Summary: This study estimated the socio-economic costs of uncomplicated malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and explored health care-seeking behaviors. The findings showed that uncomplicated malaria is associated with high economic costs and time lost during pre-hospital care, particularly for economically active patients and those without health insurance coverage. Efforts to reduce the cost-of-illness should focus on addressing social disparities and improving malaria control measures in the country.

Summary: This study examined the experience of sexual violence, help-seeking behaviors, and mental health outcomes among 18-34-year-old South Asian Americans in the New York State region. The results showed that many survivors did not report the assaults or receive services. Participants who were older, sexual minorities, had a family member as the perpetrator, had lower disclosure stigma, and experienced depression were more likely to seek help. Sexual minority participants had higher odds of depression, while those with higher sexual assault disclosure stigma had lower odds of depression.

Summary: The study found that in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, most women did not receive integral maternal health services, but those with higher maternal educational attainment, good HIV-related knowledge, living in urban regions, and wealthier households were more likely to be partial or full service-users. Women exposed to mass media at least once a week were also more likely to be full service-users. The majority of participants living in Kasai and nearby provinces were infrequent service-users, highlighting a need for interventions to improve maternal health-seeking behavior in the region.

Summary: Young women in sub-Saharan Africa are at a higher risk for malaria during pregnancy. Seeking early antenatal care (ANC) increases the likelihood of receiving recommended malaria treatment. A study in Malawi and the DRC found that young mothers with higher ANC ideation were more likely to intend to attend ANC early in their next pregnancy. Interventions to increase ANC-related ideation among young women could improve malaria and birth outcomes.

Summary: Cobalt is essential for strategic technologies, but concerns arise from the concentration of its production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This analysis explores the causes of historic disruptions to DRC cobalt mine and refinery production. The results suggest that the main factors were damaged transportation routes, underinvestment in mining assets, and the disintegration of the DRC economy. However, it is expected that DRC will continue to dominate cobalt mine production, given sustained development of infrastructure and good governance.

Summary: Sexual violence, both conflict-related and non-conflict-related, is prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This study found that female survivors of sexual assault in DRC were more likely to be minors, while male survivors were more likely to present to the hospital earlier. Differences in HIV prophylaxis and prophylactic antibiotics for male and female survivors highlight the need for further research to ensure equitable care for all survivors.

Summary: Conflict and mass displacement in South Sudan have led to the breakdown of community and family structures, increasing the vulnerability of women and girls to gender-based violence. The study found that unintended pregnancy and induced abortion have seemingly increased during the current conflict, with discussions in the community becoming less condemnatory towards abortion due to changes in people's situations caused by war. This study highlights the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding abortion and investing in women and girls to improve gender equity in South Sudan.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, government policies to contain the virus have exacerbated gender-based inequalities and increased the risk of gender-based violence. A rapid assessment in four African countries revealed that government missteps and restrictive measures disrupted the availability of comprehensive gender-based violence services, including rape management, legal support, and psychosocial services. Governments should prioritize and strengthen gender-based violence prevention and response services, following international guidelines and investing in community-based solutions and digital tools.
