Summary: TL1A regulates mucus production in the lungs by inducing IL13 expression, as well as promoting airway inflammation and fibrosis. Inhibition of IL13 signaling can reverse TL1A-induced mucus secretion while maintaining airway inflammation and fibrosis. TL1A presents a promising therapeutic target for severe asthma in humans.

Summary: Gestational arsenic exposure can affect developmental outcomes. This study explored the effects of arsenic exposure in different periods on susceptibility to allergic asthma. The results showed that juvenile exposure to arsenic increased the susceptibility to allergic asthma by aggravating goblet cell hyperplasia and airway mucus secretion, especially when exposed after weaning.

Summary: GRHL1 is upregulated in non-small cell lung cancer and correlated with poor patient survival. Overexpression of GRHL1 promotes cell proliferation while knocking down GRHL1 affects the expression of cell cycle-related genes. The study also reveals the potential role of GRHL1 as a drug target in NSCLC.

Summary: The gain-of-function minor allele of the MUC5B promoter is strongly associated with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and overexpression of MUC5B promotes endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, apoptosis, and fibrotic lung injury.

Summary: The study showed that PM2.5 exposure exacerbated pulmonary inflammation and mucus secretion in an asthma model. Transcriptome analysis identified NQO1 as a hub gene associated with neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) caused by oxidative stress. Targeting NQO1 may be a novel therapeutic option for PM2.5-induced mucus hyper-secretion in asthma patients.

Summary: Severe pneumonia caused by bacteria poses a significant clinical challenge due to the obstruction of mucus in the lower respiratory tract. To overcome this barrier, researchers have developed a responsive nano-agent capable of penetrating mucus and releasing drugs in response to infection. The nano-agent showed efficient antibacterial properties and biocompatibility, and effectively inhibited lung infection in an animal model of pneumonia.

Summary: This study found that mucus plugs can serve as a persistent phenotype of asthma, and both subjects and bronchopulmonary segments are susceptible to mucus plugs. The relationship between changes in mucus plug scores and changes in airflow over time supports the causal role of mucus plugs in mechanisms of airflow obstruction in asthma.

Summary: The impact of surface coating on the interaction between lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) and the mucus barrier is studied using a patient-derived 3D cell culture model. The results demonstrate significant differences in residence time in mucus and mucociliary clearance for UCNPs with different coatings.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of a feed supplement composed of nutraceutical herbs in the treatment of lower airway inflammation in racehorses. The results showed that the supplement effectively controlled lower airway inflammation, as evidenced by reduced clinical signs and mucus accumulation. It may serve as a potential adjunctive treatment for mild-moderate equine asthma (MEA).

Summary: This study reveals the important role of HNF4G in cisplatin resistance of lung adenocarcinoma. High expression of HNF4G is positively correlated with cisplatin resistance and poor prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma patients. Mechanistically, HNF4G promotes cisplatin resistance by binding to the MAPK6 promoter region and activating the MAPK6/Akt pathway.
