Summary: This study aimed to explore the synergy of Epimedii Folium and Ligustri Lucidi Fructus (ELL) with dexamethasone (Dex) in the proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy of airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs). The results of the study suggest that ELL combined with Dex may regulate the proliferation of ASMCs by promoting apoptosis and autophagy and be a potential medicine for the treatment of asthma.

Summary: ASM cell dysfunction is a key factor in obstructive pulmonary diseases, particularly asthma, leading to uncontrollable clinical phenotypes. External stimuli and soluble mediators can induce ASM cell phenotype transition. Interventions targeting ASM hypertrophy are being explored to reduce muscle mass and improve asthma symptoms.

Summary: Airway remodeling in asthma involves the hyperproliferation of airway smooth muscle (ASM) cells. The inhibition of diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) reduces the conversion of diacylglycerol (DAG) into phosphatidic acid (PA) and inhibits ASM cell proliferation. These findings suggest that DGK may serve as a potential drug target for mitigating airway remodeling in asthma.

Summary: This study reveals that mitophagy is actively involved in hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (PH) by regulating pulmonary artery smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation. FUNDC1-mediated mitophagy is upregulated during hypoxic PH and activates the ROS-HIF1α pathway, ultimately leading to pulmonary vascular remodeling and the development of PH.

Summary: This study found that Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) participates in the regulation of smooth muscle apoptosis in the airway, affecting airway smooth muscle thickening and remodeling through the phosphorylation of Caspase-9. This discovery reveals an important new target for asthma treatment.

Summary: This study revealed the up-regulation of circ_CSNK1E in asthma samples and PDGF-BB induced ASMCs. Inhibition of circRNA_CSNK1E suppressed proliferation and migration of ASMCs. CircRNA_CSNK1E acted as a sponge for miR-34a-5p, which in turn inhibited the proliferation and migration of ASMCs. VAMP2 was identified as a direct target of miR-34a-5p. Inhibition of circRNA_CSNK1E suppressed proliferation and migration of PDGF-BB induced ASMCs through the miR-34a-5p/VAMP2 axis.

Summary: Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that varies in its presentation and severity. Airway smooth muscle is the major contributor to airway narrowing and asthma symptoms. Various factors can contribute to the dysfunction of airway smooth muscle. Methodological limitations in studying the airways have hindered our understanding of asthma mechanisms.

Summary: Eosinophilic inflammation is a key feature of asthma, with distinct types of eosinophils influencing airway smooth muscle cell proliferation and viability through integrins. In asthma patients, exposure to specific allergens can enhance the pro-proliferative properties of inflammatory eosinophils, while resident eosinophils have a stronger effect on stimulating smooth muscle cell proliferation and viability.

Summary: This study investigates the thickening process of the airway smooth muscle (ASM) layer from fetal life to childhood, and reveals the underlying mechanisms of hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. The results show that ASM thickness more than doubles from late gestation to the first year of life due to ASM hypertrophy, and then grows proportionally to airway size through ASM hyperplasia until childhood. The composition of the ASM layer remains constant across age groups due to a proportional change in ECM.

Summary: Asthma is characterized by enhanced airway contractility and remodeling, in which airway smooth muscle (ASM) plays a key role and is modulated by inflammation. Understanding the contribution of ASM to these features is crucial for the development of novel asthma therapies.

Summary: Increased airway smooth muscle mass in asthmatic patients may contribute to disease pathology, with evidence suggesting the involvement of airway epithelium in this remodeling process. Co-culture experiments reveal that the proliferative phenotype of airway smooth muscle cells induced by epithelial cells is not driven by EGFR signaling, but may instead depend on miR210 targeting of the tumor suppressor Mnt. This study provides insights into the mechanisms underlying airway remodeling in asthma.

Summary: This study characterized concentrations of eight phthalates and 12 PAHs in floor dust from the bedrooms of 79 children. Some phthalates were associated with product and material use, while some PAHs were associated with household characteristics. No significant increases in risk of atopy was found based on phthalate or PAH dust concentrations.
