selectively oxidized to form an Al2O3 film. The aluminide coating can be prepared by the technique of physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), hot-dipping aluminization (HDA), electro-chemical deposition (ECD), packing cementation (PC), plasma sputtering (PS) and sol-gel etc. CVD, HDA and PC technique have potentials to be selected as the candidate engineering preparation technique of the aluminide TPB coating in fusion reactors. Meanwhile, ECD technique is rather appealing for the preparation of the aluminide TPB coating because of its easy process controlling, stable coat performance and availability of coating complex-geometry structure. However, compared with the predictions based on the material bulk properties, the aluminide TPB coating often exhibits lower efficiency than anticipated. One important reason is that alloying elements from the coating substrate materials and aluminum sources exert a significant influence on the composition, microstructure, and performance of the aluminide coatings, that is, an alloying effect exists in the aluminide coatings. Based on the source of alloying elements, the alloying effect can be classified as the substrate effect and doping effect. In view of the influence efficacy, the effect of alloying elements on the aluminide coating can also be identified as three types of beneficial effect, adverse effect, and nearly no effect, which can be converted to each other under certain conditions. On the other hand, the alloying effect in aluminide coatings depends on the element species, concentration, temperature, coating preparation technique, medium environment, and other factors. Therefore, in the practical preparation and application of the aluminide TPB coatings, the alloying effect must be comprehensively analyzed, so as to obtain the best coating performance under certain conditions. Contrasting Responses of Soil Nematode Trophic Groups to Long-Term Nitrogen Addition

Qingqiu Zhou, Xiaoli Wang, Ying Wu, Zhe Chen, Debao Li, Yuanhu Shao, Jianping Wu

Summary: Long-term nitrogen deposition can change the abundance and community composition of soil nematodes, affecting the soil food web and biogeochemical cycling. In Cunninghamia lanceolata forest, nitrogen addition increased the abundance of bacterial-feeding nematodes but reduced the abundance of plant-feeding nematodes. Furthermore, nitrogen addition indirectly affected the abundances of bacterial, fungal, and plant-feeding nematodes via changes in soil nutrients, soil water content, and pH.

Novel branched-chain sulfonate surfactants based on ? -olefins from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis via reaction-separation-utilization integrated process

Xu Li, Jiaqi Li, Xiaohong Wang, Lijun Yang, Hong Xu, Jinxiang Dong

Summary: Despite progress in purifying C5-C9 linear alpha-olefins from Fischer-Tropsch synthesis products, the separation of olefins and paraffins with the same carbon number hampers their industrial development. This study proposes a process that uses zirconocene/methylalumoxane catalyst for selective dimerization of linear alpha-olefins, followed by distillation and catalytic conversion into branched-chain sulfonate surfactants. The resulting surfactants outperform commercially used linear alkylbenzene sulfonate in terms of surfactant properties and detergency performance.

New STAT3 inhibitor through biotransformation of celastrol by Streptomyces olivaceus CICC 23628

Yaqian Feng, Peipei Chen, Chuyue Huang, Hailan Chen, Ruolan Fan, Lu Wang, Shaohua Xu, Wen Xu, Zhimin Fan, Wei Xu

Summary: Celastrol was transformed by Streptomyces olivaceus CICC 23628, resulting in the isolation of two new friedelanes derivatives (CEL-1 and CEL-2) as metabolites. Their structures were elucidated through NMR and HR-MS analysis. In vitro studies demonstrated that CEL-2 could induce apoptosis and block the cell cycle in HCT-116 cells. Western blotting analysis showed that CEL-2 inhibited STAT3 phosphorylation and downstream gene expression. Moreover, SPR analysis confirmed the direct binding of CEL-2 with STAT3 protein. These findings suggest that CEL-2 may have potential as an anti-colorectal cancer agent by inhibiting STAT3 and inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Summary: In this study, we developed a reliable method to accurately determine the copy number of STRC based on standard short-read genome sequencing data, which has clinical significance in the screening and diagnosis of genetic hearing loss. Our population analysis revealed that 5.22% of the general population has copy number changes in STRC, almost half of which are clinically significant, including heterozygous and homozygous deletions of STRC. Additionally, we provided population-based evidence of pseudogene-mediated gene conversions between STRC and STRCP1.

The Oxidation and Immobilization of As(III) by Colloidal Ferric Hydroxide in the Concomitant Pollution of Oxytetracycline

Yunping Tong, Xiaolei Wang, Xinghao Wang, Zhaoyue Sun, Guodong Fang, Juan Gao

Summary: The concomitant pollution of arsenic and antibiotics has been commonly observed in recent environments, and their behavior may differ from when they exist individually. Colloidal ferric hydroxide (CFH) is found ubiquitously in various environments and in this study, it was shown to facilitate the degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC) and the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). Under oxygen-rich conditions, reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as (OH)-O• and O2•- were generated through the reactions between dissolved oxygen (DO) and Fe(II). It was found that (OH)-O• played a dominant role in the oxidation of As(III). Furthermore, the oxidation of As(III) to As(V) resulted in the formation of ferric arsenate, which significantly reduced the risks of As(III) in the environment. Similar transformations were also observed with other iron oxides and different antibiotics. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of organic pollutants in combined contamination.

Effect of konjac glucomannan on aggregation patterns and structure of wheat gluten with different strengths

Xia Zhang, Yu Tian, Jinjin Xing, Qi Wang, Ying Liang, Jinshui Wang

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Konjac glucomannan (KGM) on the aggregation patterns and structural properties of weak, middle, and strong gluten. The results revealed that 10% KGM substitution resulted in decreased aggregation energy for middle and strong gluten, but increased for weak gluten. Additionally, 10% KGM enhanced the aggregation of glutenin macropolymer (GMP) in weak gluten, but suppressed it in middle and strong gluten. Furthermore, 10% KGM induced a transition from alpha-helix to beta-sheet in weak gluten, while causing more random-coil structures in middle and strong gluten. The network of weak gluten became more continuous with 10% KGM, whereas it was severely disrupted in middle and strong gluten.
